umm, can you explain why this look almost exact like the core design for the crest of canada? There is a few key differences but the characters, positioning and design is there (http://www.forces.org/evidence/images/crest.gif).

Looks to me like 'someone' redrew and editted it and put the word threadless over it. if that's true, i'd say this is a rip-and-a-half. hail canada?

good concept but i could make a better one by taking the american flag and writting america on it, it would make more sense. can you explain: crest/threadless?

amazing crest. I would epresent threadless with this shirt.
vwoop
   vwoop on Jul 04 '04
agree-- definitely the first nice design with "threadless" on it
--- shame about callmeMooCow's comment, i can definitely see how people might get upset about it
but this is so well-done, your skill is fantastic, that i'm not in the least upset about you using canada's crest as a guide-- you changed it around a lot, edited out many things... learning how to draw something has to start somewhere. i think you did a great job, the end result (your design) doesnt look like what you (might have probably) started with.
---also, threadless might be refering to the thread for machines like bolts and screws and plastic screw tops and things. but, yah this is supe anyway.

i saw the canadian crest link. the basic structure for most english and commonwealth crests all usually the same. before this link i have never seen the crest of canada before as i used a combination of various crests from the U.K. and australia(where i'm, from). it is more likely that canada under the british commonwealth adopted similar designs in their crests because of their english heritage. try looking through some english crests and you'll see what i mean. instead of just linking an image which is similar to most english crests. the main reference for the animals was actually from the duke of norfolk's crest. although in most crests an equine, a feline, or bird-like figure will appear. thanks for the comment anyway. i just wanted to make a good looking design for the people of threadless. (ps. zoom in on the shield detail, tell me if you've seen a crest like this before.)
discordia
discordia on Jul 04 '04
callmeMooCow and someguy, you tools! if this was a rip, why doesn't the drawing style and all the flags, and flowers look all the same? you can tell this is actually drawn not just traced bitmapped. this is definitely a different design, it just has the feel of an old english crest probably because he wants to have an established community feel that threadless has. this shirt is great and i'd buy green. x5

Why do people feel the need to not use the templates when they present their designs? The design guidelines are VERY SPECIFIC about how you ae supposed to use their templates.

I like the idea of a stitched threadless, but except for the little bit on the inside this is WAY too close to a Canadian crest. Make the crest a little more original and you've got a winner.

personally i don't think this is too close to the canadian crest, but that shouldn't really matter. what should matter is if this is a good design, if you'd buy and wear it. and i know i definitely would. so stop the bitchin. this shirt would be cool if printed and it would definitely be a deserving winner. x5

Nice design but it seems kind of shameless. I am sure Threadless can find someone to design their promotional tees for them.
geetarus
geetarus on Jul 15 '04
shameless? why would threadless find others to design their tees for them. that would defeat the whole purpose for promoting the threadless community site in the first place. this design is great, because it has succeeded where no other like it has. i would be very proud to wear this shirt if it gets printed. so please print it for everyone.

look this is a great shirt, I'd wear it. But it's NOT a great concept people have been drawing crests like this for hundreds of years.. and by hand. Aside from this how many designers have been using crests in their work over the last two years or so... hmmm every other one including me.

I should have known that a design that incorporated the Threadless name was going to be chosen to win the big bucks.

What bullshit.
Cubfan
Cubfan on Aug 31 '04
Uh... I don't get it. Its just a crest with 'Threadless' written across it. I can appreciate the little details, and the fact that the design is well done... but its just so generic. This design doesn't seem at all representative of the creativity and originality pervasive in the shirts and submissions I see here. Its just a damn crest, with the word threadless... I can buy something similar at American Eagle. Maybe this is an attempt to sell more accessible designs? Maybe get another feature in 'Cargo'?
ism
ism on Aug 31 '04
I should have known, first it's "Cargo" now this. It's one thing to have it printed and another for it to be the $2,500 winner. What a crock of s***. You suck Threadless. It looks like any other tee you can buy at the conformity stores, i.e. american eagle. Not only do you have to buy the shirt, you're a walking advertisement. Come on people, just look at all the other scored tees, I know there has to be better designs out there then this one. Whats next? Threadless selling their tees to Abercromie. Shame on you Threadless.

the above 2 commenters obviously haven't zoomed in on it, or just plain don't understand the meaning behind the shirt. whatever.
RespectToBurn
RespectToBurn on Sep 01 '04
I've zoomed in, I've seen the detail, I understand the shirt, I'm not impressed one bit!

I don't know whos worse, KIDZ for designing it with threadless written on it, or threadless for picking it for shameless self promotion!

I think threadless have lost it with that one, it looks like something you would buy from a cheapy crap shop for a fiver!

Sorry but that's terrible, is there any way you can withdraw my submissions from this site?

As from now I will continue with my own label, threadless have finally been taken over by commercialism. I come on here because you get a lot of stuff that you wouldn't be able to get in shops full of over commercialised tack. It seems that threadless is heading that way now.

I could go to my local town or city and see a thousand t-shirts exactly like that one and pay nothing more than £5.

Absolutely diabolical! And the worst thing is, all the prizes he's got for it!

Whats the point of creativity on threadless if shirts are going to be picked that are so generic and ubiquitous?

Fuck threadless, they aren't getting anything from me in the way of design work, and now I won't be purchasing my winter wardrobe from them. I had so many t-shirts lined up but no way now! I'm sure there are many people out there who feel the same!

Although not as strongly as RespectToBurn, I do agree with many of the 'disgruntled' users about this design. Without trying to sound too much like a sore-loser (JC was a Streaker is getting printed btw) I believe KIDZ is capable of far greater work than this (see 'PIST', 'This is not a sheep', and 'Keysor Sose' just to name a few)

Again, I do understand the 'concept' behind the design, I just don't think it a strong enough 'concept' or 'image/design' to warrant the grand prize. Although this design scored the highest average for the month of june-july, my money was on akafab's 'elastic-band gun' to win.

Which brings me to my final point, ...everyone should remember that the panel of judges responsible for choosing the winner did not just consist of the people behind threadless. I believe there was a judge representing each sponsor, hence blaming threadless for picking this shirt seems rather unfair.

All that said and done, congratulations KIDZ, although my money was on akafab, at least a fellow aussie took out the grand prize... ozi! ozi! ozi! .....oi! oi! oi!

Do they have 'disposable fashion' shops like Topman, Burton, H+M, and Next in America?

Obviousley not if people think tees like this are so cool!

I see tees like this everyday. This is the sort of t-shirt that made me experiment making and selling my own t-shirts and submitting to threadless, because I was sick of seeing them. I thought threadless was a good idea until I saw this diabolical display!
Dallu
Dallu on Sep 02 '04
I respect the sentiments of RespectToBurn. There are similar crests everywhere in the world...some with tigers, some with elephants, lions, birds, crossed swords and so on...the design, sorry is not original...the ones who like it may not be exposed to all those logos...(like every indian principality had).
The concept is sort of summerising the stuff that is displayed at threadless...somehow not representing the community as committed designers. If it is a satire on threadless, then the message is clear.
Congrats!!!
I liked many of KID Z's submissions....the "cherub" in particular...keep up the good work...

threadless self promotion, somehow that's the worst kind of all!

Major labels rely on branding, threadless relies on design as it's anti branding clothing, for this to win makes no sense.

Design is nice but is very DONE and OVER-DONE in the UK by very bad shops indeed.
