SHAlom. lets just say as an irreverent person, graphic designer, offender of sensibilities here and there, one time renter of a room outside nashville in a trailer with a genuine black velvet sad clown painting on the wall, as well as being the grandson of two people who lost their entire families in the gas chambers of Chelmno, even I couldn't get away with it. Chances are, neither could the designer.

Hitler's not for tshirts, buddy.

salaam alekem.

I have to say excellent craftsmanship and a well thought out design. Poor choice of subject matter!!
berrynoir
berrynoir on Mar 27 '08
Yeah, I'm sorry to be so redundant, but considering that the man killed millions of people, having his face, and then having him as a clown is gonna be pretty damn offensive to people. Try explaing to someone who lost their family in WWII what's so funny about Hitler and why he's a clown.

Nice. Glad to know there are people amused by the idea that a man responsible for killing huge numbers or Jews, gays, minorities, physically and mentally handicapped people and starting a war that destroyed entire cities can be depicted as a clown. What about this did you find funny?

what does hitler really have to be sad about anyways...he is the one who ruthlessly attacked billions of people...the only thing thats sad about hitler was that he was too demented to realize how extremely wrong...I think he is a clown but in the negative sense of the word...meaning that he is a fool....was that was you intended by this design?
madenew
madenew on Mar 27 '08
"how extremely wrong he was"...this is what I meant to say
Synthetics
Synthetics on Mar 27 '08
It's just a shirt. A satirical shirt. I'm pretty sure the designer isn't a spokesperson for how awesome Hitler was. I didn't find it offensive in the slightest and took it as making an "assclown" out of Hitler and 'getting back at him' artistically.

Having said that, I can understand why people would take it a little differently during the day.
Harfangoria
Harfangoria on Mar 27 '08
I agree that it has satirical value. It'd make a good submission to a small-publisher quarterly comics anthology, for example.

But wearing something is a whole different kettle of fish. I cannot wear it because I've studied the Holocaust too much, and I wish more people would; and if they did, they couldn't wear it either.

Even if I weren't a Jew, which I am, I doubt I could tolerate someone wearing this around me even.

hahahahahaha.....

I love all of comments...really.I made Hitler face cause he has a familiar face( in negative meaning), And Yeah, he is a clown."Clown Of War". Here, clown = Fool.

Mizzuru
Mizzuru on Mar 28 '08
I mean i think the message is confused in other peoples mind but yeah its good to mock this guy but I doubt I'd wear the T-shirt. I have Jewish and Polish friends so I would just be murdered...
berrynoir
berrynoir on Mar 28 '08
Yeah, dart-board I could see. But except for all the "scary clowns" in horror movies, the clown is a symbol of something benign, entertaining for children and someone that makes people happy and laugh. So I don't think the message comes across, and as pointed out, during the day it would be pretty awkward to walk around with a Hitler shirt. I find it a little disturbing that you giggle and love all the comments - people do that when they submit fairly minimally controversial stuff and enjoy provoking a reaction, but to enjoy provoking a reaction from people over this sort of subject matter seems pretty immature and insensitive. I apologize if I am misunderstanding, but that seems to be what you are saying.
Pop-Monkey
Pop-Monkey on Mar 28 '08
Erm. Sorry, but Hitler was no "fool", so that explanation doesn't fly. A fool could never have gained as much power, had as much influence and caused as much damage on the world stage as he did. He was a brilliant, evil, horrendous man, but he was no fool. No way this will be printed, and I'm surprised they passed it through the approval process (but we know how easy that is).
berrynoir
berrynoir on Mar 28 '08
Yeah, I go with Pop-Monkey on this. The Holocaust and ensuing World War didn't result from some trivial "foolishness". Is it good to "mock" him? It's not like he made a whoopsie. Hitler was apparently a charismatic and charming person who had the ability to obtain great power from lowly beginnings. It's one thing, the people who have made a similar design with George W Bush, even though then you could argue that his administrations has also caused great damage. I guess we could go on and on about this - but of course it won't get printed. It's just still sad that there are people unenlightened and imperceptive enough to find this funny.

