New trend - instead of jokes, high-concept designs and fantasy themes artists will become more focused on mundane, slice-of-life vignettes of every-day events that have no obvious concept but speak to the viewer in a subtle and meaningful way.
Some examples: a person getting a haircut, a lonely building in a small town, street-lights turning colour at a deserted intersection, pigeons being fed bread crumbs in a park, and in this case an old man taking a much-needed break from a hard days work in a tobacco field. The underlying philosophy of this new trend? That beauty and wonder can be found everywhere, even in events seemingly ordinary. Are you surprised that this makes a cool tee shirt? I'm not. Thanks for trying to put me out of a job, hehe. I like those things, but i like this too. There's plenty of room for both. |

Nice Idea for 2k10, for that alone a 5! I like your style too, which rounds it up to a 5$! I also found it interesting, that he wasn't taking a smoke break!

Thanks people!
Mountain Gnome - now that you mention it, I originally had the character smoking a cigarette. However I didn't want people to think I was encouraging cigarette smoking so decided it was best to leave it out. Also I changed the character to a wise-looking old man who has obviously reached this age by leading a healthy life. :) Don't know why anyone would assume I support smoking just because I depict it in an illustration but this has happened in the past. Here's the preliminary sketch with man smoking if you wanted to check it out. |

aw about the smokes and how people would have likely perceived it. i bet had you drawn in a little pipe most people would have been cool with that. pipes are somehow nicer.

OK, I'm lame. I just realized none of my hi-res links to my Flickr are working because I had the settings on private. My apologies and here are the new links if anyone cares to check them out:

This is seriously one of my favorite sketches of yours except I like the original guy's head better.

Thanks everyone!
Amy - I might consider re-subbing the original actually because I like the way it looks without any colour and the line-work comes through more. |
