About my design

by GumEverywhere
A tribute to my all-time favorite viral internet reference. I tried to tone it down just a bit to make the shirt more wearable, so here's the Wiki in case you've forgotten...

did you create any part of this?

Wasn't this up for scoring about a week ago?

No, that was a different one, and I think parts of it were actually drawn.

I actually drew ALL of this by hand. It was a pen and ink drawing that I scanned, and I still have the original. It was cleaned up in photoshop, but otherwise was done totally old school.

It was up a while ago but Threadless let me change some small parts and re-post because someone falsely accused me of plagiarism in the second comment.

I guess I should take it as kind of a compliment to my work that someone thought I just xeroxed a Michelangelo.

First of all, I think this is a great design, and it has been changed enough from the original submission to make it perfect for a t-shirt, which is to say that it's not objectionable unless you are in the know, in which I think it is hilarious.

Second, I want to say that I know the artist, and people need to stop being so incredulous that there are people out there with actual skills in art, not just vector drawing programs. She trained in Italy, for chrissakes.

   ginetteginette on May 31 '08
it's not that it looks that perfect, both parts of this image just look totally unrelated style-wise - and although this can be a good look if well done, it doesn't look swell here at all.

^haha, trained in italy? so what?

just to clarify, "people out there with actual skills in art" did not refer to you, ginette.

The drawing is ok, but the design dosen't really work, without the title it doesn't make sense and it's not that appealing to be a standalone random piece. Even with the title it doesn't really make sense, it's a classical (baroque or whatever the hell it's inspired in) illustration chasing some cat silhouettes, it doesn't transmit the joke properly, and a masturbation joke is not that good to begin with.

I suggest you focus your drawing skills in a different direction next time, I doubt this will score much higher than the first version. Better luck for next time.

There Ginette, fixed it for you.

I'm not sure I trust the artistic evaluation of someone who doesn't recognize one of the most famous and publicly reproduced pieces of art of all time. Stop reading manga and pick up a real art book once in a while.

Whoa, thanks for the hostility, guess they don't teach you how to take criticism in Italy.

And this is what a great adaptation of a classical piece looks like, and it got printed, and the designer happens to bea really nice guy.

Yeah, without the reference I didn't get it, I recognized the michaelangelo (Mutant power!) but it lookes like he's sending out shadow kitties, so wondered at first if it was another nine lives things.

If the styles were more integrated, and I had a helluva idea what was going on, I could appreciate it a lot more.

Oh, and please with the defensiveness. This is up here as a possibility for people to buy as a product, art and consumerism combined and it is a growing process on both ends. There can be no growth w/out taking in the suggestions of others. Doesn't mean you have to accept them, but immediately shutting your mind to them does no good and lashing out does harm.

Cheers.

Yes, this is ridiculous. We must all chill.

An accusation of plagiarism is the most offensive possible response to a piece of artwork. Even if critics otherwise abuse the art, at least they are acknowledging that it is an original piece of work and that the artist is not trying to perpetrate a fraud. To make such an accusation without any foundation whatsoever is simply absurd, wrong, and spiteful.

I did not mean to retaliate, but I am aggravated that twice I have put serious time and effort into submissions only to be falsely accused of copying them. Perhaps next time I will simply put in less effort to make my work look more "authentic."

maybe if you didn't create work that looked like clipart no one would question you, or if this design looked like it was done in one cohesive style and not like it was made by more than one person no one would question it either.

if the cats had been done in the same style as your reproduction i wouldn't have questioned it at all.

I don't recall accusing you of plagiarism, or saying "this is shit", "you suck" or anything remotely close to that. I do recall saying your drawing is ok, and mentioning your drawing skills, and wishing you good luck for next time, I also recall this : "Stop reading manga and pick up a real art book once in a while.".

I've never been too fond of pre-impresionist art all together, so I didn't mean I didn't recognize the piece, I'm just not sure in what style or current to file it. Mondrian, Miró and Kandinsky are among my favorites, pretty far from this.

Anyways, I don't enjoy this kind of discussions much so I will not respond here anymore, good luck to you.

Let's just settle this without any other comments on the style of this, plagerism, etc discussions with the simple fact that, no offense gumeverywhere, but this isn't at all appealing to the eye the way it has been visualized and makes little to no sense without the line from the original joke underneath the picture, and i think even people extremely knowledgeable of the original joke would be hard-pressed to still get the reference you are going for. It's okay, lick thy wounds and move on and good luck to you!

I liked it better with the dead cat.

"maybe if you didn't create work that looked like clipart no one would question you"

This is a hilarious statement
