The spirit Andrealphus was said to be able to give a human the form of a bird, and to take on the form of a peacock, or a person. Dantalion was said to be able to take on the form of any man or woman, to go anyplace in the world, and to make a person feel anything. I found my own meaning in these old symbolic spirits, and I translated them into a spirit of music:

The magician of music is an incredible being. He or She has the power to transport you anywhere in the world in an instant, and to make you feel any emotion, with only the sweep of a hand or the sigh of a breath. If you have ever felt your soul swell and your heart lift as the music hits the perfect notes, the perfect harmonies, then you have been under this magician's spell, because music grants flight to the mind and song to the spirit. Music is the closest thing we will ever have to wings.

Inspired by my music as I was sketching in Photoshop. The magician is intended to be androgynous, so that you may see it however you like, as male or female.

I did not want to include anything clearly musical because I love symbolism that is not overtly obvious.

Looks good on the shirt, I always like when designers take that into consideration, many designers on threadless seem to forget that it needs to look good on a tee.

your symbolism is not obvious at all. There is nothing to symbolize music, even after reading your description. How about some subtle embedded notes, treble clefs, tenor clefs, bass clefs, someting... Great design, though. Put a lot of work into it. I give you a backwards E for effort. 3

For me music is not defined by notes on paper. It's defined by a feeling. I've never had any love for music notation, to be honest, it feels too rigid and mathematical. Music may have a base in math, but I'm in no way a mathmathically oriented thinker, so I feel music, I don't write it. This is the image that was born of how I felt, so this is what it is. I wasn't making an effort to write the written reality of music, I was making an effort to capture the thrill of its spirit.

Incredible detail and texture. I like the rhythm of the piece, the way there's breaks between the darks and lights, moving the eye from one pattern to another. Not my style but 5 for the great illo.
