About my design
by jon-jon
This is a resubmission...I had a font on the old version that to my knowledge was royalty-free, but it was taking a while to get approved and i figured maybe that was why. Anyway I like this MUCH better...this text is a stylized version of a line from one of the Shiva Sutras, I created it myself so it is NOT a font...

Other than that, same as before, Shiva the Destroyer opening his Third Eye to annihilate the world. Isn't he cute?

history lesson... according to Saivism, Siva is just another name for god. He has 5 aspects, the creator, destroyer, preserver, revealer and concealer. Rudra is actually the aspect that does the destroying as far as worlds are involved. Einstein called Siva an almost perfect symbol for the universe, if you study some of the old indian art (not the stuff with naked people) it's really quite cool if you get into the symbolism. Each hand gesture has a meaning, the snake has a meaning, the crescent moon has a meaning... the third eye for instance doesn't shoot lasers.

Your design is very cute, not sure if fitting. Reminds me of powerful girls, or this game:
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/pop-pop/

I used to be able to read sanskrit but can only make out a few of your characters.

stop using the 'dripping effect' for like everything, it's boring and doesn't fit in

nice graphic tho, but the dripping ruins it

Iew! Too chibi for my taste. Too cute. Blegh.

I know you probably don't mean it that way, but it looks really patronizing and disrespectful to me. But I guess that's just me. But that's why I would never wear it.

The design, artistically, is pretty nifty. Choice of colour is cool too.

OK, reply to the critics...

First of all, i do apologize for my "resubmission." I just found this site and I was too anxious to get a design on, I should've made sure I was actually done with it - so sorry!

I don't read Sanskrit. Like I said, it's heavily stylized and (I'm sure) bastardized from the last line of one of the Shiva Sutras: "When a Shiva-Yogi is completely established in God Consciousness, he experiences this state spontaneously within and without or both."

I can see why some people might find this "patronizing and disrespectful," and frankly, I DON'T respect dogmatic religion. If you believe in Shiva the way a lot of Americans believe in Jesus, then you simply haven't progressed beyond a 3rd-grade simplistic world view. But it seems to me, maybe just because it is from another culture, that there's more room in Hinduism to interpret the symbols AS symbols rather than literally. Then again, the "sacred cow" comes from India! I guess basically my feeling is that people who are likely to be offended because I used religious symbols don't really get what religion is about in the first place. "Shiva destroying the Universe" is symbolic of a certain "mystic" state. If you think Shiva is some gaseous vertebrate up in the clouds who's gonna get pissed at me cuz I used his image, and whip my ass with all 6 arms, then you might as well go to church with George W. Bush.

Lastly, the "drips." Get over it. I don't like people telling me which crayons I can and can't use. It works with this design. It's like how with almost everything that gets posted on here, somebody goes "drop the text," apparently because somebody told them that once in critiques and they now think it applies to EVERYTHING. Again, dogmatism. But no, actually sometimes you can use text, and sometimes you can even use drips.

Sorry I typed so fucking much, and I probably don't mean to sound like such a fucking bitch. I'm at work, I'm caffeinated, and the boss is gone...lol

Actually I agree with you on what you said about religion. And it's not so much that I think this is disrespectful and patronizing to the people who believe in Shiva. It's more that I wouldn't want to wear this because it's so meaningless. It doesn't have some religous statement, nor sarcasm and that's why I find it patronizing.
But on the other hand I understand you did that because it's just damn pleasing to the eye. And I'm sure a lot of people would buy this, but just not me. And I was just trying to explain that in my previous comment, I wasn't trying to be a politically correct nitpick :)
I'm sorry I got into this because now I see you just wanted to make a pretty design and the last thing you need then is getting shit loaded over you about "meanings" and stuff behind it.

njones on Jan 21 '05
the sanskrit sounds like: bhuupah spaa---imilanam
if you could somehow show me what the rest says i could tell you how it sounds, but not necessarily what it means....it looks like its one of the Thousand Names of Shiva, Bhuupah means Earth-Protector, or King,
and the end of it probably means something like "the one who is" or "the one with the name of" etc
its a cool design, much better w/ the actual sanskrit text, agreed that its a bit power puffyish....but thats just me
jon-jon
jon-jon on Jan 21 '05
No, I like talking about it, and I expected to get that kind of response to this so I was ready...lol. And yeah, first and foremost it's just a pretty picture - after all we're designing clothes here. But don't get me wrong, I could go into "meanings," I know all the symbolism and I don't think making it "cute" takes away from that, I just don't imagine that people are really going to care about my explanation. Hell probably nobody cares about this. So let's just call it an exotic, foreign-looking image along the lines of "Mr. Sparkle."

