Don Jon -

Today and ever since Nixon the US health system has been a program run for profit disguised as a free choice market that has "your" best interest at heart. Big corps ei private insurance companies benefit more by turning away care then offering it which corrupts what health care is suppose to stand for. Running a health care system as universal care would eliminate the greed factor which I believe is the solution. As for war, it has effected us in many ways but the way it effects health care is the trillions of dollars spent on war when it could be put to benefiting those of us that need quality health care, which is everyone. So this design shows what I think of when faced with the issue of the original idea of health care being changed because of greed of big business and war.

pizazz - Thanks! I did do a color version but I think it took away from the designs impact, Sometimes I think one color can be more loud then a 8 color variety.

Interesting, you make good points. But why do you believe that the answer to these issues is turning over healthcare to the government? Why not just let healthcare be a free market service without the government interference that Nixon instituted?

Don Jon -

Right now, US health care is a free market service minus Medicaid (which is poor at best). Why it doesn't work is it's run as a for profit system which makes money more important then people.
Do we expect a bill when the fire department puts out a fire? nope. When the Police help in a dangerous situation do they bill us for helping? Nope. Why? because it's a government run service paid by our taxes. Why shouldn't the most important safety being our health, be put under the money hungry system of private insurance companies? I think it's wrong that docs can even turn away people for not having insurance or not having a condition covered. Why should we pay taxes with 25% going to a war most don't support when that money could be put in a pool of a universal care? Seems the government has a responsibility to serve the people and spend it's money wisely to benefit the masses not the multi million dollar minority. There is a reason why a lot of people support Bush even now, they have profited off what the administration has done. We the working class poor and middle class are a commodity to a government that profits off not caring for it's people. Which just seems like greed and capitalism at it's finest and ugliest.

I agree that the government and big businsess are colluding against the interests of the middle and working classes. And certainly the war, and all wars for that matter, is being run for profit. But I disagree with some of what you said. While it is nice to not have to pay for police and firemen directly, instead through taxes, there some issues with this system. For instance, what would happen if the police did a terrible job for you? You'd have no recourse but to deposit your complaint into a massive bureacracy. The same would be true in a universal healthcare system. And if you believe it is the job of the government to care for its citizens, why doesn't it take over food production or housing?
Arrow08
Arrow08 on Mar 11 '08
Thanks everyone!

RobinHood- AK47's were built in Russia but sold world wide. Many other countries have produced it but your right US has not produced it. But, many US military soldiers were and are trained in weapons from all around the world, not just the M16, so I thought why not use it to represent war?

cindylou- Thanks! , I could see that working too, but I like it as wings on the back or across the chest. I got alternate placement ideas in links above.

Don Jon- We can see universal health care in action today in around 41 industrial countries. And the stats show that all of them have a lower death rate then the US. Why is it that a country that makes less then the US can have better health for it's people then a wealthy country like the US? I think it's because of money and big business.
There are things that the gov should be in charge of to me, those things are all to do with safety. Firemen, police and health care. Food is perfectly reasonable to be put under a competing market because it's a good to purchase, health should not be a good to purchase.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate the questions and interest in this piece. Sorry for the long responses. This is very important to us all today because many of us are fresh outa college and just realizing how the health insurance system works as you are not being covered by your folks, makes me think about how wrong it is set up.

One thing I would like to point out is that our medical system is not at all a capitalist system. The government gives tax breaks to businesses that pay for employees healthcare, doctors and pharmucetical companies often profit off of government regulations, perscription pills for seniors are often paid by the government, etc. I'm sure you get the point.

Also, I'm curious, is your support of Universal Healthcare based on morals, or is just an opinion?
Arrow08
Arrow08 on Mar 12 '08
thanks for the comments!

areyoudaft- uneetee moved it to the archive early so I reclaimed it. Why not right?

Don Jon - Quick answer, I think the way the health care system is set up now benefits many but hurts more. It does good and lots of it, don't get me wrong but we can't over look the multi million dollar profits private insurance companies have received year after year. So my reason would be morally.

Well, this probably isn't the best place to discuss this. But I'll leave you with a thought: Is morality really determined by how much money someone makes off of a particular industry?

I look forward to your next submissions, good job on this one by the way.

Thanks for the support everyone! Real good to hear you all dig it.

Don Jon, your right, not the best place to discuss this. ..
But to answer your question: Morality to me is doing what you believe is right. Lets say you work at a insurance company. Is saving your insurance company some dough by turning down that experimental surgery that would save a persons life morally right when really you are killing this person?

Thats awesome! I think a lot of nurses would like this, my sister included because she is getting into nursing and has a sole reason of helping others not for the money but because it's a good thing to do. That's what health care originally stood for and still can.

Someone watched that Michael Moore film. :P
I like the, uh, what's it called. That thing you made, that's the international symbol for pharmacies? Cause I'm a big ted leo and the pharmacists fan and I wear their "Hearts of Oak" shirt with that on it a lot.
Arrow08
Arrow08 on Mar 17 '08
heh yea, Micheal Moore gets my respect. The last film sicko really hit a note with me because I am experiencing losing my folks insurance and have recently graduated college with freelancing means by the end of the year I will need a full time position in my field (illustration) or buy insurance month to month with student loans on top of that. I don't think it's a good system especially when the taxes I am paying are going to a war instead of more health care.

Thanks for the comment! Oh, and the design base is on the caduceus symbol which at one point and in some cases still is used as the symbol for medicine.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Mar 17 '08
The rod of Æsculapius is the symbol of medicine. It features a single snake and no wings. The caduceus is originally a symbol of commerce and of peace or truce. It's use as a symbol of noncombative status and its similarity to the Æsculapius rod have made it a symbol of the medical corps in the US Army. This is really wide open to interpretation.

Here is a new version of the design. I added thicker lines and ended up screen printing for fun to see how it turned out. With the thicker lines it looks much better. Later I will take a pic to show how it looks but for now here is a JPEG of both on the shirt and just the design.
