KEMMLER

About my design

by KEMMLER
I accidentally double-submitted this by hitting enter before I was done typing in the description... Anyway, in case the correct submission doesn't get through for some reason, here is the description:

This design was inspired by the patch "Impossible Dream 5" from the great VST synth ZynaddsubFX, which you should check out, especially since it's FREE. It's also a standalone so even non VST-host using people can see the amazingness. Check a 500kb mp3 sample that I very quickly made here:

http://depot.northwestern.edu/abk772/impossibledreamdemo.mp3?uniq=ihsi2l

and here is a shaded view of the 3d objects in this design:

http://depot.northwestern.edu/abk772/impossibledream3d.gif?uniq=ihsi2g

this whole design is just supposed to represent how my creative process is informed by sound and music, specifically this sound, but it applies to whatever. I hope you like it!

^^ thats a lot of explination for a shitty ass design. Everything looks like it has depth except the keyboard. It looks like a god damn junk yard. Sorry, but ZERO.

i like the clouds with the moon in the background.. work on that and scrap the fore ground...

sorry might sounda bit harsh but the foregrouns it hard to look at. Also if you decide to keep the forground, work on the keboard a bit, the perspective of all the other objects are cool but the keyboard just looks like it was done in ms paint :S... sorry no offence meant.

however it does look quite good on the blue shirt.

But it feels very overpowering on all of the others.

Giving a predicted score for everyone's work is reallly annoying Alex. Especially since you always give such low scores. I'm not going to predict a score for yours, but needless to say it's not going to get printed. I wish you'd stop predicting, that's all.

I do like that you showed your process with the 3D-obstacles. But it does look a little busy though, my advice would be to block out those 'cloudy' things and use some color or textures to make the collection of things in there more clear. I hope it makes sense what I just said.

Too much grey.

There's a great deal too much indistinguishable chaos between the accordian on the left and the face on the right.

I think the basic design of this needs improvement. I would go back to the point where I have the accordian connected to the head through the twisting black lines, and then start thinking about what I want to put in between them. Right now I see a jumble of gray and think black lines, which doesn't help me understand the connection between you and music. The clouds might work for this design if they don't intrude so much into the head at the right. You will have to think about how to downplay your objects in the middle so a viewer can begin to understand that music facilitates the creative process. If instead of all the hard black lines defining gray shapes, think of how much more understandable the design would be if there were easily distinguishable art objects (pencil, paintbrush, or even cliched "idea" symbols) interlaced through the connecting black lines.

After you figure out what to put in between there, work on color. Currently, the black and gray look the best on the light blue shirt. However, I'm basing that on the thumbnail, where the hot pink and bright blue aren't able to be seen well. You need to incorporate color into this better. Those bright colors aren't really bringing attention to anything of importance. In fact, the stars would probably look nicer in black, next to the black moon.

thanks for the advice, but it's a synth keyboard, not accordian. Also, I am wondering if anyone has listened to the sound file yet, because I think you'd understand the chaotic bits if you did.

I listened to the sound clip and I still think the design is too chaotic.

My first impression was that I really liked this design. I'm a big fan of all types of art, but especially graffiti. My gripes here are a) color and b)style switching.

Unlike most of the people who've commented, I really like the foreground. I agree, though, that it needs some more colors apart from grey. I would add tones of grey, to give it the impression of depth. I'd also lose the blue and violet, and replace those with different colors. Those colors, combined with the 'inspired' face to the right makes this almost feel like a poster for some stage play...and the moon, too. I'd go back and re-do these elements in a graf style and change up the colors.

Lovin the complexity though. And I agree, some people simply haven't developed a sense of humor, and this is sad. (They didn't even get it when you were talking about yourself... tsk tsk.)

It needs room to breath...maybe some thin, delicate chaos squirting from a black/white/grey synth...and the two cords coming out of the back could be so intricately woven around more complex geometric shapes... the face broken down to just outline with an off register screened color behind it would help it trail off into clarity, and the moon should just be somewhere else... I'm sorry so many people hate on you man... it must be the moon.

Based on the fact that you don't appear to like criticism around your work, perhaps you should stop with the shitty and derogatory comments that you've made around other people's designs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it say that if you're going to critcize, to be constructive and respectful about it. Stop being a twat and concentrate on getting your own stuff right.

I 2nd Princess McGoo. Dude after the comments you passed about my 1st attempt at a t-shirt design I was kinda expecting to be blown away and amazed by all your work. Hmmmmmmmmm a slight breeze, but not blown away.

I think some of your other stuff is far better than this.
