This is lovely. I love the fluidity of the image - the elongated tail, the doppelganger positioning of fox and crow and the little details like the rushes in the background.
that bold black line around the fox really makes it pop in the foreground
( can you tell I've been watching some of your videos ? ) |
Stylish, Ray. Very stylish.
I wish I had read Aesop's Fables, 'cause I don't really get the falling cheese thing otherwise. Good job on this. |
Steven, I have a much better presentation storyboarded out. I just haven't had a chance to do it yet!
Fantastic illustration... I'll always remember that fable now. (Of course, I'll remember it even better when I have it on a t-shirt...)
I think the music note looks out of place, and isn't really needed. Other than that though, very good.
Alvarejo, my blog has a bunch of videos on using Manga Studio. I really like it's inking tools. Akin to using a real brush and ink!
that's a crazy long foxtail! I love it, though I would have liked to see it on a model... as 0jim0 said, it looks really nice flat here, but I wonder how it would actually look on a shirt.
the only thing I would change is the music note. Crows don't really have a beautiful song, it's more of a screechy "Caw" sound. Otherwise I love everything about this.
finesse job!
the link you posted showing it on an actual shirt looks fantastic! the flat one doesn't do it justice. very very nice. |
LOVE. $5
This was one of my favorite stories; I believe Richard Scarry also illustrated it in one or more of his books and this brings back memories!!! |
Richard Scarrey is my favorite kid's book author (okay, disclaimer: he's the only one I know).
I was obsessed with his little animals as a kid. |
I plan on making an art book if not more shirts. I love the fables too. Even the obscure ones that don't get repackaged for children.
Okay, cool. I tried to make the icons match the existing Threadless UI. I was hoping that a minimal number of buttons and a help screen would quell all naysayers.
Okay, cool. I am working on a lossless gradient mesh for the background of the presentation. It will better simulate the image (a movie clip of the design) against a shirt.
I have read the fable. I thought she sang a loud "caw". The note makes it look like she's actually making music.
I watched your video and thought it was very interesting. |
Sunshine, I chose to show the crow reveling in her own delusion. Individual perception vs. the collective unconscious. That sorta thing.
I just realized that I was still harping on my own idea after appologizing for doing so. just feel free to ignore the first sentence in my comment above.

Its been said, but I'll say it again, it always looks nicer when you display the design on an actual shirt. This looks really nice on the shirt.
OMG yes! At first it made me think of Chaucer, with Chanticleer and the fox, then I suddenly went 'cheese? Aesop!'
Finally a tee I can make all my lit buddies jealous with. |
So, Ray... how did you create this wonderful Flash file? You actually have time to ActionScript AND draw?! You're... you're... not human!
Thanks. I wasn't sure, so I started checking what other shirts have scored. I think this ain't that shabby.
Congrats on the sweet score! Missed this, but a belated 5$. Wonderful design, looks like a must-print.
