The New Art/New Ideas challenge was something I needed to shake me out of my complacency. It was a good chance to ditch the comfort of my digital world and to think outside the proverbial square in conceptualizing ideas into images.
I wanted to create something that wasn’t just 2 dimensional. A design that could not only be printed on a t-shirt and as a poster/print, but that could be re-created by anyone using the same materials. Each time the idea is present even though the image differs slightly depending on the participant’s interpretation, style, and materials used.
Having said that, my design isn’t at all void of a little digital manipulation here and there, although these little 'computer tricks' serve to make the image more aesthetically pleasing for consumption as a fashion item, and not to add anything to the meaning or idea behind the art itself.
Part of the prize for the New Art/New Ideas Challenge is to have your design showcased in The New Museum Store. If chosen, I’d like to re-create this design from scratch at the launch party with audience participation.
