Robotic Moose:

I drew the picture after watching Apocalypse Now and I had to read Lord of Flies for homework.

So it's not really a reference, but inspired by Piggy nonetheless.

There's nothing like a shirt depicting a little kid with his eye shot out to promote world peace. Man you guys are idiots to thinks this would EVER get printed.
andrewthecoolraccoon
andrewthecoolraccoon on Jun 09 '08
The shirt doesn't need to promote something to be good. it just depends on what sort of emotion it creates. I think it is a great t-shirt. reminds me of Gorillaz.

It does look a bit like a child due to the proportions of head to body and the lankiness of the figure...

The scratchiness of the drawing is interesting in relation to the subject of war, as it is a destructive act... but the amount of scratchiness of the drawing, particularly the line coming off the helmet being most prominent, feel less purposeful and more like the drawing is unfinished.

As far as the subject, yes we see a wounded soldier, but what does that mean to the viewer...? Putting it on a T-shirt feels more like glorification, especially since we don't know if this soldier is alive or dead... He's upright, so we perceive him as alive... but he's got a eye wound, so it could be fatal... It's a little ambiguous.

Why not try doing a drawing of this character in a context of where he is at war, and through that try to get across that he does not approve of it or that it is not a lofty pursuit to you/him. The image as is does not say to me "End War", I only know that because you have it in type above it. If you take that type away, we see a wounded soldier or a boy playing soldier.

Simply having an image of a wounded soldier could mean a lot of different things to different people. Think about your intentions and what would be the best way to get them across to others who might see your t-shirt.

The final scene of All Quiet on the Western Front, symbolizes what you were trying to get across beautifully.

i think it's danged swell! definately bringing back memories of tank girl. :)

and brobaz obviously is a stuck up wiener.

the assholeyness is completely unnecessary.

and "priusi" are completely practical. meh. :P

i think the biggest reply i have pertaining to drivebyinsult's comment is, look at how unhappy the child is. no one would make a shirt with an unhappy child soldier to remind everyone that world peace is bad.even if the kid was "playing soldier".

the character is not upright, he is diagonal; placing him as a dead soldier would only make people angry and upset at the gore; dead children aren't a good idea to put on t-shirts. this, if anything, is trying to make people subtley realize the doubts of war, etc.

giving the drawing would only take away the creativeness of the viewer. as you said, you don't know if the child is playing soldier or an actual underaged soldier, which gives chance of more thought and imagination, which all of us could use more of.

To all:

I really adore your feedback, thank you.

And to all:

You do not know if it is a child, an underaged soldier, or even just a young looking man.

you do not know if he is dead, or if he is alive.

you know only what you perceive when you see it.

I made this ambiguity because I like that people can see it for what it is or as their mind perceives it.

Perhaps it is just a picture? perhaps it is protesting the fatality of war? Perhaps the blindness we have afflicted ourselves with when we let war happen?

It could mean all of this, or none of this.
