For those who don't quite get it, it's a Venn diagram of an apple and an orange. The idiom "apples and oranges" means you're trying to compare two things that really can't be compared to begin with. Hence why the middle of the Venn diagram is blank...'cause there's nothing to compare.
interestingly, (and perhaps ironically) it looks like the inside of an apple, and in fact, the white-ish skin around the inside of the orange might lead people to the conclusion that they can be compared
