When I saw the Pre-loved comp I wanted to think of a solid but witty take on the subject. So I made a list of things I thought people would love and discard no matter how long one had loved this thing for. Some were pretty funny but in the end I needed it to be more “G” rated while taking my best shot at originality. So the list grew and then dwindled with my mind ending up focused to the subject of GUM….and how much I was in love with the current piece I was chewing. But how one could love this piece of gum again once I have discarded it?? And I had it…….the Gum stuck on something with a naive young kid picking it off as if he has found a gold mine of this seemingly still tasty treats!!! The main negative space light blue will be a discharge print to keep the ink weight down…with the rest of the colors done with 7 colors of the usual suspects (oversized of course). If necessary the main negative space can be belt printed with the boy, gum and center post being printed on second since I designed it so one could not tell if the registration of the light blue discharge belt print and 2nd colors did not quite line up. Either way it should come out looking awesome.

I also tried mixing different techniques and mediums into composing this design by using my 3D modeling skills for the chair and table....Photoshop…illustrator….good old pen and paper…..and custom photography for everything else to get unique textures for the gum and overalls (special thanks to my friends kid for being such a good sport in those overalls). And yes…the gum pieces are all unique….and yes….they took forever cutting all those little B@%T*RD$ out ….

hahaha, this is grossly endearing and i love the placement near your mouth as well of all those still-chewable treats! The chair could maybe use a bit more rendering or just not be there at all, or even an adult sitting on the chair and just seeing their feet which would explain why the child was there by himself. Nice work!

Thanks for all the great comments!!! FA I did play around to have something/someone on the chair in one version but it became too overwhelming for my focal point so I took it out so the colors could pop more on the kid and the gum and let the rest be very subtle since I knew with the discharge you would almost not even see the negative space on the final product.

it seems to me that your image is not quite resolved in terms of its aesthetic. parts of it are kinda realistic and parts of it are kinda cartoony and it's not really coming together for me. funny idea though

I sort of like the juxtposition of the media used, but i agree with lummieb that it doesn't really seem to come together. Maybe if the table and chair were less... stylized I guess you could say. I love that the table curves around the collar in the template, it complements it nicely. And play around with the chair some more, it feels kind of side heavy to me. Regardless, I would totally wear this, and i can understand the sentiment, having a 1 year old of my own.

I can understand some of Lummibs comments for sure but in the end I was going for pop/worhal inspired execution hence the color and reality with a twist. I try to mix it up ...have fun...and try new things every design I do instead of traveling down the cookie cutter path of screen printing time and time again.
