I think it would work even without the ax. Especially with the head on the back of the shirt (I love that part) Maybe have the gnome looking to the side all inocent or something.

I don't think the head would work well on the front (drawn as is at least) because the perspective will look weird, they will appear to be on two separate planes. However, I could see eliminating the bird and putting the bunny on back looking at the head...
