On what basis would they sue... He's a person not a character and the design is not defaming him...

The guys from Giant Robot Magazine did a "Bruce Lee" shirt and almost got taken to court. The designer who did the shirt told everyone it was his cousin dressed up as Lee for Halloween (aaah which it was) but they still got harassed. It's your cousin right??

Cool illustration but don't like the colors. Red and white on a black shirt, maybe just red and no box.

Nice. I wouldn't worry about being sued. A [Cease and Desist] usually comes first.

If you can put George Bush on a shirt, why not Bruce Lee? If if's an artistic interpretation it should be fair game. There's plenty of Lee shirts....I doubt they're dishing out royalties on them. You can sell a painting of Lee on ebay. Check out this page for some cheese shirts: http://www.irielion.com/irie/bruce_lee_t-shirts.html

Shirt doesn't quite work for me. It has some good things but the box is too restrictive. If you don't feel like going for a red, try something unusual like an olive green with a white image, that will make it a bit less trendspotter adn a bit more trendy. WHich isn't perfect for everyone but would make it appealing.

The artist wouldn't get sued, Threadless would for selling it. It's not illegal to draw his likeness, only to profit from it.
His likeness is how his estate makes money. Using it without permission is the same as someone taking your art and using it for profit without their permission. It impinges on your ability to make money off it. It devalues your portion of its market value.

fade2black, You can use a picture of Bush because he is a public figure and not a copyrighted likeness. W doesn't make money off his likeness, he makes it being a politician. That's the difference.
