About my design

by Kevin Barrack
It seems to me that pulp movies are about action, suspense, and street-smart grittiness, and not just blood and violence. This is what I tried to capture in my design.

Your design needs to be brought down just a few spaces

that's kinda funny. but i agree, too high.

little_hobbit_feet on May 30 '05
I'm marking it a 1 for two reasons:

1) the brown looks poopy on the navy.

2) while I agree that not all Pulp movies are gritty bloody sex/violence, your interpretation looks too big-budget summer blockbuster.

Outside the IFC competition and on a different shirt colour, it would get a higher score.

Thanks for the good feedback, LHF.

I like the guy flying in the background near the electric pole. heh.

i like it a lot. even the brown on the blue ... there are a lot of red shirts in this competition and i just think it's not a good color for wearing.

this design is lacking a little in the blood category for IFC for sure ... but i like hte design a lot outside the competition

I like it! I think it is my favorite from the IFC competition so far. Very refreshing from all of the other blood saturated submissions. I understand that blood might capture the essence of IFC, but you did an outstanding job interpreting it into a way that is appropriate for the t-shirt medium.

Great design. Some submissions are very great like this one... I don't understand why others are printed even if the quality is horrible, or badly executed... It's strange..

good for a 3 but it does look like the image sits too high on the shirt, i'm not sure if thats because you had to make space for the design itself outside (if you know what i mean)

if the design was positioned lower a good 4.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. As for position on the shirt, I didn't pay too close attention to it since I figured that threadless would adjust (in the event it got printed).

I'm considering submitting another version of this design which uses only a couple of the illustrations, instead of all of them, which might hopefully address the issue of it feeling like it is a Hollywood picture instead of indie.

i think even with less going on, it is too slick to be pulp. it's really well done, but i don't think it works for the contest. i like the colors of the design, but think it would work a lot better on a different color shirt. also, i agree that it sits too high.

lower and different colour scheme, would look good on black, with grey buildings, and keep the white the same. then i might buy it

I think my main problem with it is that I keep trying to make sense of all the white silhouettes as thought they were all happening at the same time. This means that the flying jeep looks really out of place, as well as the guy-on-motor-bike/guy-with-gun?-and-cool-kung-fu-moves... I just can't see anyone kicking a motorbike, I guess. Or a jeep randomly flying through the air with no obvious way to get there and nobody down on the ground seeming at all concerned that it's about to crash into them. MAYBE I'm just interpreting this all too literally, but I think that what I'm getting at is that there's too much going on, and there's not always a good enough use of perspective to separate one thing from another. Does that make sense?

All that said, it's still a really impressive design. Four, but no buy.

it does look pretty blockbustery in its current incarnation...but i really like the central running figure and the palm tree which looks really L.A....i think you might be able to simplify into something that looks more pulp/ifc-y using those elements and perhaps a few others...oh and i love the forklift...it should star on its own shirt!

If you would bring down the design just a little, Id buy it in a heartbeat.

Putting IFC in every submission is a little boring. Are you designing for Threadless or are you trying to abuse threadless to publicise yourself? Come on.....!

Olliebopsa: I'm not sure I understand your comment. I designed this submission, but this is the only IFC one I have submitted. Threadless is having a contest with the Independent Film Channel right now. It's not my logo.

Thanks to everyone for comments! I agree with everyone who said it sits too high on the shirt. I've noticed that the brown color looks very dark on some monitors, but it is intended to be more of a sandy yellowish brown, instead of a reddish dark brown.
