Thanks for your answer. The choice of music makes it even better. One comment though: you have a beautiful rough treatment for the typewriter, But the music sheet is not treated in the same way. the page is very clean and it's shape very accurate - I'm not sure it connects perfectly with the rest of the illu.

Even if there was a viable source to your "amazing" photoshop, there are a lot of differences here:
~This is drawn, and obviously so ~Outside of the concept, it is wholly different stylistically (which is to say, your brand of pianowriter would be manufactured by totally different guys, since they don't look alike) ~It has never been a shirt. This doesn't even take into account the fact that there's no proof your presumed "original" existed before today. This is printing. Sorry. |

I can think of no polite way to say this. I am convinced that you took this design from the Binary Dolls (Nick Jaina now on Hush Records Portland Oregon) album cover that I designed back in 2005. The concept, the era of typewriter and even the angle of the machine relative to the viewer is unmistakeably similar to what I drew in pencil back in December five years ago. Get your own ideas buddy. If you still want to claim this as yours I'd like to hear your response.

The original art work that Leyen has taken from is the album cover for "Too Much Thinking Sinks Ships" by Binary Dolls. It was released in 2005 on Perilymph Records in Portland Oregon. The album is still available on cdbaby. Matt, I am the original creator of this content and I want you to stop using it.

If you have copyright issues you need to take them up with threadless as they own the design now. People come up with the same ideas all the time, that is just life, i think ur gonna have a hard time proving he stole this idea from you. |

It is both detrimental to the expansion of my own creativity and shows a complete lack of respect to the original content creator as well as other artists / designers in general. There is no denying that the concept is the same and I wouldn't attempt to do so, however, the art is on an album I've never seen nor heard of, by a band I've never heard of, on a label I've never heard of. In brief, I've never seen your work, did not take the idea from you and, quite frankly, resent the accusation. I always try to do the appropriate searching before posting a design to avoid unknowingly ripping someone off as you so claim and did so before posting this one as well. I came up with that design in the winter of 2004 after a series of phone calls and emails with my friend Nick Jaina discussing the tone and feel he wanted to achieve for his album. It was printed and distributed early in 2005. You claim to have come up with it 5 years later, using the same composition, era of typewriter and concept, and then proceeded to sell it all over the web. I googled your name and it turns out "the composition" and "it's a trap" are what you are best known for. So yes, I do feel wronged because I came up with it first and now you are making money of off it and using it to build your reputation. This is not a knee jerk reaction. It's a gut reaction that hasn't left me since I discovered the image about 6 weeks ago. I have thought a good deal about it. I've shown the images to several people and they all agree with my conclusion. Also I've looked through your other work and I can see no common thread between what else you've done and this. It looks like you just found an image of an antique typewriter and traced it out in illustrator then threw in a keyboard. That said, it looks nice, but I just don't believe you came up with it. Also how embarrassing would it be for you to admit that one of your two best received designs isn't even yours, while the other is just capitalizing on a trendy web meme? I didn't think you would, and your response, while pleasant is unconvincing. I can see how if by some incredible coincidence you happen to have come up with the same idea, in the same way, from the same angle, you would resent this. At best, all I could think of is that you saw it once and it registered in your unconscious and now you genuinely believe it's yours. If that's the case, I feel kinda bad for you, but it doesn't make it right. One more thing- you claim to do your research before posting designs so as to avoid this kind of thing. Is that because you borrow so heavily from pop culture that you don't trust the authenticity of your own imagination? I personally don't have to search to make sure I'm not copying anyone because it's not a habit of mine in the first place. You probably would have seen my design if you'd actually searched. |

Your only other post on this forum makes reference to the other guy who also tried to use my concept. It makes you look biased. This is not your fight. I'm not out to get money. I just don't like it when people copy other peoples stuff without permission or recognition. The look is different because Matt didn't draw it while I did. |

And how do you know he didn't draw it? This may not be my fight but I have a right to an opinion and in my opinion I don't think he copied you at all. I google my ideas too to see if they've already been done - everyone does that. People can come up with the same idea it happens all the time. I can see why you would think you have a case but I don't agree. Good luck to you. |
