It's nice, I'd like it without the television or whatever.

the tv is the whole point.

boots&hearts on Mar 08 '05
....what is the point of the tv exactly? i'd kindof feel like a teletubby with a tv on my stomach, maybe because its so low down.. i really like the hands though, creepy

serves me right for submitting conceptual art to threadless.
vlcmston
vlcmston on Mar 08 '05
if you're going to cry about people not liking the stuff that you submit, don't submit it. just because you say it's 'conceptual' doesn't mean someone else is going to say it 'sucks'.
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 08 '05
you're one to talk. who's crying about people not liking it? everyones asking what the tv means...and i was expecting people to understand it...but i guess i should start submitting bleeding hearts and people slitting their wrists..because i guess thats more understandable than a REAL concept.

it's an amazing shrt with amazing art i'd definatly buy this

Miz on Mar 08 '05
Get off your high horse. People don't understand it because it makes very little sense. Hands sticking out of a TV playing Cat's Cradle is quite simply symbolic gibberish. I don't like the bleeding hearts either, but being entirely incomprehensible is just as bad.
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 08 '05
just because it doesnt have an obvious, blatant meaning doesnt make it gibberish. art should be structured, which is what i executed...that doesn't put me on a "high horse". don't look for reasons to start arguements.

I think it means something like 'the media controls us' or something. I think it's pretty cool.

When I look at this all I see "TV's hands are tangled lying on it's side" , which to me is the opposite of control. If you are implying that the media is ineffectual then I would suggest having the string tangled around the television too; this contrasts with the obvious symbolism for control using string, the marionette.
Sporadic Patches of Mullet
art should mean what the viewer decides it means, you can't make a concrete point to the masses with a mediochre illustration.
anyways I think the tv should be the same style as the arms, right now it looks like an 8 year old was playing in Illustrator
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 09 '05
there are different types of art...not all art is to be decided by the onlooker, if they find an alternate meaning than thats fine even if it wasnt the artist's intention, but some art is meant to have a concrete definition.

p.s. the hands remind me of derek hess's artwork, which is definetely a good thing.

if you expect everyone to interpret something the same way then your living in a world filled with uninteresting mindless slobs...

huh, interesting.
onshallowsea
onshallowsea on Mar 09 '05
Which kind of art is this? If there is a concrete definition behind it, me and strimackus must be using different dictionaries. Is your message served by the way the images convey it, if two completely different interpretations are possible?

chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 09 '05
i dont "expect" anyone to have any interpretation, but my INTENTION was for one meaning, like i said if anyone else sees it differently then thats fine, kudos to them...i think my comments wrong, sporadic.

i really dig the hands, but the tv doesn't quite look like a tv to me, more like a midget ipod on its side or something...
mr keith
mr keith on Mar 09 '05
this is very cool, but I'm not sure if I like the arms coming out sideways and the strings do look alot like a cats cradle if are trying to say that media infulences us maybe they should look more like puppet strings? and if they were to come up from the top and were to have some strings hanging down? maybe that would be abit be abit cheesy tho!
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 09 '05
its supposed to look like cats cradle, so im kind of glad its noticeable haha i just didnt want to get too compelx with it to make it look messy...my intention was basically that we sit and let the media influence us/attract us and we've neglected outside activities..i geuss kind of like we sit on our asses too much and let the tv entertain us when we can be doing better things.

i understand it and i like it. i don't get why people have to spend their time arguing about someone else's artwork. i think its great, and i would buy it. good job :]
ravenword
ravenword on Mar 09 '05
reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut.

see the cat? see the cradle?

in Cat's Cradle he uses it as sort of an analogy for lots of false expectations and let-downs. television is certainly full of those.

nice art.
shoshtaev
shoshtaev on Mar 10 '05
look man, threadless or not is a different point the TV looks wrong to me from the compositional standpoint and the hands with the string look cool, its all i say, id buy it in a sec with just hands design spun.

chimbleysweep on Mar 10 '05
ravenword: now that you mention it, it does remind me of vonnegut too. he's my favorite author, so maybe there was some kind of subconscious motivation? haha

my only critisism is that the tv is so smooth and the arms arent at all
other than that its pretty cool

anywyaz. I like this ALOT. It would look good with or without the tv. Without tho, it gives the idea of soul strings. Just a thought.
chimbleysweep

why did you comment on all my submissions telling me to grow up?

oh thats right. i didnt like your tshirt so you felt the need to come and rag on mine.

thats cute. hypocrite.

just because vonnegut has a book called cat's cradle does not mean it connects to your illustration of a cat's cradle, vonnegut is way too good for your subconscience, sorry. And as for you being a conceptual artist most of your designs are poorly irreverent.
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 10 '05
if youre going to be nosey, read the comments. i didnt say it connected to the book, someone else did.

