About my design

by Moss
I saw this beautiful panel in a comic strip and decided to rework it in illustrator and submit it as a tee design.

The original artwork can be found here:

So yeah, I'm not trying to take credit for the original illustration, only the redesign.

You're so called "redesign" is a flat out rip off. This is a total infringement of copyright. If you "redesigned" a famous painting, that is called stealing. Be creative. Do something on your own without just tracing someone else's work. Designers don't seem to understand that tracing someone else's work doesn't make the "redesign" your work. This is especially risky when you plan to sell your "redesign" commercially. Educate yourself here: http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html

Agreed. I wasn't sure how people would recieve this, but if it is not acceptable then I retract this design.

I apologise. In fact, I was in two minds about submitting this. I guess that I shouldn't have, but at least I was honest.

Oh, and Flashshe, I do not trace all that often. look at my previous designs and see for yourself.

Comment no further, all has been said. I am ashamed, I have voted myself 0, flame me not.

moss i give you credit for explaining the source strait away, it's not like you were trying to hide it like so many others who get caught on this site. and flashshe, while you have a very valid point - have some tact...

I agree with others here in that at least you were upfront about the design. In essence though Flashshe has hit the mark. In general I find it disappointing when a good artist traces an image that is not their own ~ no matter how well executed. Contrary to popular belief, The Internet is not a royalty free source for images. Other photographers, illustrators, cartoonists and artists spend a lot of time and effort developing their original material. Sure - be inspired by what you see & absorb - but if tracing [either by hand or whatever] is your thing, get a digital camera and get out there to take your own shots. That way the work is all yours, and you can prove it if necessary by whipping out the bona-fide original ... Just my 2KB, no offence intended.

DestroyGrinder, I had utter and complete tact. Want me to act like I am talking to a baby and sugar coat the truth? I agree it was good that Moss at least credited the original, and did a good job in the vectorizing, but designers need to educate themselves...and I think my "untactful" opinion and the facts have done just that. I love how everyone tries to be so nice and "lay it on easy". People need a dose of the hard truth once in a while in order to learn.

Moss: I commend you for your response and maturity. Honestly, some of the things were not specifically meant in the context of your other designs or such, but more as a statement to designers in general. You have some really great designs that I think would make great shirts and are really creative and well done. No worries on this one, as it is sometimes hard to know where the "copyright line" is drawn.

... And House of Fu, you had some exellent comments and suggestions for designers.

yeah, you probably shouldn't have submitted this. I recognized where it came from right away, and if you didn't get the author's permission you shouldn't mess with it. People would be making money off of somebody else's design. That's the issue here.

i love the idea, but this seems like a sensitive issue (the redesign of it).

What if you made your own illustration of it?
