About the design

Submitted by quister on June 12, 2008

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, if every American household were to swap just one bulb to CFL (compact fluorescent light), we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.

That’s a remarkable, wonderful thing, a lollapalooza in my book.

Simulated monotone process print, (3 screens I think), works on most light colors. I’m hoping threadless would create a light green tee if this design does well.

Great illustration and looks great on the tee! Love it on sand.

The only reason that I don't like is not the art...(which is very nice). CFL's contain mercury. True, they will save you electricity and reduce greenhouse gases, but in return, you will have to..er...you SHOULD dispose of your used CFLs with proper hazardous waste guidelines. If not, mercury will be released into the environment...and in 7 years, when the bulbs start going bad, that amount will skyrocket. Heaven forbid you break one in your house with small children around. There's always a trade-off. I'd take a high electric bill over neurological mercury poisoning every day.

bodie chewning

and they give you a headache... like in highschool.
;P
nice art though

UWFA I believe you're misinformed.

The Sierra Club, Friends of The Earth, and Greenpeace are trying to get people to change to CFL bulbs as you speak. You can get your Greenpeace poster
HERE Or you can visit their new London exhibit featuring CFL bulbs HERE

Australia is banning the incandescent bulbs by 2010, followed by 8 other countries, the European Union just proposed a ban on any new production of old bulbs and California's ban starts in 2012.
Recycling and proper handling can effectively deal with the mercury, what we can't deal with is more and more CO2.

So, I think I'll trust these organizations before I fall for the MERCRY HYSTERIA being spread on the oh-so-trustworthy web.

Jemae

cool! ...i want this! PERFECTee 5$! :D

Ryuu62

awesome rendering

Burn king = quister. zinger. Nice work Q-man!

CFLs are some improvement over incandescents, but only a fool would claim that they are better from a waste-generation standpoint. Even if the CFLs are disposed of properly, there's all the e-waste generated from the ballasts.

And the light quality from CFLs is pretty inferior, too.

The real answer is to go from incandescents straight to LEDs. No bulb gas of any type, no fragile glass envelope, an awesomely long working life, and a light spectrum which can be "tuned". Much less power, too. The only obstacle is one which will eventually vanish -- a $50 per bulb pricetag.

Don't trust the government!

I Love It Definitely would by,

Thanks all.

asfi235, LED is the future, a lot of people are feverishly working on it, but even they say it's years away so, should we just sit on our hands until then? As far as being a "fool", I'm happy to be one- alongside Greenpeace, The Sierra Club, Friends of The Earth, the UN and Al Gore, (all called global warming alarmists and green house gas fanatics not too long ago), than wait for your perfect LED solution to arrive.

Mark Hartman, I don't trust the government either. That's why I'm going with the independent organizations mentioned above.

steppedonalego

That's why you dispose of your CFL's at HomeDepot's CFL Recycling Center.. other stores have them, too.

And if you get the warm white bulbs, the light is not inferior.

ManekiGrace

it's a great idea here!

MooCowMoo

Yeah, agreed with steppedonalego - you're supposed to recycle the CFL bulbs so that the mercury can be reused and safely transferred into new bulbs. Complaining about mercury pollution skyrocketing is just a poor excuse for sticking to outdated and non-sustainable ways of living.
Anyway, the design is fantastic. :)

opifan64

clever and beautifully rendered. $5

TELL A FRIEND!

This is the single most important thing you can do for the environment and this t-shirt allows you to communicate that brilliantly.

Global warming skeptics will tell you that the energy saved by changing your home to CFLs is insignificant compared to, say, the greenhouse output of China. It's just an excuse to continue bad practices.

Same with the mercury. It's not an issue if you dispose of them properly. If you care enough about the environment to drastically cut your energy usage by switching, you're not going to be stupid enough to dump your used bulbs.

Tell your friends, get them to change and together we can all make a difference.

Thanks everyone.
A special thanks steppe, MooCow, and squatter for seeing the light :P

roadkill3d

Brilliant! I love the blue version best.

PickintheIce

I really hope this gets printed, for twud be a buy!

Robotic Moose

I'll miss paying ¢50 per bulb. Also, those CFLs hurt my eyes so.

dacat

I for one use CFL's all the time, and I don't even notice the difference any more. My electric bill was cut in half, and the power company sent out thank you notes for saving them energy. I support this design :-)

Merzi

This design is actually really inspirational! I'm gonna try and switch to CFL's.
5$

I am already recycling like a madman.
(People, stop buying bottled water, just buy a water bottle and re-fill it!)

quister
quister profile pic Artist

Thanks for the support dacat. Merzi, yeah, I get the multi gallon water bottle delivered, (free dispenser, they recycle and cheaper), and refill the 16 ouncer.

olie!

I kind of feel some of the details could be taken out to make it more simplified, but that could be just me. Either way, you obviously did a great job here with an excellent concept.

rogerc00

The CFL bulb looks evil... the weird grin and the hand look as if they are rubbing together like a super villian after finally defeating the good guy. But I know thats not what you are going for here... just what I see.

shanelevi

i like it, but i don't like how the fluorescent bulb looks like it's grinning, and how the other bulb looks like its dead and drooling with its hands on its head

britters_19

great design. I like it on sand as well.

thommy

wonderful! it might be even better if the expression more obvious...

Mountain Gnome

Quister, this is not the first CFL Bulb Tee I've seen, but it is probably the Best. Five for you are Fiver for you getting the message across!

littleclyde

Well, after reading through all the comments I think I'm more informed? At any rate, nice composition and clean lines! I like the sand the best.

WheezyTo

Love it, but the visual path may be thrown off by the shadows.

L1berty

awesome concept, great design!

wotto

had to look closely but then i realised this is a very clever design. I like the hands, nice execution.

quister

Thanks, thanks, thanks =]

cmg

It's very clever, but I really don't think it's an attractive design. I don't think it's something I would want to wear.

abdlkarim

very cool! purple please :)

kaloman

such a clean and wonderful illustration –$5

Riccard

Very well done, nice colors, pretty and a good message. I'd buy this shirt!
