About my design

I actually really like the impact of the blood and her hood.

I'm guessing the images are stolen, but I don't really think there's much way of avoiding that for this idea, and they're well combined.

Isn't this just a less subtle version of Red/?

silverge needs to get off her high horse.

The whole history of Western art is nothing but a story of old concepts being expressed in creative and contemporary ways.

Original concept or not, though, "Red" is expressed in a manner that is neither creative nor contemporary. Rather, it looks like a boring old piece of excessively pretentious bourgeois living room kitsch. By contrast, unoriginal concept or not, this design is at once bold, contemporary, and refreshing.

Thus, while one design may suit your subjective tastes more than the other--and there is nothing wrong with preferring old styles--there is no justifiable reason to cry foul at the expression of a used concept in a new style.

regardless of Phoenix's "nothing new under the sun" soliloquy (which has always seemed a weak excuse to me), I just can't justify scoring this well with one incredibly executed RRH concept as a bestee winner last year, and another similar concept but different execution being printed Monday. It's a pretty specific concept to print thrice in 12 months, no?

lol @ ph03n1x. Someone has their self-righteous pants on today. I didn't "CRY FOUL" at this "expression of a used concept in a new style," all I said was, I believe: "this is a less subtle version of Red."

And I really don't think there's any way you could argue with me about that. It doesn't mean this sub is bad, it just means that it's been done, and printed (twice) before at Threadless.

Sheesh.

i totally would have said what silverge had if they hadn't already said it. also that isn't saying this design is worthless or awful or anything.

also lol @ Red being called uncreative, not contemporary and pretentious. come on...

Phoneix. Gosh, I had no idea that Threadless awarded Bestee of the year to uncreative and boring designs. I think my next project will be of a grey circle. I COULD WIN 20,000 Dollars!!!

Professor - I tend to agree with the majority. The idea has been done. Not saying that this design is bad though.

hi fellows,

first of all thank you for your nice words ;)

So relax fellows, we are not saving the world here, this is a platform that people share what they do and have fun with other people's work! isn't it? i can't understand why r u so excited? i think it is the money ;))

cool it man, this design is not going to be printed and u r not going to see more red riding hoods here ;))

Well, first, the length of my tenure here at Threadless, or lack thereof, says absolutely nothing about my knowledge and understanding of design theory, aesthetic theory, aesthetic philosophy, art history, or art criticism. In other words, it says nothing about my ability to assess a design, and, if need be, defend it against criticism.

Second, the fact that Red won design of the year doesn't mean all that much either. Designs are selected here on Threadless based on the whimsical tastes of its active community in aggregate, those of its veteran designers, those of its staff, and, not least, on what will sell and, as is likely in this case, what has sold. Designs are not selected, in other words, based on quasi-objective aesthetic principles, therefore Red's status as design of the year can only be utilized so far in its defense.

My point, however, wasn't that Red is a bad design. Indeed, I'm willing to give it credit where credit is due: the humor of the design, as silverge mentioned, is tastefully subtle. Subtle doesn't, however, mean better--although you may prefer subtlety as a matter of subjective taste. Subtle or blatant, what matters how well one or the other is executed.

In addition, a large part Red's subtle humor comes not only from the idea of a gun-wielding Red Riding Hood, as it does in this design, but also from the ironic contrast between the subject matter and the aesthetic style: we don't normally think of Red Riding Hood as being a sexy young Nabokov-esque female assassin. That the artist thought to amalgamate the two, then, is an example of creativity. Thus, although the design appears to be kitsch, in fact it is not. Rather, it is a postmodern pastiche.

My point, rather, was merely that, in addition to originality of concept, there is also originality of style: the concept of this design was implicitly criticized for being unoriginal, so I pointed out that the same could be said of Red's style in attempt to nullify the criticism.

Third, whether or not "nothing under the sun" is a "weak excuse" depends upon the concept and/or style it's being utilized to defend. In other words, instead of making generalizations, we should decide (and debate) on a case-by-case basis whether or not the reuse of an existing concept or style is justified.

Next, in light of my original comment, I did find it quite funny when I woke up this morning to find that a second Red Riding Hood design had been selected for print. Given that Threadless only selects relatively few designs for print per year and consequently offers only so many designs at a given time, it stands to reason that they would want to give other appealing concepts due representation in their catalog. Thus, the chances that this design will be printed have now dropped considerably--and not without justification.

At the same time, we must keep in mind that our votes are only used as one measure of a design's viability; the Threadless staff has the final say on what does an does not get printed. Therefore, we should rate this design based on its own merits or lack thereof and leave it up to the Threadless staff to decide whether or not it merits printing should it receive a high score.

In addition, as various printed-design scores seem to indicate, a design with a relatively low score can still get printed as long as a sufficient number of people mark it as something that they would buy. Thus, scoring this design low in attempt to keep it off of the shelves is, by and large, an exercise in futility anyhow.

Finally, silverge: your original comment was unarguably intended as a criticism. First, you did not follow your statement up with any positive comments, as I did when I made a similar statement about another design in the running. Second, the word just is used as a diminutive in "isn't this just a less subtle version of Red?" Third, the inclusion of the phrase "less subtle"--in lieu of, say, "another"--implies that you disapprove of the lack of subtlety. Last, and most importantly, though, you quite simply would have had no reason to leave the comment in the first place--to introduce the proverbial elephant in the room--had you not intended it as a criticism.

You are entitled to your opinion and you are entitled to disagree with me, but don't express that opinion openly and then pretend like you didn't intend it as taken. Instead, stand by that opinion and, if you feel it's worth your while--and you very well may not--defend that opinion. Indeed, there is no point in expressing your opinion if you're merely going to shy away from it.

wow, a book. Maybe you should write a blog about it.

with that all said, i wish the blood was more similar looking to the rest of the design. thats my only qualm with it.

There are a lot of words here....I'm just gonna crit the design instead of adding to the heated text discussion over art because art sucks.

I am not a huge fan of Red being, like, a 6 year old gun-wielding murderess. Not do I like the look of the raster photo collage just being stuck on the tee- more of an environment could have helped tone down the harsh edges. Speaking of hard edges, black & red on white feels like a boring color scheme to me. And I think the placement of the wolf is too...um...nipple to nipple. But, professor, you clearly have skill and the winning potential so just keep truckin'. 3

I am now very nervous that my first submission includes a red riding hood design similar in content to this one. As a new submitter I did not realize there were some many on this theme. Oh well. If my image gets in and sparks this much discussion I'll be pleased.
