And no offense at all to buko - he's, by far, one of the best designers on this site. Just getting tired of the same old "let's make pop culture icons look like something else" trick. He's capable of so much more.

But I'll hold my tongue in the future so I don't offend the sensitive tless community. Sorry!

I feel all this criticism is unjustified. sometimes people need to take a step back from the opinionation (I know thats not really a word) and just appreciate something for what it is. This design is incredibly well done, we all know it and I feel like no one can really successfully refute that. Seriously great work man keep it up.

the pop culture hate seems a bit weird to me, I know some people just want to see ART but to each their own, it sells well and I think it's brilliant! buko has shown more then enough time he can do more then well enough without the pop culture reference, I think this design is amazing, and well executed, no need for people to trash it, it almost seems like jealousy. Look at the design for what it is, I understand when pop culture is done bad, but this is well thought out and executed perfectly!
Naolito
   Naolito on May 17 '10
I feel bad for buko for having so many problems with some comments lately. But I think too that they wouldn't criticize him if he weren't a threadless top5. Alex has expresed it perfectly, it seems jealousy.

Again, congrats for another brilliant design buko. No matter what a minority says.

Jebs
   Jebs on May 17 '10
i clearly agree with alexmdc! We are not making ART, we are making designs for tee shirt, and it's all about that, do you want to wear it...? do you think it's wearable?

Of course, the concept has to be strong, the design has to be a minimum well drawn, and using Pop CUlture has to have a sense...i think that here, Buko makes all that: Amazingly done, conceptually good (not of course a stunning concept, but strong enough IMO), and prettywearable! what else?

well, 5$$$

whether it is art, a tee shirt or whatever, it still represents the designer the person wearing it and the threadless community and as part of that I am always going to have a problem with trying to make money off other peoples work regardless of that persons talent. If picasso walked in here and painted me luke skywalker I would ask why the hell is he doing it because he is far more talented than that (also dead), yet the irony being it would still sell for thousands and thousands. So sure churn out vaguely different parodies if you so wish but I doubt it will feel as good as creating something that is truly yours.

and this one by Buko is cooooool!

Okay so definitely great used of software and techniques, but what’s the concept? Why is it that “Homer” is coming out as smoke from some kind of an antique nuclear power plant? And “Marge” is excelling out of the water? And why are they both portrayed as a Frankenstein creature? Design is about making things work not about making things pretty. But again great work just put a meaning into it. 2.1!

It's incredibly illustrated but it's been done before (refer to the link above), similar to the star wars one he did. Just want to see Buko go back to his ROOTS when his stuff was fresh and original. That's all.

admission: I had never seen the actual Simpsons reference, yet I had an idea to make Homer Frankenstein and Marge the Bride or whatever she is in this sub, because of the hair. Really awesome concept and great execution as usual! I don't get people criticizing designs with pop culture references, sure are a lot of people willing to buy them so how can you blame the designer? I look upon it as a specific genre that has it's place.

Yeah, it's a trend, but it's really tough to think of a design with a good, clever pop cultural reference, at least for me it is. For those who criticize, I challenge you to come up with a good one of your own. Anyway, I'm jumping on the band-wagon and have one in the works that I'm pretty excited about. :)

Heh, fans. Half the time, we crucify artists for taking the same stand against our narrow view of them that they took against everyone else in the first place, and that made us their fans to begin with.

I think it's super hypocritical for us to demand that buko go back to "his old style" because we are dissatisfied. Why is catering to the "purist" crowd any better than catering to the "general public"? Artists go thru phases the same way audiences do, and it's not as if he hasn't proven himself a dozen times over. If he's feeling poppy, and he is enjoying the work, who are we to party poop?

Although I don't particularly love this design, I really support it. GO BUKO! Sorry if this was annoying. :(

simpsons did it :(

...with less artistic flair and poorer execution.

