Smart Nouveau is a cutesy nod at the classic style of Alphonse Mucha.

Charmstub - Almost half of my tee collection (around 20) are grey, and I wear them regularly. Oh, and I don't look horrible.

Kehlar - Yes, she does look disneyish. Many artists draw their styles from Disney, and most of them are great. Check out Loish, for example.

I did consider posting this to the coffee challenge, but I didn't think my design was coffee oriented *enough* to warrant the special category. There are way better, more coffee-centric designs in the contest already that are just more appropriate.

Plus I like the open interpretation that it could also be tea up there!

It's good you're becoming more active in the community. I hope in the future, you'll try and post a design without advertising on DA or Livejournal. I'd like to see what the community *here* thinks about your work, not the zombies at DA. You obviously have talent. I'd just like to see what happens when the horde isn't involved.
EmmyCic
   EmmyCic on May 22 '10
"not the zombies at DA"
First of all, my friends and fans at deviant art are mostly very bright, considerate people and I take offense to them being called zombies.
Sometimes they like my work, sometimes my work totally tanks.

"You obviously have talent"
Which is precisely why I have an audience for which to share my designs with. Do you think I have some sort of cheat for getting views and feedback? No. I put out a *lot* of artwork a week, and it draws in viewers, and I work very hard to market myself.

I don't do anything that nobody else couldn't do, so try it sometime for yourself!

The anatomy is a little wonky, but very cute. Watch out about putting the head too far forward on the neck. Long, thin necks are pretty, but this is coming off as more of a mistake than a deliberate style choice.

I actually really like the grey I think it's a really nice contrast and other colours would probably mean the book pages or skin blends in to well to the background colour and doesn't stand out at all.

Also I'm always impressed by just how much work (the good and even the not so much) that you manage to create weekly, especially now I've been stricken with crippling art block.

I apologize if I've sounded mean spirited. I've seen that you've had too much of that already. I didn't mean to convey that your fanbase is unintelligent or inconsiderate, or that you haven't worked to get where you are. But coming from DA, most of them who would go through the trouble to get here are probably going to vote '5' (hence, my zombies comment, though now I see it wasn't such a good word choice). They love you and will support you however they can. Even those who don't necessarily want this on a shirt. Though you're bringing people here to the site, a lot of them are just signing up to vote for *you*. I understand you can't control that sort of thing(and it's great that you're prompting those same voters to get involved in the community!), but I hope you'll acknowledge, or at least not dismiss, the frustration some of us feel at an outside fanbase coming in and making sure you get a good score (because I can almost guarantee this will have a 4 point score if not more). You ARE talented. I see great things coming from you in the tee community. I just hope you'll learn more about it and teach others about it too through your fanbase. And for the record, I don't have quite the fanbase you do (not even close), but I think I do a good job. ;) Not all of us are jealous, Emmy. We just want to see you become one of us.
EmmyCic
   EmmyCic on May 22 '10
"the frustration some of us feel at an outside fanbase coming in and making sure you get a good score"

Like I said, I don't do anything nobody else couldn't do.
Any other Threadless artist could get a DA account and a Livejournal and spend 5 years generating interest.

Telling me not to bring my fans and friends here would be detrimental for everyone! True, it's not going to be %100 of them signing up and being active members, but if %10 or even %5 take an extra interest in Threadless, it will benefit everyone!

It's worth it to outsource interest.

I acknowledge that it is frustrating to watch me have success when others do not, but the answer doesn't lie in slowing me down, but rather speeding yourself up.

chickeninabiscuit on May 22 '10
Your drawing skills are pretty good; but it's not really a strong enough concept for me to want to wear it on a shirt. I'd like to see your style and old school threadless concept mashed together, look through some of the older stuff sold here to see what I'm talking about - "butterflies in the attic" and "spaghetti western" are good examples. I think if you push your concepts more along with your drawing talents you can blow everyone away. Also for me the layout looks more like something you'd see accompanying a magazine article, say, than something you'd wear, if that makes sense. I like art nouveau but I think this layout doesn't work as well on the front of a tee. "Last Days of Summer" is a good example of characters integrated with the tee more, but there are tons others, it's worth perusing the catalog. Phew that was long, but hopefully constructive!

