not to be a debbie downer but thats how men wore their facial hair back in those times, chaplin also used it in a mocking sense in a lot of his films. they didnt "take" anything away from him.

I'm fully aware of the style and of Chaplin's work - the point is that the mustache is almost always associated specifically with Hitler, the shirt is petitioning a shift in that association.
