About my design

by TheEngineDriver
Picture of my ex-girlfriend I took one night. We were just goofing around. And, I just decided to mess around with the pic, and I kinda just started drawing. I was also kinda pissed off with how people whore good music and make it popular.

I hate it myself. The pink could be brighter, and its a typical white/black/pink combo. Not too creative colorwise I suppose. Heh, here I am critiquing my own crap. lol.

Cool design, but you allready know what needs to change so I won't bother with that.

But I don't quite understand what you mean by "how people whore good music and make it popular." I don't mind music being popular, what I do hat e is when music is fake. Like the NOFX album "The War On Errorism". I could have done that pile of crap with my eyes closed. "dur.. lots a peoples hate bush, lets like make music about it! KA-CHING!" Then theres Green Day with there political song. With it came this new green day, great for kids under the age of 15 who don't know shit about music. "Lets get all punk/gothed out, cause thats what all the cool kids are doing!"

*sigh*

I used to like green day, but if they keep that up im going to have to stop listing to them.

Then theres that Tommy Lee song that came out. Where hes pissing and moning about his life! "BooHoo, I hate being me, I have so much money, and I bang one of the hottest chicks ever! BooHoo, people take pictures of me! waaaaa"

blah! I tell you! BLAH!
TheEngineDriver
TheEngineDriver on Jul 10 '05
Yes, I agree with you about Green Day, they are definitely not the same at all. I feel like so much music these days is so fake for one, and take Death Cab for Cutie for instance. Great group I think, but everybody and their mother listens to DCFC now because it was on the OC (any prep's wt dream of a TV show if you ask me). Now all these kids are suddenly die-hard DCFC fans and they don't even like the music. They're just into it becuase its on some popular show... Good music whored.

Hmm, are you sure they only like it because it was on the OC? I dont know if I can speek for the brainwashed teenyboping MTV part of this nation, but if don't like something as far as music goes, I tend to not wan't to listin to it.

Maybe im just not cool enough to understand how good music works now adays.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Does anyone have any ideas for a better slogan? I'm having a brain fart at the moment. I'll see what I can come up with though. I really liked the one I have right now, but whenever I look at it all I see is VH1. Blah!

@Paradox, its sorta the same thing. If its on MTV people will listen to it because MTV says so. They don't like it because of the message, they don't like the sound, they like it because someone tells them to like it. That's my problem. Yeah, I love the groups, and I love that they are getting attention, but I don't think all "types" of attention are necessarily good. I dunno, its just always bothered me. The whole "poser" thing.

Is it worse to have good music whored than have bad music shoved down your throat everywhere you go? I'm not sure, but I'm glad that the vapid flock that is pop culture seems to be moving on from gangster rap to songs you can actually hum.

There's a similar phenomenon occuring with videogames. After Halo and GTA exposed every frat house in the nation to videogaming, now everyone and their grandma thinks they can act like they're an olskoo gamer. Atari? Yeah, I think my dad played that, I'll wear a shirt with that on it.

This shirt design isn't my style, but it's well done. I would suggest "fear of pop" as a slogan but Ben Folds already used that. Maybe you could reword it.

The font I used was actually called Agnostic, and I got it from http://www.dafont.com :D Thank you for your comments. I have some ideas for a slogan, please let me know what you all think:

"Redeem Thine Music" - dunno bout that one.

"Revive the Music"

"Rescue the Music"

"Purge the Music"

Eh, I dunno. Just gimme some feedback please. You all have been really helpful.

I hear what you're saying, but then I see that you've used design fads that have been "whored" out to the point of obsenity. Forgive me if I find that hypocritical.
megggan
megggan on Jul 15 '05
shirt's okay, i agree with a lot of what's already been said- it looks a little like you just slapped on some photoshop filters, even if you didn't, though i guess that's not always a bad thing. nice idea, i just wouldn't wear it.

on another note. the decemberists? que bueno.
TheEngineDriver
TheEngineDriver on Jul 15 '05
Eh, I didn't see anyone accusing me of just using photoshop filters... except for you. However, that is not accurate. I refuse to use photoshop filters, I do all my own work. Whatever though, its your opinion. :)

@MrDomino, using a certain color combination makes me a hypocrite? Alright, I'll take that into consideration next time I make a shirt. Only use colors that clash right? Okay, I think I got it.
TheEngineDriver
TheEngineDriver on Jul 15 '05
Sorry MrDomino its just hard to take what you're saying as anything but offensive being as I didn't have anything in mind, I just started drawing, and you accuse me of using a whored idea and that I'm a hypocrite. People usually don't take stuff like that too well and I'm no exception, but I figure there's always someone like you in the group, so whatever.

MrDomino
   MrDomino on Jul 17 '05
I never said anything about the color. I'm talking about grunge brushes, distressed type and so on. This is the kind of design you'd see on MTV, or on a shirt of one of the bands you are opposed to. Certainly that type of design is fine, it has its place. However the message of the design is a reaction to the "cookie-cutter" method of music fabrication, which is conflicts rather sharply with the way you've presented the idea, using popular, largely commercial, design conventions. I find that hypocritical.
Louman
Louman on Jul 17 '05
"Viva la musica" "For the music" I dunno a few ideas for a new slogan. I like the design though.
TheEngineDriver
TheEngineDriver on Jul 17 '05
Oh well, didn't get a high enough average, its not getting printed. This was and is my only design I will be submitting here.

@MrDomino, I have limited design with clothing, and this was something I recently started. Having someone tear me a new asshole has made this experience just wonderful. Considering every style has been done time and time again, it gets kinda hard to find a unique style. Your style certainly isn't unique. I find you hypocritical. How's that grab ya? So because for one year MTV whored a "grunge" style in the past means that its off limits for future designs?! WTF are you on? What happens when they've whored every style out there? What then? I'm not seeing a correlation here between the people I disagree with, and the design of my shirt. To tag something that I made freely, and spontaneously as "whored" is just rotten. What more can you expect from a rotten person expcept for rotten words though I suppose.

   MrDomino on Jul 21 '05
haha, well I'm sorry that you think I "tore [you] a new asshole" because if that's enough to offend your tender sensibilities, then you're in for a surprise when real critics offer their insight to your work.

Now I'm not really sure where I led you to believe several of the things you have typed. It's not a question of being unique all the time. I never said that. It's a question of taking what you design in context. Finding a concept that is central to what the design represents and then tying every element, to the smallest detail, to that idea. If you want to make an advertisement that says conceptually "Harley-Davidson Motorcycles kick ass" you would most likely not use fluffy bunnies or porcelain dolls. The ideas don't logically coincide (unless you are clever enough to spin it as such).

Here you have that problem. As you stated, the impetus behind this design is: " I was also kinda pissed off with how people whore good music and make it popular." I don't know how other people read that, but I percieved that you don't like the commercialization of music. Yet, at the same time, you send that message using very similar styles of commercialized music: distressed angel wings, amorphous grunge shapes, and a stock dirty typeface. You could very easily drop out the text that's there and replace it with any number of new pop band names and the design would fit like a glove. Again, as I said, those elements would not be so terrible if perhaps you used them where they applied, like the Used contest. What I see here is a Nike advertisement protesting sweatshops. In other words, hypocrisy.

I don't see it as hypocrisy. There could be several reasons for grunge or that style. Maybe I'm trying to portray how the popular kids beat down the good music but there are some who fight for good music?

I don't really care anymore. People will like it, people will hate it. But I will take your criticism into thought next time.
