About my design

by Numinous
While using my magnifying glass on a nearby ant mound, I suddenly discovered a very unusual species of ant. I immediately ran inside for material to sketch the mound and a spade to unearth a section. What I discovered is now presented to you (with some artistic license).

It appears these ants developed a kind of ground-up, or grassroots, democracy, with three separate branches (not to mention gobs and gobs of eggs): judicial, executive, and legislative. I never thought ants needed representation, or had a voice, but go figure. Apparently, ants love democracy too.

ATTN: For HIGHER RESOLUTION images of the many, many, details illustrated check out my profile page or Flickr photo page:

Design: Shirt color is cream. Roughly four colors with texturing to give a soft worn groovy look.

uh...wow. There have been some good subs in this contest, but this blows the others, including my own, out of the water. The overall illustration and idea is flawless and the details are hilarious. Glad you put a link 'cause they're hard to appreciate from this view.

Brilliant, I'm jealous. $5 and PRINT

shakethesheets on Aug 15 '08
I'd ditch the blue background/outline and just put it in for the sky to minimize the blocky look a little bit.

and if the awesome details aren't really showing up at this level, they'll likely look too small to appreciate on the shirt as well. I think this is an excellent design, but a couple things hold it back from really being incredible on the shirt.

Completely disagree with shakethesheets, completely agree with LB. This is a flawless design. Details that are hard to see in a 640x800 template are much easier to see on a 13x20 design on a shirt. Best in the comp so far. Intelligent and well executed idea.

I've bought shirts before that had small details when I loved the big detail images of them in the submissions... they ended up being shirts I wore less and just wished I had big posters of. that, and not seeing the need for an outline on the below-ground portion of the design are where my comments stem from. But it may do really well... Nice job, and good luck!

this has a major flaw in not being a full-shirt print... at this size it'd just be too boxy... it needs to stretch out and really breathe on the canvas, really take over the shirt.

Still voting well, tho, because you can't deny the skill that went into this. great illo.

DEF a design that needs some belt printing pronti! this gets a 5$ if it isn't confined to the center of the tee...so many amazing details and fantastic ideas abound in this one.

Yeah I totally agree with shakethesheets and some others, this is a really sweet design, but the boxyness is holding it back. It really just needs to full the whole shirt. But this is awesome!

Go here to see a close up section of the underground (approx. 1 mg), and go here to see a closer image of the grass and light textured border (approx. 1 mg in size).

i actually really like the edges and the shape of the illustration. makes it fit with things like bill of rights, declaration of independence...the parchment feel looks like an actual historic document from the ant world. very clever actually...

I sort of disagree that it should fill the shirt. But I could see how that would look good, too. I guess its just preference. The reason I like it as is is because it reminds me of old botanical drawings where you see the roots of the plant underground. (They tend to be confined to the same shape.) Not sure if this was the intended effect.

I see an "ant" series here. How about ants during a war time scenario? Most ants, are in fact, always attacking, invading, fighting w/ other ants ( sometimes termites etc.. ) to survive. WWII ..ANT STYLE! Oh yeah! 5$
