About my design

by nwromano
If you are associated with graphic design, chances are images like these show up on your screen at least sometimes. "The Gang's All Here" is a compendium of cliche; a guide by which designers should strive beyond.

While these images might seem typical individually, it is rare we see them gathered in one, concentrated area. This shirt strives to destroy cliche by publicly ridiculing it.

Enjoy.

Funny stuff, seen collections on Threadless before of tons o cliches, but it needs to be a bit more cohesive on the tee. Still, you got pretty much all of them covered, except where are my octopi? lol@random squarish vecotr characters, lordie i hate them so much!

what the fucking christ is going on on this shirt. just because you're poking fun at cliche'd things doesn't mean this in itself isn't a cliche'd design.

none of the elements work together, they all look as if they were created by different people, no cohesion whatsoever.

i mean like, nice going on spotting all the shit people tend to overuse but you haven't done anything incredible with it at all. it's pretty awful to look at actually.

I agree with ginette.

I like the concept ;)

Tara-Rara is completely right. That rude comment was not neccessary by any means.
Prexis
Prexis on Nov 13 '08
ginette is right, you've basically collected a few different cliches and stuck them onto a t-shirt without integrating them into an actual design. it just looks awkward, they're all completely seperate and in different styles.

also plenty of people have done the multiple cliches brought together concept before.
nwromano
nwromano on Nov 13 '08
Ginette, the fact that yo say it's "pretty awful to look at" makes me smile.

Do you not understand?

I could have made all this crap look cute and cohesive, but then I would be complementing the various objects.

The fact that the design is disjoint furthers the humorous value.

My first idea was to do all the drawings with s crayon to make them look as if they were created by a five year old.

This is a self-reflective piece. It is not meant to be beautiful.

howsabout...

the owl and bird silhouette sitting in the tree. it's raining. below is a panda - with a heart on his sleeve - playing the guitar. square vector character hates the music and wants to kill him (skull/speech bubble). the horizon line is made from telegraph poles. a butterfly is leaving the scene with buzzzz (helvetica) and dotted line trailing behind; maybe square dude stepped on another bug and there're splattered remains.

...all this on a vintage background of circles and swirls.

If you're happy that this looks terrible and you say its a self reflective piece than what makes you think anyone wants to wear it as a shirt.

Boring since cliche designs like this are cliched themselves. This is also executed TERRIBLY, has an unsightly color scheme, and a poor layout. Keep practicing & try to stray away from the shape tool in AI. 1
zoneuman
zoneuman on Nov 13 '08
Even through all the disjoint I find something oddly appealing about this design. I believe it makes itself less of a cliche design by all the elements somewhat separated. It wouldn't carry the same impact as it does if all the members of the "gang" were put together into a scene. Good idea and interesting approach
nwromano
nwromano on Nov 13 '08
Honestly ppatrickkylee, this would really function better as a print, however, people are so "shirt happy" I felt as if it was my only option.

Shnood on Nov 13 '08
Very funny and so true, not saying that I'm not guilty. You should throw in something referencing to communism or Karl Marx 'cause that's definitely frequently exploited.

Ginette, you obviously have no sense of humor! I love this piece! It's crappiness reflects SO MANY of the shitty Threadless submissions that we vote on every day.

As a graphic designer, I find this incredibly funny and appropriate. I think I am going to puke if I see one more bird silhouette!

I think you are simply angry because in looking through your work I discovered a good bit of "random vector characters". Hahahahaha

Loafybob
Loafybob on Nov 13 '08
Jesus guys, the design is called "The Gang's All Here" not "Gang Up on Latisha". Is this design the most beautiful... hell no, not by any stretch of the imagination.

However....

The concept is absolutely hilarious and I could not agree more. Threadless is just flooded with all this stupid "wanna-be" artsy shit and it is so unoriginal and overdone.

If this shirt does not win, I would certainly hope it's for a reason other than bitter, creatively lacking people voting 1 or 0 on it because they saw something from one of their designs on it.

Keep it up nwromano!

That said, I saw a similar concept done a while ago over on the TeeFury website.

Looked for a while and couldn't find the old link but it worked like a pick and choose of elements. Kind of, "Build Your Own Shirt" thing.

I'm pretty sure that ginetteginette doesn't really get what is trying to be said, or maybe it is jealousy. None of her submissions has even broken an average rating above 2.9, but she is obviously a very angry and bitter person. But you can now ridicule me ginetteginette, you like to do that

gotta say i err on ginette's side here.

the idea itself is quite played out and it's been done a lot better elsewhere - check olly moss' 'ultimate' shirt. wow, deja vu, i've namechecked an olly shirt somewhere else today…

anyway, i agree totally that the design has no cohesion or purpose. saying 'that's the point' is ridiculous. even when designing with the purpose of 'outing' cliches, you can still produce something pleasing to the eye surely?

Torakamikaze
   Torakamikaze on Nov 14 '08
I'm so tired of people hopping on the "ginette's jealous cause I dont like her designs" bandwagon. For fuck's sake... yeah, she's blunt about things, but she's being honest. And is that seriously so wrong? Are we so desperate for compliments and admiration that it's impossible to accept one person giving their honest negative opinion?

Oh, and my apologies for being an 'elitist douchebag' for agreeing with her complaint. Because despite all these random accusations that the only reason people agree with her is because we're all bitter and apparently don't understand 'the joke', not a single person has come off that way. Everyone has explained their reasoning as to why this could be better... and I don't know how it could've been painted any clearer.

Anywho, apologies for ranting on your design nwromano. I'm sure you have plenty more up your sleeve, so don't let all this craziness discourage you from continuing to submit.

it's funny but too much stuff is going on at once in this shirt. maybe it would be funny if all of the different cliches were somehow exploding out of a box (on the back of the shirt) and maybe "the gang's all here" could be across the front of the shirt?

I like the idea of this and I think that most designers or general pop-culture observers get the humor but I tend to agree with these other folks that it could be done more artfully. I do understand your intention to be anti-art but even that has a duty to basic good aesthetics.

Also, I think you could have done without all the labels. The same people who get this shirt are also the people who do not need to know the names of the elements in order to recognize their cliche-ness.

All of the philosophical design stuff aside, you want people to like the shirt enough to buy it so it's worth making it look good.

Way to take the criticism. Really, it does good to pay attention to what people have to say even if it is sometimes just, "you suck!" It forces you to reflect, either to defend yourself or to realize that maybe they might have a point. We've all gotten that here (I know I have). Good luck in the future.

I think the lesson that could be learned is that if you intend to design a shirt mocking trend, you still have to have to actually design it well, rather than just bringing light to your observation.

I personally think that "cliché-calling" is a bit cliché in itself.

now all you need is a miniature version of the shirt itself on the shirt.

confusing enough?

ironicly, this whole 'pointing out cliches' thing has been done over and over. i feel like every time i score shirt designs one of these pops up...so add a "this shirt" to the list and you're golden
