About my design

by alonsky
Inspired by 1920-30s Soviet Avant-guard poster style. Dedicated to the time after Perestroika, when Russians got the first taste of American modern literature without a fear of being arrested or expelled from the country.

the presentation could be better. i like the other one similiar to this a LOT better.

lol, Trainspotting isn't American literature!

But I'm just being silly. I really like the use of colour on this. The design is all cut off however which I dislike. We need to see the edges of the posters at the sides. We don't need to see the ceiling and we need to see more of the man with the Bukowski book. If his hair and clothes were the same colour as the background it would be effective.

i like it just make the black square transparent and I would wear it all the time I don't like when the design is cut off from the tee

Not sure about the Hell's Angels book title...Maybe "Fear and Loathing"? Otherwise, pretty awesome.

This is absolutely a 5. But, minor quibbles:

1) As stated above, do not set the square off from the rest of the shirt.

2) I get the KPSS (Communist Party of the Soviet Union). But what is the other Russian sign? The sixth letter looks like a "v" which is not is Cyrillic. Help me.

3) Maybe "On the Road" instead of Hell's Angels? Or an emigré writer?

thank you for great comments and feed back.

since there were many debates about the books:

"Hell's Angels" by Hunter S. Thompson (kinda hard-boiled detective story, good stuff for a country with developing mafia and fake democracy)

the second poster in russian says:

Truth to Masses (which i thought was a phrase, particularly cynical and over used in the soviet society )

and imaging this, if i created this 40 years, i would have been send to Siberia for making funny Lenin with thing legs :)

promise, if this gets to be printed, i will keep in mind your recommendations!

thanks,

i am new to this game, by the way.

I think they'd be more inclined to read something in Russian than the books on your reading list. Also, not sure on this, but I think the design style you're emulating had been abandoned before the Great Patriotic War. Socialist Realism might have been more appropriate.

Dear Hughdad, it is a sketch on cultural/political changes in abstract way. You are right: they would read in Russian, but i am creating this T for international audience, i thought English would be better.

and Style, i am sorry -- up to me on my my design :)! you are can feel free however to use social realism.

oh,

just one ore thing:

it's about invasion of Western Culture in Russia. When people were able to read what they wanted, rather then government approved reading lists.

Very stylish illo and actually very well composed, (great eye movement to the design), when I look at the smaller version. I think if you extended the man with his back to the viewer downward, it would have worked beautifully on the shirt. So, 4 for now.

(If it doesn't make it to print I would be really interested to see, "I am just a funny girl" walking through a door into this cafe). Keep them coming, Cheers!

thought I commented on this before. Trainspotting is a classic.

Ever hear of 'the specials'? Great band, this is what your design reminds me of. Well done 5

hey,

thank you for support and critic,

it seems to me that people prefer cute monsters and birds for their t-shirts rather than something more content-challenging .

oh, and no, sorry i don't know 'the specials', but i will check them out.
