For this design I used a mash-up of two old illustrations from the 1800's as reference. An image from LIFE magazine (exact date and artist unknown) and an engraving from Louis Figurier's "The World Before the Deluge" (1865). If you're curious to see the original reference material please visit my blog on the subject.
I love the old style of these illustrations and tried to retain the mood of the originals. As usual I used micron pens and graphite and coloured it in photoshop but went for a soft, painterly look to give it more of a vintage feel. I illustrated the waves and background clouds in a different style and then added elements like the harpooner, palm tree and tall ship. As far as the concept goes I wanted to make a statement about our unfortunate habit of hunting wonderful, rare creatures to extinction, while visualizing it in an absurd and unlikely context. I hope my design is good enough that it honours the original sources while also offering something new of it's own. Sim process on silver or sage stone. Is this a secret weird Mormon thing? You know, dinosaurs and man being around at the same time?! Cuz they weren't...but I know, it's just fantasy and you did it super freaking well.

Wonderful, magical scene...like something you almost feel could have happened somewhere between the old world and a dream. Way to channel that energy.