i think i am going to have to disagree w/ m.u.g. i think i almost found the comments more interesting than the design . . . no disrespect intended to the design, i think that it is cute and well done . . . and yes, it totally reminds me of Powerpuff Girls as well, but i think that is kind of the point of the majority of the designs that get submitted and printed on this site . . . in a way, they are meant to be conversation pieces b/c they aren't something that you would find in the mall or any store. so, i think a little discussion is welcome.

as for the design itself, i think the resubmission w/ the sanskrit is much better than the original submission and i applaud you for creating (even if bastardized) your own version of the text. and not just for dogmatic reason or because they are clearly so taboo on this site but the drips aren't really doing anything for me personally . . . i mean i if you are going to go w/ Hindu imagery and symbols why not have him sitting on a lotus blossom rahter than drips which don't really pertain to the image itself. just a thought. but i still gave it a 4 . . . i look forward to seeing more of your work.

jon-jon, I'm going to respond to comments not re: the design just because this is a topic that interests me and maybe some other people find it interesting as well, but sounds like you know what you're talking about. True, if you believe Shiva is some dude sitting up in the clouds you are a little wacked, but the people in that religion who do "believe in" Shiva, believe he is the fucking cloud, the energy that allows your fingers move and why your lungs keep breathing, you don't consciously move them yourself, do you? Sanskrit perhaps is a dead language in that it isn't used anymore to communicate between people (I don't know that it ever was), but it is still read and chanted today by a gazillion priests in india during the ceremonies they do in the temples, I guess sorta akin to latin and catholics. The religion isn't dogmatic, it's very open minded, accepts that other religions have truth in them too. The cow is considered sacred not because it is thought to have magical powers, but because from it you get milk, which can be used to make butter, ghee, ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese, cream, cheese, etc.. think how often you come in contact with dairy products... cows are pretty fucking cool, think how cool one would be if you're the only single guy in your village who has one... two words: milkmaids. Anyway nice design, might want to round the type a little less to make more legible if it's going to be printed, like I think the second character is supposed to be sharper, less round, I think the line at the top connecting them should be continuous, perhaps think about the positioning a bit if you don't want it obscured by the necklace. I don't think the shirt is disrespectful or anything, I gave it a 4. Though I don't think I'd buy it. But maybe for my 3 year old nephew or niece.

thanx everybody for your comments - especially x laurrraaaa, you sweet thing. i didn't mean to start a discourse on religion, i really was just thinking of this as an aesthetically pleasing image although i know the meaning behind it, but i like what people had to say along those lines. i would agree that overall the hindu culture is probably far less dogmatic than the christian. and ok people, maybe i'll even think about a fucking lotus or something instead of the drips, would that make you motherfuckers happy!!

lol...actually if anybody thinks i'm "blasting" them, they're being too defensive...this is what i call a conversation! maybe this looses something in the translation, but i am not being deadly serious here. i miss critiques! anyway i know i've been a relentless bitch on some of my comments, but i can take it as well as i can dish it out. and i do really enjoy the feedback....p.s....if i call somebody a "motherfucker," i am almost certainly NOT serious at that particular moment. ;)

the drips arent drippy enough to be DRIP drips...if you know what i mean...
they almost remind me of a dc skate hoodie i have that looks like the dc has 'drips', but said 'drips' actually have straight edges and form a city skyline...
kinda looks like a little upside-down skyline of rounded buildings and the whatnot..and the rounded-ness of the upside-down skyline i sort of see reminds me of taj mahal, which is in india, which is enough of a neat connection for me to not hate the drips, even if this siva has no connection whatsoever to the taj mahal...

anyways, nice clean design :) it looks quite splendid on the grey.

I've only briefly scanned the comments upthread and uh... personally I kinda sorta - gee how do I say this - like the drips (as jon-jon can attest) but I want to be impartial and ponder to critique this quietly on its own merit... so I say <.... takes deep cleansing breath....> Nice T-Shirt Bitch! You upbumped to 5 'n Buy becuz it hakz on khak!
