About my design

by zeropluslessthan
OK, so politics is messy and partisan, but some faces deserve to be iconic. It's happened, bizarrely, to Che Guevara, so why not George 'Dubloons' Dubya?

If you're a supporter, then he's a loveable rascal of a pirate. If you're not a Bush fan, then he's a villainous buccaneer of the black gold. Either way, everyone's number one C student has changed the world.

Four colours on black.

I'm tired of the "Hate Bush" fad. Move on, he isn't the president. You get a "0" for this one.

EccentricSage on Feb 09 '09
Pft. I hated Bush before it was popular. I'd rather not see his face every day, thanks.

Good one, Sage...

To both of you, I'd not underestimate the value of protest in its demand for accountability. This is meant to be a somewhat light-hearted reminder that misbehaving leadership is subject to the will (and censure) of the people, and that future leadership (hopefully) is not going to find us as open to manipulation as in the past.

Forgetting Bush is understandable, but it's much like forgetting the Exxon Valdez or Chernobyl. We can become more or less human by our mistakes, and I for one think that it is worth engaging with serious stuff and growing through the experience.

The last eight years have demonstrated just how radically a few votes in Florida changed the world landscape. That's not worth thinking about because Bush is not president anymore?

Yeesh, savedchristian, you've scored 1600 submissions and given an average score of 0.15??!! So getting a zero from you would mean that I'm actually one of your highest scoring submissions! I'm flattered. Thanks!

Sorry if you don't approve, I score based on what I would wear. And I'm pretty picky about what I would wear. But I'm certainly not going to wear a shirt with Bush's face on it...or any other politcian's face for that matter.
gumbolimbo
   gumbolimbo on Feb 11 '09
no way I'd wear bush (or any politicians head) on my shirt.

And if I ever vent policital stuff out on my tee, it has to be damn funny, very subltle, or very good looking, preferrably all three.
zeropluslessthan
zeropluslessthan on Feb 11 '09
I thought of making some kind of 'burning bush' reference... There were possibilities there, but I couldn't crack it.

SavedChristian... you should be wearing what? Let's see...

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."

Have you been waiting for one of those to come around?

I think you should be scoring people on merit. It's not a 'yes/no' scoring scale, so you can't blame pickiness. You're telling me that in 1600 designs you saw no good at all? Where's the grace and charity?

I'd score something that I'd wear a 4 or a 5. I'd score something with skill and/or decent thinking a 2 or a 3. I'd score abject artlessness or brainless references to genitals a 0. I don't care what you give George Bush. I didn't expect it to be liked. But 1600 zeroes?

bush is old news buddy. you had eight years to do something like this and it passed you by.

dont be bitter betty because were telling you our opinions- you shouldnt have subbed it if you didnt want people to tell you what was what.
zeropluslessthan
zeropluslessthan on Feb 12 '09
What on earth are you talking about, useme? Where did you get the impression that I'm bitter because people don't like my shirt? I think you're getting me all wrong. I said this above:

"I don't care what you give George Bush. I didn't expect it to be liked." ['it' obviously refers to the shirt].

I know that in one sense this shirt is past it's due date, and my only advocacy for this design was to point out one important sense in which Bush can never be out of date (well, depending on how his legacy is viewed in the long term - think how much interest there still is in Nixon and JFK).

Beyond that, I'm taking issue with someone who self-consciously identifies himself as a saved Christian, but has been willing to score 1600 designs '0', regardless of how much thought and labour has gone into them. I don't think that's a good thing for any human being to do, let alone a Christian. Where have I complained about anyone's opinion of my design?

For what it's worth, I would only score my own Bush design with a 2. So I really don't care if there is broad consensus that this is not the time for Bush shirts, or if it gets marked near zero. I'm really not sensitive about it at all. It's the only finished design that I have so far, and I think it's worth putting together a body of work, even if it's not all fantastic. Certainly, having something subject to criticism legitimises one's ability to stand as critic.

Hating Bush was so 2008.

You don't agree with the way I score designs, fair enough. I give a design I would wear a 5$ and a design I wouldn't wear a 0. I come to threadless to buy clothing, nothing more. But I do understand your perspective on a more graded voting method, one concerned more with skill than content. You make a reasonable arguement, something I'll consider as I continue to vote. But attacking my faith isn't the best way to win me over to your point of view.

Even still, I won't change my vote on this shirt because I don't want to buy political shirts.

I'm not attacking your faith, saved, it's my faith too. I thought my Colossians joke was pretty good, actually. It is worth considering that one's faith has an impact even on how one votes at threadless.

"this is why i don't take the left seriously."

I think Frick was probably being facetious, i.e. a humorous way of pointing out that my design is a little too late. The left has a sense of humour. You have to watch out for it.

"too much hating go around."

Yeah, I think that if I'd known quite how seriously everyone would take this kind of thing, I would have left my Bush illustration rotting in my archive, where it clearly belongs.

Plain and the bones don't really match with the face... and I've seen too many Bush shirts in the last few years. :( Sorry. Not original enough.

Aside from the content, which is not a winner here, the art looks confused. There are too many styles not merging smoothly together. Just keep practicing!

Ouchman. 1.14.

Fair comment mezo. I'll certainly keep practicing. This one was something I had on file for years, so I thought I'd submit it for fun. It's taking a while to get my head around the t-shirt format. I'm too used to boring rectangular print work, which was my lot for a long time.

Thanks for voting everybody, and especially for the comments that were of a more helpful nature!!
