A little too sexist for my taste, but quite funny nonetheless. Wouldn't wear but I know several who would, so I voted positive for it. Looks very cleancut and well done. Middle one is my fave.

if you think about it, it's actually more insulting to the guys--it's assuming that every guy only wants sex rather than meaningful.

I hate this! OMG! PIG! JK. I think it would make for a better shirt if you didn't specify gender roles ya know? Maybe a neutral color. This stereotypes men and women which is wrong to do. Relationships are complex. Go that route, I think it would be better received. If you did 5 five all the way.

Funny how people overreact at the slightest things. Oh, that's right, this is the internet where a bunch of self-righteous people believe it's their job to dispose their view of life onto others and ridicule them if they oppose.

I really think everyone is over reacting as well. This is a perfect example of what is wrong with society today. I have seen images even on this website that depict violence, murder, etc which stirred little to no reaction. It's a funny stereotype. We all just need to relax, hang out, be kind, have a laugh together, and enjoy life. I wonder if a women designed the shirt if there would even be this descussion???

Peace and love everybody!

Anyway, this is such a cliched concept, but it looks awesome on the shirt. I like the middle example the best, with everything on the front and on black.

And yeah, ring (with a nice, big, diamond-shaped stone) before bed, not because of PC-ness, just because it more fits the girly lovey stereotype.

The coolness of icons telling the story is nowhere near as funny as the kneejerk reactions on all the pc Lobots out there. It's a joke on the human experience as the mundane folks live it! Lighten up!

Perhaps, though, to prevent future pc flare-ups use a more gender-neutral title: "Relationships are complex", etc.

I don't get how it's racist. It's on a black t-shirt and a white one.

I agree the ring needs a little work, maybe a big fat diamond on top instead of a dot. I think you should do a divorcee version too, where after two of the kids, it points to a new man :P and the cycle continues 3 or 4 times. Good idea, nice execution :)

Anyway, I agree with the half of the comments, those where they don't seem to be sitting on a cactus. Geez, didn't know you could get this self-righteous because of this kind of design.

And I can't see the racist thing at all...

I like it, I'd like to see more of these with varying themes.^^

I cant believe how much everyone is underreacting. People need to stop not taking things things so seriously. After all, it is a century. Did you know that there are like 80 unwed teenage mothers in the world? That's more than six fold. This shirt insists that babies should be born prematurely, and I dont agree with that statement. Babies should be grown in a lab and safely monitored by lab technicians. I wish people would wake up and eat the roses, cause this is blatant racism. I had to cover my 12 year olds eyes.

Thing is, there's nothing in the design to suggest this is supposed to be tongue in cheek, or ironic. Every day I have these cliches and stereotypes forced down my throat as "the truth" or "just the way things are", and it's simply not the case. This just seems like another example of the kind of pervasive heteronormative sexism, or anti-feminist backlash that I see every day.

I'm not saying that this is what you're going for - you may have meant this ironically, but it just doesn't look that way. And because it doesn't look that way, I wouldn't wear it. I'd definitely come across as a sexist idiot wearing this shirt.

I think you should consider the type of T-shirts that area submitted and sold on this website. Very few if any at all are meant to be taken seriously. Most are parody, some are artsy, but in general, they are all fun. I think the designers on this website are quite familiar with the type of subject matter that Threadless prefers. The fact that it is even posted on this website is an indication that it is meant to be tongue in cheek.

"The fact that it is even posted on this website is an indication that it is meant to be tongue in cheek."

First of all, I don't think that's true at all. There are a massive number of contributions to Threadless, that vary massively in content and the quality of the artwork. Not everyone that submits is familiar with the style of the stuff that is printed, or the attitudes and views of the people who frequent the site.

Second, this could be considered funny either because a) "Oh, it's so TRUE!!!", or b) "Oh, that's so cliched and ironic!!!". The first interpretation is offensive and boring and tedious, the second is more acceptable, but still IMO kinda tedious.

Lastly, people are supposed to wear this on the street, out of the context of the lovely, progressive, good-time Threadless community, this would just come across as an offensive retreading of the same sexist stereotypes.]
Freakypicasso
Freakypicasso on Jul 10 '08
Take these shirts for example:

http://www.threadless.com/submission/21111/Afternoon_Delight

http://www.threadless.com/product/259/Stabby_McKnife

So it's ok to print T-shirts that depict gay animal sex and that poke fun of the idea of stabbing people with knifes, but it's not okay to comment on gender stereotypes?

"First of all, I don't think that's true at all. There are a massive number of contributions to Threadless, that vary massively in content and the quality of the artwork. Not everyone that submits is familiar with the style of the stuff that is printed, or the attitudes and views of the people who frequent the site."

You actually bring up a good point. However, although the artwork submitted by artists on this website are varied, Threadless generally chooses the tongue in cheek designs. They definitely have a design preference, and I think the designs submitted to the website are reflecting that more and more.
13strong
13strong on Jul 11 '08
"So it's ok to print T-shirts that depict gay animal sex and that poke fun of the idea of stabbing people with knifes, but it's not okay to comment on gender stereotypes?"

If this is aimed at me, you're twisting what I said. First of all, why would it not be OK to portray gay animal sex? Who is that prejudiced against?

Regardless, my main point was that, outside of Threadless, on the street, it wouldn't be clear AT ALL that this was meant ironically - I would just look like a sexist asshole.
Freakypicasso
Freakypicasso on Jul 11 '08
Ok fair enough, but just one more thing to consider: it would be kind of hard to look like a sexist asshole wearing this T-shirt considering that the shirt stereotypes both genders, in which case you would be offending everybody equally :D

I guess the reason I like the design so much is the fact that it isn't one sided. It may seem that way at first and if it was then I would completely agree with you, but it isn't. It's the fact that it does stereotype both genders that creates the humor. Obviously not all men just want sex and not all women just want romance, love and marriage.

I'm guessing our perceptions are different, but this is how I understood the design.
13strong
13strong on Jul 11 '08
Just because it stereotypes both sexes doesn't mean it couldn't be perceived as sexist. There are plenty of idiotic men and women who genuinely believe that men basically just want casual sex and women basically want commitment and marriage and children. That's the other side to misogyny - is that men have to act a certain way as well.

"Obviously not all men just want sex and not all women just want romance, love and marriage."

You'd be amazed how many people don't think that's at all obvious.
