I would absolutely love this shirt if the illustration were a tad better, clean up those lines, and add in some shading...Some greys and browns could really make this a great shirt.

I agree with Hiresdes, the little girl and could use some more detail and color

It might be a coincidence, but “girl with the bomb” is a famous street art image by a British artist who goes by the name Banksy.

I don't think Banksy would appreciate this

Yes, my inspiration was from Banksy's work. My aim was not to copy his idea but to add more to it. If he finds that offensive, he can contact Threadless and get this taken out of the running.

Needs a little cleaning up- I'm not familiar with Banksy's "girl with the bomb" but as long as this was inspired by- and not copied- I think it has cool "post no bills" cold war style- and a powerful message.

clickable link to Bansky's piece

Obviously not a direct copy, as it isn't quite as clean and the girl is in a different position.

I share thedarrien`s opinion, too similar to banksy.

I love it. I actually like the blurred lines, it looks more like street art, and yes i am a HUGE fan of Banksy and this is similar, but I'd still buy this up. I like the placement...
Imxyour_rushmore
Imxyour_rushmore on Aug 19 '08
a little too sloppy.

it's obviously a different girl... but is that all it takes to make a design your own?

I don't really think so.

Yes, my inspiration was from Banksy's work. My aim was not to copy his idea but to add more to it. If he finds that offensive, he can contact Threadless and get this taken out of the running.

I think by the time he actually finds out about this it would be too late.

But frankly it's not really an issue, as Threadless would never (knowingly) put themselves into a copyright situation like that, anyway. They'd just never print this.

With that in mind... I'm don't know why this has been submitted. Shouldn't you be doing designs that CAN be printed? I mean, isn't that the whole point of submitting?
slickt0mmy
slickt0mmy on Aug 19 '08
I fail to see where this is copyright infringement. Yes, Banksy's work has a girl holding a bomb. So does mine. But they are two totally different girls in totally different poses. The bomb is also different.

Going by what you're saying, if I take a picture of a cat and a ball of string, no one else can ever take a picture of a cat and a ball of string because I already claimed that combination of objects.

Flippinheck
Flippinheck on Aug 19 '08
A cat and a ball of string is a common image that doesn't belong to anybody.

Your image is a reworked copy of a well known image, done in the same style as the original artist.

If you can't tell the difference, then there's very little that I can say to convince you. I have zero interest in launching into a long, go-nowhere debate about what constitues plagiarism and what doesn't.

I do, however, have complete confidence in Threadless' ability to distinguish between the two.

I was only wondering aloud because I thought people submitted here in order to win.

I think the design is brilliant.

It must be said that this, in fact, is not copyright infringement. It is NOT the origional design, it HAS been acknowledged by the designer that the design was inspired by the origional, not stolen and manipulated to make it the designer's own. I like Banksy's work. It's beautiful and sends a wonderful message- like this design. It seems, though, all daring messages must be controversial.

slickt0mmy on Aug 19 '08
If you're so confident that this is plagiarism, and confident that Threadless would pick up on that, wouldn't they have caught it during the week-long approval period?

Oh wait, you wouldn't know about that because you've never submitted anything...
NocturnalDaze
NocturnalDaze on Aug 19 '08
actually there is one guy who has putt plagiarised stuff all over here, but they didnt do anything about it. It was ripped straight from stock photo.

I like this just work on the line work a bit. Less photo shoppy/stencily and more stylized (less minimalism)

Great start!
slickt0mmy
slickt0mmy on Aug 19 '08
thanks for the advice, NocturnalDaze

and Flippinheck, I apologize for making a cut towards you having not submitted anything here. That was out of line.
Flippinheck
Flippinheck on Aug 19 '08
Heh. Now you're just mudslinging. Just as I don't need to cook to criticise the cooking, I certainly don't need to draw in order to recognise bad art - or plagiarism.

They approve hundreds of subs every day. And not everybody knows all of Banksy's work off by heart. They might have missed it. But now that it's been pointed out...

All the same, you're right. I shouldn't presume to know how they think. I do, however, know that they've got more than enough quality subs to choose from that they don't need to risk it with this one. You've hardly made it a must-have.

Good luck :)

Ah, just saw your apology. Thank you, and I'll apologise in return for hijacking your submission.

I'll go now.

why doesn't Threadless catch any of the Banksy bights before sending them out for the masses to rip apart?

doesn't look like plagiarism to me. i like it.

I agree that the design is not infringement.

And I like the single color sillhouette(sp?) style it has, but I wish the lines were rougher, which would give it a better shadow effect, like a permanent shadow on a wall after a bomb blast.

It also would be cool to have the text Large on accross the back at the top. eh?

Banksy.

Surely you'll have some copyright issues.

I agree with Norteaa about Bansky. There is a time and place for street art I personally think it isn't not on this tee shirt.
