It's cliché, but the clichés are classic. I like it.

i like it. bold graphic will always rokk in my book.

don't mean to be square, but how were you able to sell the design on your other site? were you able to get th permission from threadless? maybe i 'm not underrstanding their legal terms, but i thought it said that they retained EXCLUSIVE tee shirt printing rights to any submitted design.
ill
ill on Jul 19 '04
that are all my designs ans my rights... i dont understand the problem? wahts wrong?
powkitty
powkitty on Jul 19 '04
i'm not saying that there IS a problem...

i was just asking how that worked.

the other design you have on here, with the dripping bitmap skull, you also have on your site where you sell stuff.

i just thought that one of the legal terms for submitting work was that Threadless.com got the exclusive rights to the design for the use of printing on tee shirts.

do you get what i'm saying? i'm not criticizing at all. i 'm just asking you because i wan't sure.

under their submission agreement you retain ownership of the artwork, but you agree to give them exclusive rights to use of your design for the purpose of printing it on shirts. in other words, you no longer have the right to license that design to another for the specific use of printing on shirts.

at least that's my understanding of the agreement.

maybe someone with a better understanding of the legal terms could help me explain it. i could be totally wrong and freaking you out for no reason. in which case, i sincerely apologize.

overall my concern was that since you sell your designs on your own site it would suck if you lost printing rights to your own work, by submitting it here.

powkitty .... threadless never printed the design he submitted. He can run his own prints if he feels like. I do believe in the TOS though if threadless does run your design you aren't allowed to sell it as well.
powkitty
powkitty on Jul 19 '04
cocorobot... i see what you're saying, but the agreement doesn't stipulate that you agree to the terms only if the submission IS selected and printed. it just says:

"Threadless.com retains exclusive rights to the submitted design for tee shirt printing. Threadless.com also retains rights to the design for use on the Threadless.com website, and any Threadless.com promotional material.

The participant will keep ownership of the submitted design. The participant may display or archive the design in a portfolio or personal collection but may not sell or reproduce the design for commercial purposes without written permission from Threadless.com. "

my understanding of what that says is that Threadless.com retains the exclusive rights "fo tee shirt printing" whether they use them or not.

BUT i'm not a lawyer so i could be ( and often am) completely wrong.

Are you positive they only retain those rights if your submission is used and printed?

i'm not trying to start shit, im just looking out for my fellow artists rights to protect the work they create.

i like the i ** you one more than the i ** pop. and i like the crossbones. i think less of an angle would be good, but you need it to be a little askew. i really like how the letters are distressed. high quality.

"i cross-eyed-skull-and-cross-bones pop"

no thanks. i'm over the faux-punk look. in fact, it was never cool. ever.

defenda on Jul 19 '04
Who hates/skulls pop anyway? That would include out both the Beach Boys and the Beatles... so not my cup of tea. How about someone come up with "I love/heart pop" instead, and add a disclaimer regarding the pop's requisite quality .

It looks very Justin Timberlake, ironically.

I'm a lawyer, and so I might be, and often am, wrong, but although there's nothing to say that if Threadless doesn't buy the shirt you're allowed to sell it, it would be fine (where I live, anyway, the US might be different), because Threadless hasn't given you any consideration (as in money or value = prize) for you agreeing to those terms, so no contract.

Not too sure what would happen with you selling a shirt while it was being judged, and then you won some $.

Does anyone care?

I think if you had the i (skull) you

i (skull)me design as a shirt submission, i would vote higher for it then i did this one.

i think the concept can be pushed further... like using less expected words than [pop, you, me, rock, society]. maybe use words like [surrealism, cellphones, involvement, community, blogs, mochas] i'm kind of ripping on yuppie-ness but you get what i mean. do something different, cherry coke.

also i agree wholeheartedly with the "skew less, center more" comments. but overall, i really like the type treatment and the skull itself rocks. i'd also stray away from the off-white shirt. it really tones down the voice of the image. like "i skull fill-in-the-blank. But I like pastels."

thanx for tips!

i think the shirt must bewith or black, becouse the skull musst be red like the heart!

did you mean for this to be so ironic, saying you hate pop and simultaneously creating a very mtv/mainstream-looking pop design? if so, then you get my kudos for cleverness, if not no big deal. you should try to sell this design to hot topic, they sell a lot of under-designed anti-pop skull-themed shirts.

Ill: you have a personality disorder. You should stop designing if your hate still overwhelms you. You'll just come up with non worthy stuff like that which will destroy the world of design. Even punk designs get recognition. Inturn fame.