Without getting into the design itself, which will only not print if Universal Monsters or the Simpsons step in legally to defend their rightful property, I have to comment on this reply. In the real world, it doesn't matter who did it better if the people who did it first have a legitimate copyright claim. Because that's how originality works. Saying "this is done better" is saying Matt Groening sucks and has no right to preserving his own characters and concepts.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, even those who are being critical. It doesn't have to always be "awesome $5!! " comments. Constructive/negative criticism is what helps people grow rather than becoming complacent cause we think all is well just the way it is.

In case you all missed it, every single person that has criticized buko has also stated they love some of his earlier works and have admitted that he's a great artist. And he really is a great artist. Please stop hating on them for being honest in their criticism and missing other sides of his talent.

Sometimes the same ol' can get boring (ie. certain pop references, the neverending mustache jokes, remake or a remake of a remake, etc).

Anyways, I think it's fun... but as some others have stated, not my fav out of your designs.

I'm not gonna get into the debate that's raging on here because there are other places and blogs right now on Threadless to discuss this, so I'll just focus on the design and not the bigger picture here:

Amazing illo as always, very cool visualization of the Simpsons as Frankenstein and his bride, but....I kinda don't see the connection between these two ideas that makes the concept really gel with me and the reason for using pop culture characters. It's the Simpsons, it's monsters....I do like the clever touch of having the nuclear power plant turn into a Translyvanian type castle, but i think the design needs more of that connection to really work on another level for me.

4 for the wonderful visualization though!

WOW quite the debate that's broken out in here...
I don't understand how people can throw "pop culture" designs under one big blanket and basically call them all shit. That's just stupid and wrong. A tshirt design is something that either works or doesn't work...there's no great science to it. You either like it and think it's something you'd wear, or you don't like it and don't think you'd wear it. On occasion you can also think "That's really cool, but I wouldn't wear that". To each his own.
Let's not try to make this into something it's not. It's a tshirt design.
That being said, the artwork on this is OUTSTANDING. Absolutely mind blowing. But, I must admit I don't think the concept holds up as well. It's been done on the Simpsons as other have said. Is it supposed to be a surreal piece? is that why Homer is coming out of the smokestack? I don't really understand the layout of this, but I suppose something had to be done so it wasn't just marge and homer as frank and frank's bride....since it's already been done on the Simpsons....

So...after my giant long winded critique, I'll give this a 3. The artwork is awesome, concept, not the most "original" thing I've ever seen.
Who gives a shit what I say though. It's still gonna print. Congrats Buko for getting people talking.

Well, I just don't see myself wearing this and having to tell people about "oh the concept behind this is, blah blah blah.

I think people will look at it and say:

Wow, duuuude, you gotta a rad shirt!

The whole "what is the concept here" is happening just because people are tired of the ammount of subs doing this. But how many of those shirts are so well executed as this one here?

It was the same with the food with faces and watercolor shirts and the bafocomics shirts, it was everywhere and everyone loved them...

well, forget all the bafocomics-shirts-fever, that never happened, hehehe.

I do not understand people that enter threadless to see original peaces of art. I mean really. I understand that there are very creative, artistic people here especially Buko but get real people, who would sell more t-shirts, the real Mona Lisa or Renaissance Rocks by Buko? I wouldn't like to have the original Mona Lisa in my t-shirt. Even if it was painted directly in my t-shirt by Da Vinci. Dont get me wrong, I am not comparing the talent od Da Vinci with Buko, because I am an art student too, and I value the original more than the remake. But when I want to see original art, I am visiting galleries that suite my taste.

It amazes me how controversial this design has become, just because of its excellent execution and clear talent.
Envy much?

Why are people jumping to assumptions? How do we know buko lazily stole this idea?

His execution is superb and I think the idea is pretty cool, but, there are just soo many Simpsons pop culture references to pick from the litter that I don't want a shirt with them on it unless I REALLY like it

Still, high score for this one, 4 just because the execution is well done

I think Homer could use some 5'o'clock shadow, otherwise I think it's a really great job.
