About my design

So, what I had in mind for a trend for Threadless was a reimagining of old images in the public domain. There is a wealth of fascinating, obscure and downright awesome images from days long gone that would make sweet tee designs and I think it�s something that everyone can do. It doesn�t require any special equipment or skill � just the ability to identify the potential in images that exist in the public domain and be creative with them.

Far from ripping-off the original works, I feel it's a way of paying homage to these works and their artists. The way I see it; if people are reusing and getting inspired from my work in 100 years, I would have done something right.

I like the description more than the piece, hehehe! But I do apprecaite what you are doing here, I like the added touch of the skull and the ironic nature of snake-oil salesmanship in the selling of old-timey cigarettes to an unsuspecting public. Cool idea for the contest.

I feel a bit weird about using others artwork, but I cant deny that this looks awesome on the shirt.

I just hope that in a way it doesnt become a trend here on threadless, and people take it the wrong way and sorta start getting lazy and just putting others work on a shirt.

The irony here is that the only reason you can use this particular piece of art is because something was done quite wrong originally. Its a good tee design though, and a clever use of appropriated work.

I really like the shirt, I would even wear it.

However, I have mixed feelings about making money (which is what you do if it gets printed) on something I did not really create, or contribute to, myself.

But it is a nice shirt.

Did you add the text too? I could see it either way as cigarettes were advertised for all sorts of ridiculous things. Regardless I really...like really want this. I love the color...everything. Money money!

The nature of the original ad compared to public perception of cigarettes today makes the skull, imo, redundant.

I'd wear it without the skull.

I don't know. I wouldn't want to see it becoming a trend that people simply find images and put them on shirts without any additional work and it certainly wouldn't be worth $10000. But I'm all for people remixing public domain images.

I think some kind of manipulation of the image is essential, not only because it represents "work" or "vision" or something but also because otherwise, Threadless could theoretically just bypass your involvement and go to the original and other t-shirt companies could freely rip it off.

In order to "get it" the skull is a bit redundant, but it's also very subtle, a lot of people might not see it anyway so it's a nice Easter egg for people to find.

I would argue that making hundreds of dollars off of someone else's work with minimal if any actual original input from yourself is not only something no one should be OK with, but also already a very profitable trend.

I know there's been a little controversy over this design, but I have no problem with the re-use of stock images as long as it is done well, which this is. I'd wear this, perhaps not on red, but on almost any other colour

Kinda wish it was just the image, without the text -- I'm worried people may not see the skull and get the wrong idea.

But I'd still definitely wear this.