i eat babies on Mar 28 '08

xCrazyAwesomex on Mar 28 '08
Oh, so Hitler? It's good to know that behind all the irrational and inconceivable hate and violence of the holocaust there was a man who had a song in his heart and a smile on his face. I mean the idea for the glow/clown thing is good, but I think that of all the horrible choices for faces you could put on a shirt, Hitler would be the worst.

berrynoir: This is not a provoking tshirt dude! OK? And that is normal that you people have your own opinions. And I like of all your opinions. And I know Adolf Hitler is a briliant, but his briliant made a man killed a man, that is what i mean about "foolish" side of Hitler. And this tshirt is reflection of my opinion about Hitler. We do not know him in person, Do you?

berrynoir
berrynoir on Mar 28 '08
Jellytank: you are mistaken - this is indeed a provoking shirt design: that may not have been your intention, but clearly it has provoked a lot of reactions and I would be surprised if you didn't know that it would do so to some extent. I don't really know how to respond to the rest of what you wrote - I don't understand what you're trying to say in the middle part and the part about do I know Hitler personally isn't really worth responding to.
berrynoir
berrynoir on Mar 28 '08
This isn't about you as a designer, I think a lot of your work is very beautiful, but as someone who has studied history, and as someone who does not have grandparents because of this man, I have to say that I find this design in poor taste.

thatchick on Mar 29 '08
this is incredibly clever and witty, and i definitely find it funny. i wouldn't wear it though, because as other people have said, it IS still a hitler shirt.

again i really have to emphasize because of other comments that it's a piece of creative genius. this would be great as an installation work of art, where a light goes on and off to show both faces.

one other thing, also because of other comments, i think it's pretty obvious that the shirt in no way implies that the holocaust was itself funny or good, or that hitler was someone to be revered, or that anything he did was in any way something to laugh about. it's just artistic irony at its best. i really doubt the artist is an anti-semite or neo-nazi.

it reminds me of that bakery that did that gingerbread man display of gingerbread nazis... anyone remember that? i thought it was hilarious because people would get to literally bite hitler's head off.

anyway, 0 pts as a shirt but nothing against the concept.

That last comment brings up an interesting point;

Why not Hitler; but if it was GWB heaps of people would love it. Has he not also been responsible for countless deaths. Just sayin'.

I think it's funny in a kind of "Hitler, the Musical" kinda way, but yeah, I wouldn't want to walk around all day with Hitler on my chest.

I think I would break the law if I would wear this one in austria. but I would not wear it anyway.

in my opinion it is OK to make jokes about hitler, because humor is an effective weapon against facist ideology. It unmasks it pretty well because facists have a total lack of humor and irony. I assume that was the idea behind this whole design.

But a t-shirt is not a good medium for such jokes at all, which can be misinterpretet by people who don't know you and your political views.

@ jellytank: comparisons between hitler and bush are dull. 40 million dead people and a genocide are just two answers to your question.

Bottom line, Hitler is really not the right guy to put on the shirt. People will look at this shirt thinking you used to be a Gestapo. You'd really have to explain the shirt for people to understand it. I think Threadless shirts should stand on their own, with no explanation. (Unless, of course, they're complete idiots, but no one is not going to recognize Hitler.)

It's clever, really, but not with Hitler.

Hilarious and thought provoking. But t hen again, my favorite Threadless t is Stabby McKnife, I believe that smacking your kids once in a while is OK and I think it would be great to put fiberglass into the creamer in the Congress breakroom. It'll never make it, but a great design nonetheless.

Yeah, um, I have some Jewish friends who might be a little curious as to why I had Hitler on a t-shirt. It's a good idea, but I have a feeling that some people are going to be quite angry if Threadless prints this.
Kookaberry
   Kookaberry on Apr 02 '08
Hey guys I don't think the designer intended to offend anyone. However, I don't think he really thought this through. This shirt only works as a parlor trick assuming you are standing right next to a light and are prepared to flick it off real quick in order to get the message across. Unfortunately, a person wearing this will simply look like they have Hitler plastered across their chest 99% of the time, and that's just not going to fly with mainstream society...pretty much anywhere. Good try but...yeah I don't see this being printed.