Mo, most reasonable people are not upset because she'll print. Most reasonable people are worried that she's only here to print shirts, make money, and all without being a part of the community(i.e. vote for others/comment/get involved/learn/etc.).

Emmy, let me do a complete 180. Asking you not to advertise *is* wrong. You're right that anyone here could do that (and some of us do). The only difference is, most of us know the community or are a part of it already(and we're all still learning too), and we regularly encourage others to get into it as well.
Of course it's fine that you bring people here to vote(though I hardly think it's detrimental to us for you *not* to bring them here ;)), but the tee community is a little different than DA or Livejournal. I really hope you'll do more to encourage your fans to become a part of it/understand it. And I can only hope some of them are voting objectively(though goodness knows I'm sure there are those here that don't).
**But most of all, I hope you'll do the same thing you did on livejournal and DA: build yourself up and get to know the people passionate about tee design. Get to know some fans/designers. Browse other tee sites. Start voting and commenting on other's shirts. Become one of us! :)

No one reasonable wants to slow you down. We just want to know you worked for it *here* too. That you care about tee design and the people who love it, not just printing. And that you also care about educating others about the culture too.

tl;dr: DA is a family. Threadless is another(probably smaller) family. Both require maintenance and love to be a part of successfully. I wish you well here at Threadless and hope you'll give us just as much as attention as you do your DA family. ;)

Sorry about all the walls of text. I swear this is all I gotta say. ;)

"Most reasonable people are worried that she's only here to print shirts, make money"

Well I am here to do that. Threadless is first and foremost a business, and a great one, and I love working with it.

Threadless may have a thick community, but whether or not people submerse themselves in it is their own business.
I don't think it's unreasonable for a person to sub with Threadless and not be as active in the community.

I, personally, would like to be active, but asking it of me like it's my obligation is a big turn off. I don't like a community that has expectations that must be met or else people will be offput by you.

Just let people acclimate on their own time, jump in and have fun. It shouldn't be their *duty*, it should be their pleasure!

"get to know the people passionate about tee design. Get to know some fans/designers."
I'd love to do this. Point me in the direction of the ones that don't have a preconceived grievance with me and I'll buddy up ;) haha

Emmy you won the biggest prize in the history of Threadless, and never once said a word in the blogs, that's what put us off. We didn't expect you to be best friends with anyone here, but at least one hello world blog or something would have been nice. But you're right it's not your responsibility to be involved here. I personally don't like this design, but I know it will print so I'm just wasting my time even bothering to vote, but I would love to see more designs from you.

Indeed. you could just as easily have an internet fanbase at least in part built by your brother being a far more popular internet figure. I don't see why threadless hasn't thought of this before. Surely one of you is tight personal friends with Tay Zonday, or the guys who created Charlie the Unicorn.

"you could just as easily have an internet fanbase at least in part built by your brother being a far more popular internet figure"
It's true, my brother is a very famous dude, but a nice chunk of that fame came from Potterpals, which I helped build from the ground up and write for.

Am I going to apologize for being involved in things besides art, like film and comedy? No way.

My brother has never linked to my Deviant art page on his youtube channel before. Most people that watch me on Deviant art don't even know who he is.

I'm not really sure what any of you want from me exactly? You want me to be more active in the community, but if that means me sitting here trying to argue why I have a right to be here, that doesn't sound like much fun to me

I'm personally not loving this one, and not because it is a "disney rip off" (i think its not), is more about the jagged upper lines and her body proportions (the legs mainly)

In Mucha's work, the figure is an integral element of the design, whereas in this design it feels as though you have a design in the background and a figure in front of it. There are colours and elements of the line used in her hair, for instance, that tie it together to some extent but overall the girl and the background design elements seem like two separate entities and, for the tilt of your cap towards Mucha to be successful, they need to operate as a single, unified element. The colours are unflattering, especially against the particular grey of that shirt, and the shape of the design isn't particularly exciting on a shirt.

For the record, I'm not rating this very highly but I do enjoy your work posted elsewhere. I just don't think this is a very successful shirt design.

