New trend - instead of jokes, high-concept designs and fantasy themes artists will become more focused on mundane, slice-of-life vignettes of every-day events that have no obvious concept but speak to the viewer in a subtle and meaningful way.

Some examples: a person getting a haircut, a lonely building in a small town, street-lights turning colour at a deserted intersection, pigeons being fed bread crumbs in a park, and in this case an old man taking a much-needed break from a hard days work in a tobacco field.

The underlying philosophy of this new trend? That beauty and wonder can be found everywhere, even in events seemingly ordinary. Are you surprised that this makes a cool tee shirt? I'm not.

Simulated process on simple, basic sand.

Nice Idea for 2k10, for that alone a 5! I like your style too, which rounds it up to a 5$! I also found it interesting, that he wasn't taking a smoke break!
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Jan 10 '10
Thanks people!

Mountain Gnome - now that you mention it, I originally had the character smoking a cigarette. However I didn't want people to think I was encouraging cigarette smoking so decided it was best to leave it out. Also I changed the character to a wise-looking old man who has obviously reached this age by leading a healthy life. :)

Don't know why anyone would assume I support smoking just because I depict it in an illustration but this has happened in the past. Here's the preliminary sketch with man smoking if you wanted to check it out.

   ginetteginette on Jan 10 '10
aw about the smokes and how people would have likely perceived it. i bet had you drawn in a little pipe most people would have been cool with that. pipes are somehow nicer.
Mountain Gnome
Mountain Gnome on Jan 10 '10
igotocairo, it was just that i thought it interesting that a man working in a tobacco field would not be smoking!

I certainly do understand your reluctance to include a smoking cigarette in your design, as I am sure that it would possibly offend some... (not me though).

A great tee, Good luck!
igo2cairo
   igo2cairo on Jan 10 '10
gg - yeah, a little pipe would have been cool, I should have done that! Maybe I'll try to add one.

It's true that they are perceived as being more benign even though they can cause mouth cancer etc. I guess it's because people that smoke pipes usually only do it as an occasional thing, like cigar-smoking (which I sometimes indulge in) and it can be more of a hobby instead of just an addiction.

MG - thanks dude! :)

Amy - I might consider re-subbing the original actually because I like the way it looks without any colour and the line-work comes through more.
