Where I used to work we nicknamed Starbucks "Fivebucks" because that's pretty much what it costs to buy anything there! I mainly went to Tim Horton's (a popular Canadian chain) for my daily fix because the coffee is so much cheaper and "Fivebucks" was like a rare treat that I could only occasionally indulge in.

So, I present to you the mythical Five Bucks Coffee Company, producers of the most amazing coffee on the planet. The iconic owl logo pictured above has become a symbol of enduring quality among discerning coffee connoisseurs. Select beans are harvested by specially-trained circus monkeys only during a full moon in a remote region of the Andes and then roasted slowly to perfection over a smouldering lava pit. Tasting notes: smoky, rich, intoxicating, with chocolate notes and a hint of nutmeg. Priced considerably higher than inferior brands but I can assure you it's worth every penny. :)

Not sure if this matters for Threadless, but a similar shirt was sold on shirt.woot . Regardless, love the execution with this design. :)

mitamasan - damn, that is so annoying! This is the second time I've been screwed by shirtwoot, similar thing happened with my gummie bear design. :( I had no idea about the design you linked to but am shocked it was even allowed to print because to me it's way too similar to the original logo and is clearly copyright infringement. Same colours, exact same logo etc. I'm sure Starbucks would have a problem with that if they were aware of it.

Anyway, I'm not totally surprised someone would come up with the same idea because it's not that much of a leap. Don't want to come off as overly-confident but I think my design is more original and the treatment sets it apart. Looks like the woot design just lifted the actual logo and modified a couple of things whereas my design is entirely hand-drawn and has original elements.

igo2cairo, in fact your design is waaaaaaaaaay better than the other one, to be honest, it happenned for me a few times, it's always annoying, but not surprising, that people have the same idea one day or another, after all, especially on connections like that, so don't worry ;-)

Believe me, at the time we were shocked it was allowed to print, too. Sadly, for as up-in-arms as people get about pop-culture and lazy reference here, it is about 8 times worse at woot on a good week.

It's a sticky area, because yours is clearly better... I'm a big fan of "first is best," but with a simple idea like this (and it really is a simple idea) it's hard to really force that, especially since the woot tee was printed so damn long ago and was so damn unattractive and uncreative. But on the other hand, even then I recall people complaining that the idea was done before.

I think the idea's just a victim of circumstance. Especially seeing as how starbucks is part sponsor of this little contest.

Would never wear anything associated with Starfucks, but love the story behind this and the imagination infused into their logo. OMG, how did that other Fivebucks design even get printed for copyright and lack of imagination issues?
