I agree the110..unfortunately I've never said photos shouldn't be used on shirts. I've only stated that the payout should be less. Obviously playing with lighting is easier than creating an entire design from scratch. To argue against that would be silly and nonsensical.

ginetteginette on Apr 27 '09 duracell, without falling into a longwinded arguement here... you're wrong. the design world doesn't entirely work payement on an hour by hour basis. just because someone can work out a design problem (making a design for threadless as a 'problem' that needs a 'solution' so-to-speak) faster than someone else doesn't mean their pay should be penalized! if some other designer's method is to work on a threadless design for 100 hours they shouldn't be paid more just because their method is overly time-consuming. that's the designer's own issue.

I wish you guys could just read what i wote instead of arguing against something you think i said or intended. Something halfway finished (take cooking for example) is easier to complete then something thats not finished at all. It's a very simple concept.
Everyone seems to accept the reason why typetees get paid less. You aren't submitting the design, just the idea. With photos you arent submitting a created design either, you are just altering something already created. Therefore we can conclude that photo prints should be paid somewhere in between $500 and $2200. Now if this doesn't happen then don't be surprised if we continue trending towards more and more photo designs. If that is cool with you then cool. :shrug: |

duracell, people have subbed photos before and they don't always look fresh on a tee.
also, it's not just any photo. ir0cko actually snapped and edited that photo. it's an artform in itself, if you know anything about photography. anyway, you're entitled to your opinion of photo-tees getting less payout. you are in the minority thusfar. |

I like the Tee. I wrote a short story called escalation over twenty years ago and that would have made a neat Penguin (one-colour print) cover!
@duracell, you got some guts to say what you have to a site mainly frequented by GenY – the cut/copy generation! Veloso's comparisons to Duchamp are fine but 50 years too late – the context has changed completely. Anybody presenting 'found object' in an art context today needs to go a little further than representing a urinal. Margritte painted, which is your point entirely so be happy with those points too. While there are many excellent GenY illustrators on this site and elsewhere, I know those who are happy to scan illustrations from illustrated novels from the nineteen century (for eg) and slap it on a tee. Hey I'm brilliant ($$ kar-ching). I know of a pattern maker who has 20-somethings coming around with pictures ripped out of fashion mags who say make this but drop the left shoulder 10 cm. They know nothing (it will fall of, dear) about garment construction (let alone fashion) haven't got an original idea to save themselves and have no respect for the pattern maker ("I'll give you $200 once you've done the sample"), their craft or anybody who has actually taken a direction and worked towards some kind of voice or originality (yeah even in fashion there are artists and there are hacks). That's no to say that taking a photo and making a tee is not art worthy or original in every case but almost certainly not as much effort as illustrating a good one. In the case of price, the art market generally rewards notoriety and reputation which is dependant on many factors, originality of voice being only one, effort being another (as opposed 'worth' or 'quality' and canvas size (sq m) is often used to differentiate price of pictures in the a show, even in contemporary art world). @littlem: it was somebody else who made the effective suggestion of removing the "suspenders" so you seem to be suggesting Bio-bot 9000 take a cut and some credit for mastery of the artform, right? Or was it the way irOcko wielded the eraser tool or adjustment mask that counts? By all means keep the conversation going – i think it's instructive for young minds. |
