why would you put such a scary shirt on such a little one? much better on older kids and grown ups. nice design, though!

I chose to use a young child as my model so that teens and adults would remember the days when they were once small and helpless. If I were to have used an adult it wouldn't have got the same reaction, it would be just another t-shirt model. Thanks for the comments! :)

Turbolucy, why must you pick apart everyone's choice of model? You realize this is a contest for the shirts, right?

I looove the perspective on this one. I'm glad it's not glow in the dark, sometimes that makes it tacky.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my nightmares as a child come to life! GREAT effect here especially on the shirt and also awesome perspective. Please tell me all the lit up parts shall be in glow ink so the piece can be enjoyed day or night because it'll outline all the important parts of the sub?

Anyways, I digress. I love what you've designed here and I hope it gets printed for kids and adults alike.

I completely agree, but at least it's not luring them into the basement with adult toys...

umm, this design is blatantly stolen from an illustration in the book There's a Witch under the Stairs by Maggie Smith. It's a cute idea for a kid's shirt, but it's not original. I wouldn't vote for it.

I've been looking for one for ten minutes.

Bottom of t he page.

The book is out of print, and amazon.com doesn't even have a picture, so I doubt anyone but seizedown has ever seen it. And I doubt Maggie Smith invented the idea of things under the stairs.

Hmmm, the idea of the kids afraid to go down the dark steps is so spread... I like the way it's done, so I scored it 5 :)
shewhositsandstares
shewhositsandstares on Jul 23 '08
... I also doubt Maggie Smith illustrated her book, she probably just wrote the story... and she was definitely not the first to speak of monsters under the stairs, anyone with a basement knows that fear! the monsters look a little similar, but that is the only similarity i see with this design and that book!

I used to fear in the dark. Is the monsters eyes glowing in dark?
Drok.txt
Drok.txt on Jul 23 '08
Great design! and it is NOT a copy of that book, no matter how bitter and warped seizedawn's comment was. Did you beat them in a shirt battle or something? I am sure there are thousands of kids that were scared of stairs... doesn't mean crap. completely original.
empiricist
   empiricist on Jul 23 '08
I appreciate everyones kind comments, thanks!

I'm starting to agree about the "kids toys" not being on the box, mainly because it would make the design more internationally appealing. As for the glow in the dark ink, I would totally be up for having the illuminating light and eyes of the monster glow! I never thought about that, but I agree it would be rad!!

I promise and guarantee that this design is 100% original!! I have never heard of or seen this book in my life. I do agree with shewhositsandstares that the monster has some pretty similar characteristics but the concept, perspective, color scheme and subjects are much different. It was even startling to myself to find the monsters to be alike, but it's all by surreal coincidence! It feels awful to be accused of stealing another artist idea, but I really do promise that I stole nothing from Maggie Smith. I hope this doesn't affect the outcome of this design :(

Definitely brings back the memories... You know, sometimes if I'm in a really dark hallway, I still walk (or run) to the light when I see it. Same thing goes if I watch a scary film and go to bed. I nearly leap onto my bed. Great design for all tees!

I see no relationship between this design and Smiths. I do see a universally shared experience, the monster down the stairs, in the closet or under our beds. Great mood of the illo here, it wonderfully conveys the spookiness of the theme. Great composition and color, looks great on the shirt. $5