i also didn't say i was a conceptual artist, i said this PIECE was conceptual.

like i said, if youre going to get into business that doesnt concern you, at least read it fully.
W.A.I.F.
W.A.I.F. on Mar 10 '05
an open forum is hardly private business, and when some says there work is conceptual, it not only makes them sound pretentious, but it basically is stating that you have a concept. Not vague iconist bullshit. i completly agree that t.v. is a life wasting, other reality, that is just as much a form of escapism as heroin. point blank your design does not relate your message well enough for it to be enjoyed as a shirt by the general public. it proably shouldn't be on threadless. i think your idea is great but try re-working it, be less defensive, and take an art class, because i hav e been in critiques that would proably make you cry.
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 10 '05
okay. i didnt say it was private. stop putting words down that i didnt say. having a conceptual piece has nothing to do with pretention, when i did it, i have a CONCEPT in mind hence- CONCEPTUAL. it is meant to express a message/concept. stop looking for arguements.

this website is to rate designs for t shirts

make designs people want to pay money for

capitalims disguised as art

it is not an art class, and you can make whatever you want, and people can say what ever they want
burntfly
burntfly on Mar 10 '05
the point is, this isn't an art class, and there is no aim to have this approved by a panel of instructors. listen, i know the type. you took a few art classes, perhaps graduated. it doesn't mean shit, and it sure as hell doesn't mean that everyone has to take one to have their "concepts" approved by the general public. Art is art in itself, regardless of intention. I would have thought that was the first thing you would have learned in your art classes.
chimbleysweep
chimbleysweep on Mar 10 '05
shouldnt it be up to the people to decide what they want to pay for? isnt that the whole point of rating?....

I like it very nicely drawn, maybe a bit smaller, but the placement is on target!
redberger
redberger on Mar 11 '05
the way the hands were drawn is way different from the approach taken in illustrating the tube and it doesnt look like a tv BTW. i dont get this whole "art" argument. this aint a show and tell session in art school. if you cant take our opinions about your shirt design then maybe this isnt the right venue for "ARTISTS" like you.
coribs
coribs on Mar 11 '05
yeah....i don't like the tv...but the sketchy style of the hands is awesome...it seems like enough people have covered this where i don't have to give more details...

again..if you're going to be nosey and read the comments, read them fully, because i wasnt the one who started an arguement about art classes.
TheEgg
TheEgg on Mar 11 '05
WOW YOU CANT READ!!! read the comment i made before you didnt respond, what does it say. "I like this ALOT" this is why i said , GROW UP. Grown up people (Adults), know how to read. Reading is esential to life, obviously you haven't grasped that concept.
cskelm

man, people gotta stop ragging on chimbleysweep. I see something in the image, not sure what, but i see something. i'm not going to get into the argument, in fact don't respond to this because i'm not goign to reply, but i see chimbleysweep's point. conceptual art can have a meaning to the artist, a different meaning to one person and no meaning to another. some of my conceptual art totally stunned and confused people, but they still liked it. a couple people even got it. maybe some day i'll find some of it that will fit on a shirt, and the money i get from them will go towards buying this. and TheEgg, you are a confusing person. try keeping your voice down.

u guys are fukin funny........pure verbal diarrhea, stop trying to out do each other with your comments, if the crit aint constructive, then stik it up your culo!! GO CHIMBLEYSWEEP!!!! your design is ace my friend, love the hands.
StitchedUp
StitchedUp on Mar 12 '05
i agree with cheech full heartedly. And i also agree with alot of the things chimbleysweep said. He's just putting out his work here for the ratings and thoughts... not just useless arguements...

anyway, i think the artwork is awesome. I understood what you were aiming for without any problems. The only issue i have with the image itself is it seems like the T.V. is just dropped ontop of the arms. Perhaps it would look nicer if the arms sketched smoother into the edges of the TV. I could be wrong... but its just a thought.

Good luck with future work man.

i understand what you said about the arms..yeah it would look better if they looked more like they were growing from the tv. i'll try that, thanks.

and yes, i am a girl, haha. :]

Too bad such a great design has such a boring thread of comments to go along with it. You rock, chimbleysweep! To me, playing cat's cradle is such a such a mindless repetative activity.... just like watching t.v. Agree with the other comments about needing to change the design of the t.v. Other than that 5+. (Like the darker colors for the shirt.)
takethetrain
takethetrain on Mar 13 '05
as most others have said, the tv should be done better, in the same style as the arms.

also, to support another comment that has been made, if you want to convey that the media is controlling (or as you said, "influential") then the tv should be in a more powerful, upright position, rather than on its side. how often do you see a tv that way unless it is broken?
oxy_moron_40
oxy_moron_40 on Mar 13 '05
