yea, what's with that swastika?
jazzs3quence
jazzs3quence on Jul 07 '05
the swastica was used by Jains and Buddhists in India for luck looong before the germans corrupted it.

brainydictionary.com also says:

Max MuLler distinguished from the swastika, with arms prolonged to the right, the suavastika, with arms prolonged to the left, but this distinction is not commonly recognized. Other names for the swastika are fylfot and gammadion.

lose the swastika. too many peoplpe would misunderstand it and it doesnt really add anything to the design. awesome otherwise though

while it is true that budhist use the swastica, and is infact a very universal symble, it subtracts from what makes this image so cool because of its social implications.

I LOVE THIS, i think it is so beautiful and well done, although i know why there's a "swastika" too many people would beat me up if i wore this. so, i say loose it and you've got a four/five

its an incredible design... i like how it all comes together too. im not feelin the swastika obviously because of the nazis. i know it had a different history with the buddhists but that isn't what will come to people's minds first. i'd definitely buy this on the dark blue minus the swastika. keep up the good work! :) $5

Perfectly done, well... other than what's already been pointed out. Even if the swastika WAS a symbol of luck before the whole Nazi thing, I'd say atleast 90% of people don't know it. I didn't know it.

So therefore I wouldn't want to be caught wearing this shirt (atleast with the symbol). But it sort of sucks, cuz it would be silly to resubmit the entire design only without the symbol. Anyways the rest is beyond awesome.

I would point out that is an Omote Manji the arms point in the opposite direction of the Ura Manji that was perverted to teh swastica by teh Nazis. As much as I'm a fan of Asian culture and taking back the Manji, I think that the symbol will be misread too often and generally you won't get a chance to explain that you aren't a Nazi. There are plenty of other symbols that you could put on, or even no symbol. Great design though.

it is perfect to me the way it is...

however i agree that the general public would not understand the swastica. swasticas have been used by many cultures even the native americans used them. it's a shame the nazis had to bastardize such a powerful symbol 555555555555555555555+++++++

FOR the record, Sawastikas make two S's. Just to be safe, I would take away the Swastika. Even though it isn't the same, I don't think we live in a society capable of realizing the difference before they throw a couple punches. And, there are still people out there (and lots of them) who still believe that stem cells only come from a fetus.

Swastika must stay. If Nazis used a cross instead, should crosses be censored? Ridiculous. Time to take back the symbol.

leave the swastika. all you peole rant on and on about ignorance and being politically correct and individualistic and as soon as something that could appear controversial appears, you cower and run with your tail between your legs.

id buy it. and id wear it. and when someone says, "you nazi fucker!" ill say, "you arrogant, ignorant, prick! before you judge me, look at yourself and how eager you are to tell me how bad i am! take note of the direction of the arms, look up the meaning and then shoot yourself in the face for being an ass. And next time, before you judge something you know nothing about, remember, THAT is how the nazis came about. dick"

that's what i would say.

anyway, $5

Captain Toasty on Jul 09 '05
Simple fact is people don't know the difference between a nazi swastika and this symbol, and a lot of people would just think less of you without bothering to ask you about it. Can you fault people for such common ignorance? If the symbol is so important to you, make a shirt that has something like (swastika symbol) =/= (suavastica symbol). Make that distinction a focal point instead of a detail. That's my two cents.

I'd pass up on the shirt because it wouldn't represent my beliefs (even without the suavastica), but it's a well done design. 4.

eritain on Jul 09 '05
'shoot yourself in the face for being an ass' -- Yes, danegerous, that is *exactly* the way to build a tolerant, progressive society. Certainly better than refraining from using a symbol that the vast majority of people will read as hate speech.

I don't understand why people are making a big deal about the symbol. The real problem here is that BUDDAH IS NOT HOLDING THE GUITAR. It's just floating there. Am I the only one bothered by this?

I honestly don't care what you do with the symbol, but PLEASE make buddah hold the guitar.

I'll give this a 5 just because I want to counteract all the people that gave this a shitty score b/c of the "swastika." Please make him hold the guitar, please.

WHY DIDN'T THREDLESS JUDGES BAN THIS ONE? 6 million people murdered in the holocaust by the hands of the Nazies wearing this horrible symbol. to every sane human being the swastika represents the monstrous, atrocious beyond belief violent inhuman acts of the Nazies. it shouldn't be used as a T. shirt logo!!! it shouldn't be used at all!!! next time please show some sensitivity.

Funkmaster45 on Jul 14 '05
Ok, let's put this discussion to an end.

THIS: http://www.markdery.com/archives/images/SWASTIKA.gif

is a Nazi swastika. The Buddhist symbol(as illustrated in this brilliant design) can face either way, but it is always upright. The Nazi symbol is always slanted and always facing one way.

Buddhism is in no way affiliated with Nazism. Do you really think A Nazi would burn himself alive in protest of violence in Vietnam? I'm thinking no.

Not only that, but censoring a symbol, no matter the connotation behind it, is restricting freedom of speech and expression, and that's just not right. If anything, printing this shirt will end the ignorance surrounding the symbols because more people will ask about em, and that's cool, right?

By the way...Dotan, you forgot about the undesirables (Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, handicapped people, non-whites, etc) who were killed in the Holocaust. I don't know the exact numbers, but I've heard about 6 million of them were killed in total, so that makes 12 million at least. Make sure ya know your stuff and understand before you get angry. :)

Yes Funkmaster, even though you're 100% right. That doesn't mean that 90% of the people who see me wearing the shirt aren't going to think otherwise, glare at me, maybe even kick my ass. Cuz even though you may know all about the origins of the symbol, most people don't, and it just happened to become one of the most negative and hated symbols in the history of mankind. You really can't see why it could possibly be a problem?

Because people are stupid. I seriously had a similar concept for a design, but you guys did it better than I would have.

Unfortunately I'm certain that Threadless will ask you to remove the manji if it is printed. Alas too many of the fans of this site these days learn all their history from MTV and VH1 and would not know any better. We are Americans after all, and our school system sucks.