Emmy, I'm excited to see that you're subbing here again. You said,
"Please understand that I definitely would not get an honest critique here at Threadless, it would be mostly nasty comments rather than constructive stuff, as the above comments have illustrated :(" I think that you'll see that to some degree anywhere you go for whatever reason. But I've seen some great designs turn into incredible designs because of the input from the great designers here on Threadless, and it wouldn't hurt to put up some WIP blogs every once in a while. Also, a good amount of us are being lumped into a big generalization by saying that you're going to get "mostly" nasty comments. I think you could get a lot of good feedback, but that might just be wishful thinking.

Aaron Randy Otter is a great artist in my opinion, and he usually has some great ideas. He's just a little brash on the delivery sometimes.

Also, say what you want, Laura has a nice neck but Dez's is the only one for me.

I'll consider it next time! I get the feeling a lot of people have a negative preconceived notion of me due to the contest, but if you feel that most people here are mature enough to overlook that in the interest of giving me some honest critique, I'll definitely consider it!

"Emmy, I think you could benefit my posting a critique or a WIP blog. People can give you small suggestions and your design will improve a lot I think. "

I posted this up for critique on my LJ in private for my artist peers to nitpick, and they helped me a looot!

Please understand that I definitely would not get an honest critique here at Threadless, it would be mostly nasty comments rather than constructive stuff, as the above comments have illustrated :(

Emmy, you have it backwards.

Go back and actually read all the comments. Ignore all the "controversial" comments, the personal stuff, the Bestee crap and just read the comments that are actually about your design.

You have it completely backwards. The people you think supposedly hate you and the supposedly nasty things they're going to say about your design are the things that are going to help you improve the design.

Your private friends on Live Journal cannot give a Threadless design the kind of advice that Threadless voters will give you. I'm sure they were able to help a biiiiit, but they're not at all familiar with what's going to do well here. I don't know them, maybe they can be super-objective and critical, but sometimes it pays to have a bit of distance. You're ignoring your best source of advice.

Go back and read your comments from your LJ/DA "zombies." They might like you and be fans and be nice to you but their slavish praise won't help you get printed again if you're submitting substandard crap.

Threadless voters have already told you about the problems with her anatomy, her neck, the hideous orange outline (ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS!) and the Disneyness. You've got unpopular colour choices on an unsuitable shirt colour and you're getting shitty advice on the shirt colour from your "zombie." (Who cares if your last print was on cream? That's just dumb advice.) You've also missed the opportunity to at least have a discussion about the Loves Coffee contest. Maybe you're right not to enter it for it, but it pays to throw some questions around with us.

All these flaws could have been found before you submitted the design if you'd put it up for Critique here and instead you've wasted this opportunity to vastly improve your design. Don't worry about getting "mostly nasty comments" on a Critique. You'll get a lot of constructive advice too. Just take a look here. You've got some nasty comments, but you've got some constructive advice too. The difference is, if you get advice here it's too late to do anything about it.

Like, this basicallyemily person is very nice to defend your design but she's never even scored a design. Who do you really want helping your designs out?

Seconding what SJ27 said!

I think it also might be a good idea to try doing a shirt with those characters in that other sketchy style that you have, the one you asked about making a comic with. It would even be nice to see a clever little shirt using those Halloween characters of yours.

Maybe for next time, you could try thinking about making a design that is not contained in a circle in the center. You could do a really cool one with a big picture splattered over the whole shirt. I'd definitely want to wear something like that with those other characters of yours.

i see a LOT OF PEOPLE throwing up opinions and opinions about details of the artwork.
that's NOT A CRITIQUE SECTION in case most of you haven't noticed.

emily, they're not being fair with you. your sub is better than at least 80% of the subs usually seen here and i don't remember seeing this kind of thorough scrutiny recently.

fact is there is a lot of jealously round here.
and as people don't want to admit that they will use subterfuges to hit you. mostly ridiculous things such as the colors (the palette is actually pretty cool), the anatomy (for Christ's sake, you gotta be kidding me! Anatomy inaccuracy???!!!) or that she looks like a man (won't even bother commenting on this one).

keep up, girl. all these haters will have to move on one day or another. there's still a lot of people here that totally stand by you.

Conceptually, this is great! Stylistically, it needs a good amount of work. You've lost the sexy fluid lines Mucha is known for. The whole composition feels stiff and contrived and possibly too cartoonish (I get Little Mermaid vibe). But the tea cups pouring the frame is a smart choice! 3

I appreciate you as an illustrator, Emmy, but I don't think this is your strongest design ever. It's not something that I would wear personally, but I could maybe see it appealing to a younger pre-teen crowd.

