Is the guy on the right George W?

Illustration is awesome, of course it looks better on green (I don't like the square arround the other one) and you should loose the text, it's not needed at all.

Great work!

It wasn't meant to be George W but it does kinda resemble him.

Yes that was my inspiration among other soviet designs, Ive been looking at a lot of different propaganda art from the 40's lately but, I made the lines and the color a lot softer.

i love the original poster, but making such a clear copy of it is a little cheap.
utteranomaly
utteranomaly on Apr 06 '09
looks great, but yeah, it's a little too close of a copy of the soviet propaganda poster.

i think if you were forthright with borrowing from that propaganda poster, giving credit to the poster artist for the initial design, i would give you benefit of the doubt instead of "meh"

it was a pretty nice idea though

I like it, looks like communist design, which is cool!
mbolton2k9
mbolton2k9 on Apr 06 '09
calling it a copy is a little harsh. she clearly re-illustrated it. i personally think it's very strong and a good use of a very iconic historical piece. there's plenty of artists that have borrowed ideas.

in terms of it being cheap. this isn't clip art, this isn't a feigned attempt at creativity. if you don't like the idea, that's fine, but the illustration is, as far as i can tell, an original piece based on a existing piece.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PIECE!!!

hope you win!
freakazoid3000
freakazoid3000 on Apr 06 '09
would anybody know who the original poster is by? i mean, it was probably made by some pencil-pusing russian illustrator back in WW2 that never got credit in the first place!

great idea. i don't know if it was intentional, but i like the juxtaposition of a militant propaganda poster being used for good. ;)

"Um, it looks like a photoshop filter to me."

wow, I had no idea a twist on a well-known poster would have this kind of reaction, and if you look at the posters side by side you would see the pathing is completely different and clearly could not be achieved by a simple photoshop filter.

lukebouris
lukebouris on Apr 07 '09
Actually, I think about 90% of the shirts on this website are completely plagiarized...either from original artists or other artists on the site...
mbolton2k9
mbolton2k9 on Apr 07 '09
lukebouris:

http://diegobarnes.wordpress.com/page/2/

this isn't a recent piece, and as far as i can find, there's no artist given explicit credit for it. there's at least 15 people on this website alone who have used other propaganda posters as a jumping off point for their shirt designs. try doing some research before making inflammatory comments.
stinkyfishface
stinkyfishface on Apr 07 '09
hahaha. this is a great idea!!! it might look kind of cool if it were "worn" a little, like it's been wased a few hundred times!

people need to lighten up!

spacechicken on Apr 07 '09
not that i'm trying to call anyone else out but...

http://www.threadless.com/product/543/This_is_not_a_Pipe#zoom

this is "plagiarizing" two very famous, well publicized pieces... Mario Bros (obviously) and the text borrowed right from Rene Margritte's painting, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe"
thepants
thepants on Apr 07 '09
spacechicken, Ceci n'est pas une pipe is a play on art and pop culture, that's not plagiarizing.

this however is tracing someone else's work and while she added style to it by re-doing it...she still copied straight off of another piece. uncool.

zero.
spacechicken
spacechicken on Apr 07 '09
and the mario pipe and piranha flower isn't?

i'm fairly certain the text from the rene margitte painting is right from/traced from the original text too.

i'm not saying that little g's shirt isn't a clever play on pop-culture, but how is one play on popular art (which clearly has re-produced artwork), different from another (which also has clearly re-produced artwork). you people are too harsh.

beesneak
   beesneak on Apr 07 '09
I think the difference here is that the mario shirt is more of a montage style of taking two elements and putting them together. Especially since the the pipe and flower in itself is not really an art piece, nor the text 'ceci n'est pas une pipe". Whereas in this case, the strongest element is the actual illustration and composition of the piece.
spud_man
spud_man on Apr 07 '09
it doesn't matter what you consider "art". the mario bros. graphic element is from a copy-written source, and the text "ceci n'est pas une pipe" is from a copy-written source. show me who owns the copyright to the propaganda poster?

if it's a simple matter of the idea not being original enough for your tastes, that's fine. don't call it plagiarism if she's not claiming to have created the idea from scratch without any reference.
snegoratchka
snegoratchka on Apr 07 '09
oh geez. It isn't plagiarism. It's satire. If you don't like it, fine- if you think its unoriginal, fine. But plagiarism is a serious charge, and you really ought to at least have some idea of what the law is before you go lobbing it about like a fun new ball.

