Tired of saving princesses who can't keep themselves un-kidnapped for more than a week at a time, two videogaming legends decided they've had enough of performing pixellated altruistic acts that never seemed to make their lands any safer. So they formed a pact and hijacked one of big bad Bowser's airships, and began traversing every cloudy corner of their respective universes in search and plunder of all the Rupees and gold coins they could acquire. Apparently, they're trying to save up enough 1UP bling to live for eternity, as well as equip Peach and Zelda's castles with the best security systems money can buy.

If you're wondering what became of that OTHER plumbing brother who sports green-tinted overalls, he's chained up below deck, making sure the ship's heating ducts and septic pipes are operating smoothly. A pissed-off elfin creature with serious swordplay skills will best a lanky second-banana who's taken one too many turtle shells to the skull any day of the week.

That is correct actually, regarding more of the influence being Mario Bros.-related since it takes place on an SMB3 airship turned pirate ship. Alvaro and I tried to fit in more LOZ references but ultimately we tried to strike a balance between fun additions and visual clumsiness.
