About my design
by Ian Leino
I love the retro future look, and couldn't resist submitting another design. This time, it's inspired by the cartoons and animated commercials of the 50's, specifically the work of Ray Patin Studios.

Will there be a colony on the moon someday? Of course! But the commute's going to be a killer.

The design is as seen on the shirt. The elements on the right are enlarged for detail, not placement. For a larger version of the design, please see my profile.

I wish there was some color, either the shirt or the design. All that gray is too much...gray.

More color is a good idea. Some red or yellow.

since it's the future i think you should make it pop a little more. with the colors you have, its making it look kinda drab and the futre should be fun and colorful

I have to agree about the lack of color; making the car, cellphone, and sign post red might be the perfect touch. As an image, I think the black and white against blue looks cool, but it's not compelling as a tshirt design.

Thanks for the input so far. It seems that maybe I should have explained this a little better to start with.

It's supposed to be monotone. Both the historial context (black and white cartoons and advertising), and the concept (the inevitable downside of technological advancement) dictate a monochromatic palatte.

It needs to feel slightly cold, drab and a little lonely to emphasize the tedium of the incredibly long commute that this poor sap has. Sure, he gets to tell everyone that he works on the moon, but at what price?

Its very nice Ian! I remeber the advertising era you touch on. The shapes and design styles were cool and your rendition is "Spot on"!
but I am sure all your subtle efforts and fine design are lost on many who may rate your work.
I really enjoy Threadless, but it seems teen angst, suicide and revenge are the types of subject matter that captures folks attention, throw in some falling bombs, burning airplanes, cross hairs and a bullseye, and don't forget bloody tears falling from a Panda with a exposed anytomical heart and you'll get High ratings!

Actually, if you wanted to add some color, but still maintain the monotone feel, you could try some mint green or a light blue.
That would stay with your chromatic ideas, while adding just a small touch of retro color, since those colors were very big at the time.
Just a thought.

Yooou got it, TomMac! Anything to pander to the silly little Goths or pimply computer nerds. Or maybe, they are the ones sending in all those submissions...
Fabulour design, Ian-I can see a lot of thought went into it.

oh yeah i put 5 and buy.. I like the color scheme but do agree with Janus42 that if you want to add color and keep the feel the mint green or a light blue could ad a great touch.. maybe at the end if this dosnt get printed (I really hope it does cause I want it) then try a resubmit with color.

No explaining needed--all of that came across (for me, at least) in the design. 5$, easily.

I love the colors; I think it conveys how everyday life will be just as boring and tedious in the future as it is now. Fivenbuy!