Personally, I like the idea of this satire. The boxiness on the one on the right bothers me, even though it is a meant to recall the idea of a poster, but, in general, I like it.
utteranomaly
utteranomaly on Apr 07 '09
yeah, i definitely wouldn't go as far as say it's plagiarism.

let me backtrack and say that i initially really liked this design and thought it was an original and great idea. but when i saw the propaganda poster link, i then felt a little cheated for thinking it was totally original. but you know, at worst, i would only call this unoriginal, not plagiarism.

i still think you did a great job recreating the poster into something very cool and relevant to the contest. keep up the good work! (and yes, it's obviously NOT a photoshop filter)
lukebouris
lukebouris on Apr 07 '09
plagiarism |ˈplājəˌrizəm|

noun

the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.

This was traced...identical to the link posted besides the flowers. You can still see the handle in the woman's hand and the shadow from the hammer in the guy's. Not say it is not a nice twist on the design, but you should have changed it up a bit more...

jamesman82 on Apr 07 '09
par⋅o⋅dy   /ˈpærədi/dee]

–noun 1. A HUMOROUS OR SATIRICAL IMITATION of a serious piece of literature or writing: his hilarious parody of Hamlet's soliloquy.

4. any humorous, satirical, or burlesque imitation, as of a person, event, etc.

–verb (used with object) 7. to imitate (a composition, author, etc.) for purposes of ridicule or satire.

lukebouris, you must have better things to do with your time than repeatedly post about something that you've not mentioned once, but three times!

at no point did lacers ever try and pass the original piece off as her own. she was completely up-front when asked if the original poster was her inspiration and source.

i agree with snegoratchka. you should at least be able to READ THE DEFINITION YOU SUPPLIED and understand the situation completely before making a claim like that.

why don't you avoid inflamatory remarks and instead try and CONSTRUCTIVELY CRITIQUE the piece.

wow after reading all the comments i have no idea what to say. when i first saw it i thought wow this is very neat but as soon as i saw the original poster you drew your"inspiration" from it just kind of killed it for me.

"recycle or else!!"? i'm sorry MeanJason, but that's pretty bad.

at least "viva verde" kind of reminds me of commies - commie cubans at least (you know, viva la revoluccion and all that).

i don't care that the source art is represented here almost in its entirety; i think the play on the original poster is hilarious.

GOOD WORK!

It's great to take one of the most dictatorial, cruel and murderous governments of all time and flippantly use it for a green agenda. FAIL. Artwork and placement are great though.
freakazoid3000
freakazoid3000 on Apr 10 '09
i think the nazis have a fairly large lead in the "cruel, murderous dictatorship" category.

odfox, i hope your comment is in some way suppose to be sarcastically funny.
odfox
odfox on Apr 10 '09
Freakazoid3000:

"One of." Hit wikipedia up for "gulag" and read about the reasons one could be placed there, and the admitted record of those killed versus the theorized.

I personally think trying to tie propaganda from that government, or from the nazis, to a positive message is sickening, and displays and utter disrespect for or ignorance of recent history. Just my personal opinion though, everyone is allowed to have one and write about it.

I don't think it looks like a filter. I think you clearly re-illustrated this. But it might be better if it were drawn a little differently. Only because there are so many blatant knock-offs on this site, you want to make it clear that yours is an allusion that you want people to realize, not a rip-off you're trying to get past people.
