meh... I really like the drawing, but I'm frustrated by the fact that if it didn't tell me it was an elephant, I wouldn't know what it was... but I also really hate the cutesyness of "Ella Fant".

I like it but there would be way too many people asking me what it was, and then when I'd tell them, all I'd get would be an "oh"

when you say cute, do you mean cute or cutesy? there is a difference (look them up if you don't believe me... I don't mind one and will agree, I can't stand the other :)... On the note that you can't tell what it is I wanted to share a quick story. I was wearing a keith haring radiant baby tee from the pop shop and some one asked me why the guy was bending over... people will see what they want to see :)

i digress

Well I didn't notice the thing was an elephant either. Eh, the typography isn't all that nicely presented either. Lines seem thin and hard to distinguish the elephant form.

I love to get comments and constructive criticism, but I was hoping that if you are going to say that something is bad you could tell me why you think it isn't working? For Instance why do you not see the elephant? What do you think you see instead of an elephant? Is it significant that the text is a caption not a title for the image? Is it significant that the caption does not say the image is an elephant, but refers to it as being Ella Fant? How would I present the typography better?

Thanks for your input

Usualy a good desgin got something clever to it, besides it being good for the eye.
there is no point here, uv drawn an elephant, and wrote elle fant.
im not getting thrilled by that, its not interesting to me.

this line drawing doesnt work very well on a t shirt, for the reason its not telling anything and probably the lines are just too small, need bigger lines.

hope u found this constructive, better luck next time.

Think it's great.. no need for the ella phant - I can see it's an elephant, I also see a girl and a guy.. the guy dancing/stomping his feet..? Maybe it's me but I think it'd get cool comments if worn..

Lose the text tho'... and I'd buy it!

Shurd... You've not really criticized it, as much as again said its just bad and doesn't work and you don't find it interesting. I don't know you're training, but that wouldn't hold up in any critical sense. And by definition Design isn't clever, its about efficiency and ease of use. In architecture this is reference to space, in theatre its about the ideas of the text, in fashion it is about body and movement and in graphics its really about presenting the information given in a clear and pleasing manor so that someone will read it entirely.

What you've claimed as there being no point applies to a good 99 percent of the tee shirts on threadless, which isn't at all bad... it's all tee shirts. it's not about anything but the image and if it works. If you aren't thrilled thats fine of course, you don't like it. The reason the line drawing doesn't work well I think you hit on a possibility, the weight of the lines isn't heavy enough to stand out against the dark blue shirt.

Though insofar as telling anybody anything I think jmmyme hit it on the head with the ambiguity I was going fore. I'm so thrilled that you saw the other things in it and I know I want other people to think about the image and what it is exactly. This i what I wanted to go for with the text... because yes its an elephant, but the word play to Ella Fant which turns it to a two word homophonic pronoun as opposed to the word for an animal, implies ambiguity and a secondary reading... this seems not to be clear to most people though since it seems that the reading of the graphic as a whole has the form as ambiguous and the text defining the image before the form is deciphered. The text is recognized before the form so the phonic definition prejudices what you want to see in the form and because it is ambiguous, it doesn't work because you want to see the elephant.

I wonder if then those who like it are seeing the form first and then reading the text so that the image isn't prejudiced, and conversely is those who do not like it are reading the text first (drawn to it by the heavier weight and angular forms) and then unsatisfied with the form in its ambiguity.

Thoughts?

I think its a shame for a anyone to claim to be a designer or know about design and then refer to any item as something that doesn't require to be analyzed. If you're going to be a designer be one, you can't make value calls on what it worthy of good design and what isn't. There are people who become doctorates of design. I myself any only working on a masters. If you want to be a designer you have to talk the talk and be able to explain your work and why something does or does not work, otherwise you're a kid with access to photoshop and maybe a crafter.

I probably pissed someone off with that comment.

Well I didn't see the text at first that's for sure - I saw the elephant, then the guy and girl.. only when I read the comments that I went back to the pic and saw it..

But.. I still say lose the text. And while analysing is fine for some, personally I prefer to simply 'enjoy'.. if you 'get it' then you 'get it' - its like a joke that needs explaining.. if you have to explain it then somehow it loses it's impact. I don't think as a designer you have to talk-the-talk at all, or explain everything you do - that's just conforming to expectations in the designer lah-de-dah world (I know this - I work at several ad agencies).. same goes for a lot of modern art I find.

Anyone remember that scene in Mallrats with the stereogram thing? The fat guy would have by far preferred it if no-one had told him 'it's a boat' and if he'd have seen it under his own steam..

The more people analyse, I find the more pessimistic they become. Maybe that's just my experience.. certainly true for movies. Oh dear. I seem to be analysing myself .. somebody stop me quick!

I'd still buy it.. but not while it has the text.. too girly :)

That's all I have to say - anymore and I'll be dragged into something I really don't want to be dragged into. I came here for cool looking tees.. and have found some!

Enjoy!

I wanted to apologize for anyone who was offended by any comments about training as a designer. I was necessarily referring to school for training, working for a company, apprenticeships so forth are all training. I more so meant that it was important to be able to talk about a design in a critical way so you can identify what makes it strong or weak cause as a mentor once told me there is no right or wrong in design just what works and what doesn't.

thanks all for putting up with me!
