About my design

by DaniellesGarden
Gesture Drawing: The act of making a sketch with relatively loose arm movements, or a drawing made this way. A gesture drawing is typically the first sort of drawing done to begin a more finished drawing or painting. It is used to block in the layout of the largest shapes in a composition..

I like the figures, I just don't think that it's that funny. Your other designs are better I think.

In Africa, the O.K. gesture is considered obscene.

Yeah, interesting visually, but the concept isn't that entertaining.

sorry I cut sri lanka victoria.

interesting robotic, in the Iran, and Iraq I believe the thumbs up symbol is considered obscene.

malcolm - backwards peace sign is considered obscene in australia, england, and New Zealand.

Others - sorry you aren't entertained by this. As an artist who is extremely fond of gesture drawing, I find it quite amusing.

regardless thanks everyone for your votes and comments

Dear Malcolm Man,

No. It's not the peace sign. Yes, you are dumb. When your palm faces out would be a peace sign. When the palm faces inwards, it would be an obscene gesture.

i thought the flipped peace sign meant 'victory' in england especially???

DaniellesGarden
   DaniellesGarden on May 27 '08
from Wikipedia ginette

The V sign is a hand gesture in which the first and second fingers are raised and parted, whilst the remaining fingers are clenched. With palm inwards, In the United Kingdom and some other English speaking countries, it is an obscene insulting gesture of defiance. During the Second World War Winston Churchill popularised its use as a "Victory" sign (for V as in victory) initially with palm inwards and later in the war palm outwards. With the palm outwards, it is also used to mean "Peace", a meaning that became popular in the United States during the peace movement of the 1960s.

In England, the V sign is offensive, but not used as much as one finger.

Nice design, but I personally don't buy offensive tshirts.

Haha at everyone getting all picky at this design. I know that the middle finger has become quite widespread and displaced the V in a lot of places but c'mon people, you know what she means!

bobobob1230 on May 28 '08
@ oliveboo-

the whole point of the "gesture" drawing is that its rough

but then again i'm not really sure what you meant by careful anyways, could of meant anything

i like it, turned out well 5

I had a roommate from Sweden who did the 'backwards peace sign'. And he would simultaneously stick his tongue out while shaking the two fingers. He said that the vikings would cut the fingers off of archers when invading so they could no longer fire their bows, and so they would wave their fingers at them to shove it in their face.

it might just be because i don't like mannequin looking gesture drawings but i really wish it had looked more flowy like this http://static.flickr.com/55/106624623_d0fb09bd17.jpg

at least to me it would have been a bit more eye catching, and if you were to ever revisit this it might be more to the point to just make it one person giving the finger?

FOREARM JERK

Gesture: One hand slapped to the upper arm, and that arm raised with a fist.

Location: France, Southern Europe, the Mideast, and many other locations around the world

In much of the world this new-improved arm-sized phallic insult has replaced the more ancient middle finger. In France, where the gesture may have originated, it is called the bras d' honneur, or the arm of honor, which is a funny moniker for a gross sexual insult. This macho combination of a gigantic erect penis and a threatening fist says, 'Fuck off!', or 'Up yours!' very vehemently. As a special bonus, the slapping of the hand against the opposing arm makes it seem as if the super-penis has gone so far up the recipient's receiving canal, it can't go any further. Although it's not necessarily a homosexual gesture, the violated canal is presumably anal, and not vaginal. Not to be outdone by namby-pamby Europeans, Americans (and also the Portuguese) combine both gestures simultaneously, offering a special double dong attack

I like this.

Someone has probably said, but I'm too lazy to read everything. But the two fingered salute popular in Britain harks back to agincourt (I think) where the French would cut off the bow pulling fingers of captured English archers, on the battle field, the English archers would hold up their two bow pulling fingers to show they were still there. It then became a sign of contept.. much as it is today.

And there ends you history lesson for today.

URGENT: I am wondering if you can help me with a question relating to these gestures. In the first sketch (England, Australia, and New Zealand) you have used the 'V' sign. Is this because it is a more common obscene gesture used in these regions? That is, in these countries, is it more common than the bras d'honneur? Other than Wikipedia, do you have some factual information on where these gestures originated, and which countries they are most commonly used? Thanks very much.
DaniellesGarden
   DaniellesGarden on Aug 04 '08
urgent?

no the V sign is not more common than say the middle finger. It is an obscene gesture. as for factual information regarding the use of the V sign in these regions, a google search will provide you with many links to sites other than Wikipedia for you to cross check information.
