I should really get on with some proper work one of these days.

awesome work. really like your drawings. don't like the color tho, otherwise, i'd buy it.

too close to the edge, i don't the icon on the sleeve. i think the one on the sleeve would be a really good shirt on it's own.

i like your illustration style. did you try incorporating the blue into the sleeve too?

man, this is 2 shirts that would be awesome on their own. the sleeve design would work great by itself. i say split em up, and score with 2.

Drawing is kinda cool, but too derivative of Futura's character artwork for UNKLE.
Jawa
Jawa on Mar 14 '04
ok well. it would be great if i WAS like futura but im not. please check out his site and artwork before making such ridiculous statements in the future. http://www.futura2000.com/

but thants for the 'constructive' criticism. oh hang on there was nothing constructive about it...silly me.
Jawa
Jawa on Mar 14 '04
ok ok. i really got out of the wrong side of the bed. but i think people have this crazy mental image of futura's work and if you refresh your memory i think you would see that he is much better and very different from my work.

remove the sleeve, and put it on a diff colour shirt, and i would buy!

Love the illustration, and the color totally rocks. Lose the sleeve, though. I happen to like bright freakin' yellow shirts!

the blueprint like line quailty is great, i like the colors and have no idea who this futura person is.. i don't think i'll even try to find out either.
i do have a question about YOUR design though,
does this character walk on it's hands?
just trying to figure it out.

Thanks doomgiant for backin' me up on the Futura/Unkle issue. Let the people decide...follow the link and tell me these characters don't look similar. Jawa, you need to cool out and learn to take some constructive criticism.

It'd be perfect without the arm illustration, I'd definitely buy it.

jawa: slow loris shirts

And yeah, I can see the similarity between the two. I could pull out my unkle cd jacket right now and if not know any better, think that you were at least inspired by the graphic. I dont think anyone here is saying that you copied it; in my opinion your design is more technical than the unkle one and also has other differences, but i agree that the general body style resembles it.
knivesout
knivesout on Mar 18 '04
like you said it futura does a better job than you
the extension of the arms and the form of the character is "subliminally" derivative of Futura

if its really a self portrait it must come from a better understanding of self (i say this because i think its worth it)
i'm not saying you don't understand youself or that your design sucks or its too much like futura
i'm just saying it can be more selfish and individualistic

and the sleeve design looks like superdeux

i just cant see it., but maybe thats because im in the thick of it. wood and trees and all that.

my work comes totally from comic books, and i would say i have taken a lot more influence in my work from Jamie Hewlett than Futura or any Graffitti work. I mean i dont copy anyone and im not suggesting that anyone is saying that i did but I know my work and know where my influences lie. Check out some of Hewletts work and hit me back.

As to constructive criticism - that would be great. and yes perhaps i'm bad at taking it. but i think its pretty easy to look at anyones work and relate it to others. Its not exactly constructive.

Plus i am always wary of taking criticsm from people on here who haven't submitted any tee's. Why take criticsm from somebody who could very well be absolutely terrible at design and have no taste.

Plus some more - controversy is great and debate is useful.

Plus - would you judge any scratch drawn character as similar to futura. Brit- you suggest that the body style is similar - its a body. i mean its got arms and legs. that is what bodys look like. perhaps the contruction is the same? however in terms of construction my work is more derivative of MOP Records illustration team.

All of this is good talk. and i enjoy it. i dont think i need to calm down or whatnot. its you guys who seem to get worked up about MY thoughts on MY work. I mean if anyone has a right to= defiend it its ME. right?
Jawa
Jawa on Mar 18 '04
and of course its not a self portrait. im yanking your chain. although i do have really long arms. freakishly long.

Possiblt the best comments page yet. Everyone deserves a pat on the back, and a cup of tea.

I like this shirt a lot, and if you lose the sleeve then it's a possible 5. And I've only given one of those yet.

knivesout on Mar 19 '04
you don't need to defend your work
you've displayed a design sensibility already
its clear this person knows how to draw and is if not will be a good designer
its taking what everyone says. bad/good and really thinking through what ppl say is of any use

some people say: i hate/love it! i can't really explain it but it sucks/rocks!
to me that just amounts to this:
Q: so where are you?
A: here!

mindkillaz on Mar 19 '04
Well, I really like the design and the sleeve doesn't bother me. Although, I think you could make a seperate piece from it if you wanted. I would like to see some different color combos. I really don't like wearing that bannana color. Nice work and hope to see more!

IT IS LIKE FUTURA, LIKE IT OR NOT! EVEN THE LANGUAGE 'project jawtron' is like the world depicted in his book. It is obvious that the best graffitti artist in the world has influened your work, whether you like it or not. Just keep drawing and a more individual style should develop.