Others have already given good feedback so I won't beat a dead horse, although I would like to re-emphasize the point made about getting critique from your live journal followers. When you post your work on your live journal, you generally don't welcome critique. If you really do want to make improvements on your designs (or even your illustrations), I think making a public statement welcoming constructive critique could be a great move. A lot of professional artists follow your work, and that is a great resource that you are not currently drawing from. And, when people do offer critique, take it professionally. Learning how to accept critique is one of the most difficult steps toward becoming a professional artist.

Hope to see more designs from you in the future. :)

Emmy let me put it this way if Alexmdc produced a subpar design he'd hear about it too, you might have got a little extra due to some lingering bad feelings about Toile, but the fact of the matter is, this design isn't great by Threadless standards, and SJ is right about how the critique section might have helped you. Sigh, this place tires me out sometimes.

Make art, not war, critique the design, not the person. There's people I cannot stand on this site personality wise but I've given their designs 5$'s because the art/concept deserved it. I like the swirlyness of this design, the border is really great, but the clip-art-ish stars kind of clash with the character and the style of the rest of it, not a big fan of the shirt color choice against the colors in the design, but definitely a charming illo.

We didn't expect you to be best friends with anyone here, but at least one hello world blog or something would have been nice.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I commented on a blog by Emmy that got a couple hundred comments where she addressed the Threadless community.

Don't wait another few weeks to put something else out if you could, just keep producing things on tees that would score highly even without the extra votes and fans coming in and boosting the score.

I'm not a fan of lots of outside promotion for Threadless shirts, it should be the main community here that constantly voted for designs , but it's not illegal and in fact encouraged by Threadless, but that is more of a business move on their part, something I don't need to be influenced by which is why I say i'd rather a design get 500 votes from seasoned Threadless voters than 3,000 votes mostly from people who are friends and well-wishers who hit 5 and $ on your design and then move on. But like i said, there's nothing wrong with doing this by Threadless standards.

Good luck is what I'm trying to say!

"Any other Threadless artist could get a DA account and a Livejournal and spend 5 years generating interest."

This.

It's very hard to gain a following on DA. You can do it, but it takes an awful lot of effort, and a ridiculous amount of constant art submitting. It's like being a needle in a haystack. You get burried very quickly by the hundreds (or thousands) of other people just like you. It takes a lot to stand out.

As for the design, it's not quite what I like to wear, but it's very nicley done character art ^^. It would make a great print for sure. I think it's the tee color. Would look nice on brown for sure. Also I agree that you should try placing the designs on some of the Tless model photographs. It makes for way awesome comps. If you search for Threadless on Flikr you'll find them :).

I'm really surprised at the behavior here. I thought Tless has less of this kind of stuff than Woot, but I guess I was wrong. Man. Drama Llama Ding-Dong. Makes me very sad inside. It's like you're damned if you do, damned if you dont (have a following). What is even more sad, is I see people here behaving really badly who I KNOW have followers..in fact they thrive on it. 9_9 -shakes head-

No one's jealous, people. That comeback holds about as much weight as playing Godwin's Law. I think there's just a lot of concern around these parts because EmmyCic's pre-Threadless fanbase skews the results of voting. A lot.

I don't blame her, but it's something that's worth being concerned about, and it's not being "mean" or "jealous" to point it out. It's a bizarre collision of two worlds.

But I also don't hold it against her, either. However, her results are skewed. Frankly, it's easy to get annoyed when someone like TheInfinityLoop has not printed once, or even achieved a score this high.

C'mon Bass, this isn't kindergarten. People should voice their complaints when they have them. It's far preferable to the lala-land of that would replace it otherwise. If much prefer drama, even of the silly variety, to any attempts to quash it for the sake of appearances.

I myself am slow to enter online communities. I hope that none of this silliness gets you down. I know that there are a lot of people who think art that has a Disney or anime influence isn't art, or something, but everyone has a genre or style that they enjoy and interests them. I haven't been here for long and while reading through these comments I felt a bit uneasy. I thought this was a community for all styles. I love tee's!
