I think it's great. I like the juxtaposition of the retro-inspired style with the modern concept of pixellization.

the idea was to be an like those comic vintage ads like text and images...actually there's more txt in those kind of adds i tried not to put too much

Sunshine69 on Feb 13 '08
I think you have the right amount of text. Maybe you don't need the "Oh" thought bubble, though, because it's very similar in size and shape and tone to NEW and 50 ¢

The concept has potential. But if I were you I'd study those old-fashioned ads a bit more closely. The style of the 50's kids isn't *quite* right (and they're different styles - kid with the gun is drawn in lines, the other two are just blotches of colour with much less detail).

This style of ad would probably not say "as seen on TV".

They're small things, but to me they make or break a concept that's meant to be a riff on a style.

This kind of stuff:

here's the detail i dont find the difference of lines a problem but like i said...not everybody its supposed to like it!

"This style of ad would probably not say "as seen on TV"."

liberatesputnik, this is obviously a tongue-in-cheek design, why are you being so literal in your interpretation? Just enjoy it. A real ad from that era wouldn't have been for a "Pixel Gun" either. or reference 32-bit characters.

I take back my comment about “as seen on TV,” if you stretch the style to include the 60’s when TV was more wide-spread:
http://pzrservices.typepad.com/vintageadvertising/2006/12/easy_bake_oven_.html

But the TV reference (and that the kids are drawn in different styles) were not the central point I was trying to make anyways. What kept me from rating this a 5 is that to me the kids don’t quite match the 50’s/60’s style.

That’s why I think these two T’s are so strong, they worked closely within the style:
http://www.threadless.com/product/944/X_Ray_Goggles_Work
http://www.threadless.com/product/1107/The_League_of_Cliche_Evil_Super_Villains

And to Sunshine69: All I was trying to say is, if it’s a playful riff on two styles (50’s ads and vintage computer games), then I would think one would stick to those 2 styles. I mean, you can do what you like really…how about throw in a penguin or panda bear, they seem to be popular…but you lose the effect if you dilute the effect.

Sunshine69
Sunshine69 on Feb 20 '08
I obviously disagree with you, libertesputnik. Even if I concede that this design is playing on more than one retro style, I think it still works beaufully, but I don't agree with your premise. What do you mean by "vintage computer games"? This design has nothing to do with the early "video" games of the 70s and 80s. That was the Star Wars era, and many of the ads had a similar look and usually used photography instead of illustrations. I don't think it has to be such a faithful reproduction of a certain style, anyway. The artist chose to make the children in the background without outlines to draw attention to the boy with the gun, and that's really the only divergence that I see.

On a side note, I found this ad off the link you gave: Atomic Energy Lab. This kit actually exposed children to a radioactive isotope of uranium. That makes this pixel gun seems quite safe by comparison. I thought that was funny and horrible at the same time.

I love this design. I just with there was a colored shirt option.

well my goggles shirt sunshine was creme originally but that can change from threadless, it ended up being gold wich looked nice still i wanted it to see it on creme, but thanks for the comment and im glad you liked my design, sometimes i just dont think things to much, i just do them graphically speaking but people sometimes are extremely focused on details that when your working you dont really mind and try to get away from, im not an experto on human figure i have a lot of ideas that i just can draw..actually i teamed up with someone who can and soon youll see that these kind of drawings wont look "different" so basically i just do something i wear myself so i dont mind bad comments...unless your like a super famous designer or artist not everybody is gonna liek your work...so thanks again sunshine! for your time to write

Congratulations on the great score. I laughed at myself when you pointed out you did the x-ray specs shirt ... though the purist in me just screams "but you can do that 50's style so well! Why doesn't this one quite match the style?" :( But obviously its your choice dude.

Anyways you might have a good chance, this one just got printed and it’s also a 50’s + something else style, people are loving the 50’s stuff!

http://www.threadless.com/product/1166/Pulp

Though I have to harp on once again, that I think that shirt works because the style is so classically 50’s with only the language revealing the modern side. If the comic style was a mish-mash of modern and 50’s, it wouldn’t be as strong. But as you say, that’s my opinion.
