I really like the look of the tee but the font of the calculation at the topdoesnt match the rest of the t shirt for me... i thought it would be more scribbley.

I like it...and I'd buy it as is. $5 rating from me.

I actually like how the font of the calculation doesn't match the rest of the shirt - the teacher gives you the essay question typed out, and then you scribble your answer.

good stuff, i like the math problem aspect of it all, losing the type on the top would kind of lose the point of the design.

Hmm... About the writing, I was thinking like what Taurus 8 said. The teacher gives you the essay question typed out, and then you scribble your answer.

But if majority of you think otherwise, the font can easily be fixed. Comments?

Really? when a positive number is divided by something that is approaching zero, the result will grow withouth bound to a large number that is approaching infinity (in the positive direction).

Your explanation?
sejwedge
sejwedge on Apr 12 '08
it's not being divided by something that is approaching zero. it's being divided by zero itself... the limit does not exist!
concreterocket
   concreterocket on Apr 12 '08
sejwedge;
you can not do such thing (like putting x=3). It is a limit function

Your explanation?
3- ( 2x / ( x-3) ) = [ 3 / 0- ] = -inf

R != L

If you still don't believe me, you can draw graph of this function. It consists of two curves, for x = 3 one approaches +inf, the other one -inf.
concreterocket
   concreterocket on Apr 13 '08
mk,

Exactly. The answer is infinity!
That's why the kid can keep on tallying to infinity...

So what are we arguing about?
_mk
_mk on Apr 13 '08
something went wrong with my last comment ;)

Left-side limit and right-side limit are not both equal so the limit doesn't exist:

R = lim (x->3+) ( 2x / ( x-3 ) ) = [ 3 /0+ ] = +inf
L = lim (x->3-) ( 2x / ( x-3 ) ) = [ 3 /0- ] = -inf

R != L

If you still don't believe me, you can draw graph of this function. It consists of two curves, for x = 3 one approaches +inf, the other one -inf.

   concreterocket on Apr 13 '08
hahaha, ok. I should have put plus in the 3 then. Thanks for correcting me!

Is this Radiomode's secret design name? Hasn't he been sporting these counting hash marks as his icon for weeks now? I like the idea, and i really don't care if the answer is correct or not...i really think people ain't gonna have time to count all the slashes and see if it all adds up. and if they do, that's way too much time at staring at my chest when there are no breasts present. Nice one!

This is so awsome. Please print.

I agree with the comments. Kid more to the left for sym and the question in bigger and different type. I get what you are saying about it being a typed out exam question but to me the way it's presented suggests more a blackboard question: the colour, the kid standing, and the chalk-like writting.

5Ģ (way more than a measley 5 bucks!)
Divine11
Divine11 on Apr 14 '08
I love this!
I think I might agree with MPS. I liked the top font typed, but because the boy's using chalk, it's more a blackboard question.
I would so buy this although I don't understand the maths; my friends can. :)

arete81 on Apr 15 '08
love the concept! and of course the answer is indeed infinity :)

however i do have a problem with the math question.. what exactly would the kid be counting? this isn't exactly the type of problem where you count.. maybe you could have him opening the expression (a+b)^n = (a+b)^(n-1) * (a+b) = (a+b)^(n-2) * (a+b)^2 = and so forth, or some such problem.

(sigh) sorry for being such a geek

Yes, that was mentioned earlier.
That's why there will be a tiny change in the equation if this eventually picked (just one side limit).

apalmer3
apalmer3 on Apr 18 '08
The limit as x approaches 3 of 2x/(x-3) is what the function approaches as x gets closer and closer to 3. In this case, you'd use L'hospital's rule and take the derivative of the top and the bottom. When you do that, you get 2. :-D

So, yes, the little kid is way off. But it's a valiant effort. I give it a 5.
apalmer3
apalmer3 on Apr 18 '08
Okay, before you flame my last post here, I forgot you can only use that rule on infinite limits...

Disagree with the people saying the question should be scribbly. I think it looks awesome
concreterocket
   concreterocket on Apr 18 '08
Yeah apalmer3, the L'hospital's rule only applies if the limit of top and bottom are both equal to zero or are both infinite, which is not in this case.

Just minutes before the voting ends! Thanks ppl, the feedback so far is really great
