Nice and simple. I like it!

Please don't put my religious leader on a tee shirt! Buddhas belong on altars, not in the laundry touching your underwear :( this makes me sad.

why does it look weird at the top of his head where the wings are?

Seems like what ever I do put someone in not so great a mood , sorry I did not mean to offend anyone.

I agree with ilovecutedorks, the butterfly at the top is weird. And don't feel bad about offending someone, no art in the world was able to stand on it's own and not offend someone. Be bold in what you make and don't apologize for art! I really like your style.

I am not doing well with the designs at all I would rather this design get dropped out of the competition.

I suck, for sure.

Afromation, don't give up. It's just that when a design is obviously just a live traced photo (without those fill areas deleted) it seems like you've kind of thrown it together without thinking about it too much. Take the comments and do better on the next one, people can be harsh.

I would keep working with your illustration style. I loved your "don't mess with grandma" design. Just take negative comments in stride, you can only get better the more you do.

I'm with littleorosa, this is just in bad taste because any true budhist would not sport a budha on a t-shirt. Don't give up though just try to have a better understanding of the subject matter before hand.

"any true budhist would not sport a budha on a t-shirt" If you see this shirt on the road, kill it. Then learn how to spell Buddha.
Wasn't there a Buddhist monk who stuffed his pockets with fireworks on his deathbed, knowing that his students would cremate his body after they found him? Seems to me a true Buddhist might just have a sense of humor. A true Buddhist might even say there's no such thing as "bad taste", except for shirt designs with penguins.

Super sweet--and no glow. If you're offended don't buy it.

minus the whites and additional blue inks, just the brown on the blue tee would be top notch. its a very aesthetically pleasing design. and you all need to chill out.

@edg *shrug* I was half asleep so oh well on the spelling. It's not the sense of humor thing at issue, part of buddhism is non-extremism through moderation of self-indulence(there's more I'm just not getting into it). wearing ones religion on their shirt would be highly self indulgent. I didn't say a buddhist would have a problem with someone else wearing it, just that they wouldn't wear it. The bad taste part of my comment was intended so that if Afromation was calling himself a buddhist he should go brush up on it a bit, since it has been turning into a fad as of late to call ones self a religion while knowing nothing about it.

I am not buddist however I appreciate all beliefs, second I do not create designs to offend anyone group or race; I appreciate art and see all things through art.

That's why I said "if"(also not meaning to be offensive, just we've all seen it), and like I said I'm not offended just clarifing some stuff to edg.

Who cares about Buddha on a t-shirt. Jesus gets put on hundreds of shirts.
autumn_firefly
autumn_firefly on Apr 13 '08
ugh, please, I've seen plenty my Buddhist friends - Buddhist-born friends from Asia and converted friends from the U.S. - wear shirts with the Buddha on them. And I've seen plenty of Catholics with Jesus or Mary on their shirts, or saints on a pendant on their necks. And I've seen loads of Hindu shirts with gods on them. If it's not your taste, then it's not your taste, but it's a lot of other people's, INCLUDING Buddhists. Now, I'm not a Buddhist, but from my understanding, out of all of the issues in our world, the Buddha is probably least upset about t-shirts.

Overly PC = destructive and a waste of time.

You've got a good design, afromation. Ignore the overly sensitive art-crushers. Just make the artwork your own, as others have said, instead of relying so heavily on a photograph.

some ppl don't care abt anything..but some do. jesus gets printed for religious reasons... even by the churches. to educate more ppl abt christianity and to get them converted. but buddha and buddhism come from a very different culture. and the approach is different. there is no propaganda or convertion storngly done. that's against the way of buddhist thinking.
I'm a strong buddhist and coming from a buddhist culture i know most buddhist would not like this kinda thing and wouldn't wear it. but one thing i agree is that buddha is probably the least upset about t shirt... however, I personally don't feel like scoring this design. don't mean to be rude. sorry!

i also think its a fad among the "trendy" threadless crowd to gang up on a designer if they feel like it... visions of orcas playing football with porpoise come to mind...

why don't all you people just chill out? get some crocs. take your dog for a walk. its not a big deal. this probably won't get printed (not because its bad but because a very slim number do), and even it did its extremely unlikely you will see someone wearing this shirt in real life.

what you guys are doing is dangerous; you are censoring acceptably art. if you disagree with the shirt, then threadless gives a great outlet to voice your opinions- the voting scale! vote 0 if you don't like it! but don't get so fucking self righteous about it!

i think autumn_firefly has it right

afromation- i know how hard it is too see a design you really like just get completely shut down; its not a bad design, and you don't suck. don't get so down over this. you rock man!(or woman, i forgot to check)

Ah so following autumn_firefly's reasoning someone who says they're a car is a car. It's against the belief system which is pretty loose in buddhism, but still killing the ego is the goal of buddhism. I'm not mad about this shirt nor self righteous about religious views, I was just stating the facts and that is all. If someone was going to get self righteous about this shirt it would be the angel above the statue of Siddhartha's head that would be the target.

And to the pretentious child, this is far from censorship, I've yet to see anyone threaten afromation or call for his head or the shirt to be removed because they are offended(I'm glad to see none of this has happened). Many artists have died for their ideals or fled their homeland to escape persecution. That is censorship and the great irony here is if you feel it censorship for those who don't agree with something to voice their opinions is. What would you call telling those people, that they are overstepping their bounds? This is very much an open forum for ideas and opinions, quite the opposite of censoring.

And I feel we all owe an apollogy to aformation for allowing this discussion to grow so far away from critiqueing his design and helping him improve if we can.

seriously, if you don't like a design, just score it that way. Quit making speeches like you're gonna change the world. dumb teenagers.
