About my design

by mmaggi
This is intended to be belt printed.

I think it would look good on long sleeves, maybe even a hoody.

Be careful:

I realize this probably wasn't intentional, but it's awfully similar.

raise, this has absolutely nothing to do with this. y would u even post that?

like either color, but don't like the orange color for the window as shown on the blue. I think the light yellow would be fine for either color. LOVE the idea! This is very me. :) $4!

vinnylo, I didn't mean to offend, honestly I didn't.

In fact made sure to note that I didn't believe that the striking similarity was "intentional," but to say it has nothing to do with this design is either cutely naive or blatantly ignorant.

If you design anything that will be viewed by the public, especially within the framework of a contest, you need to be aware of any similarities your design may carry to previously produced or copyrighted material.

You obviously have no problem with the unmistakable likeness this design has with the poster I linked, but why don't you let mmaggi respond for himself? I didn't know that making people aware of what came before was so insulting. I'd prefer that people informed me of any likeness my work shared with another artist's so I could avoid the embarrassment of accidental plagiarism.

Well, the poster was news to me, but yeah, I admit they share a similar idea. I'd like to think that the differences in illustration and media are enough to avoid serious accusations of plagiarism. I also appreciate that it's important to acknowledge precedents in design.

Seeing the poster makes we wish I'd thought to put a little silhouette in mine too ... genius.

Indeed. And that's all I was getting at. A lot of people have similar ideas without ever knowing of each other. A good design is a good design, no matter who comes up with it first. I am glad you took my comment in the spirit in which it was given. Keep it up man.

Not to mention there's this whole idea of appropriation in art that started in Postmodernism where artists would completely jack other people's ads or photographs by re-photographing them and displaying them in a gallery setting in order to bring to light different issues (social, etc.) that the original ad/photo had nothing to do with.

I think on a site like this, yes there are instances where the individual blatantly didn't even try to illustrate a concept they just ripped someone's design off, but in other instances people are dealing with pop culture and I think copyright becomes a little more flexible there when it comes to content. With as much media as there is out there I think it's probably impossible for someone to really know everything that may or may not correlate with their idea.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I'm glad this is getting some response, I was afraid that it was too conservative a design for threadless.

Well, it's 03:46 AM over here, and I'm not only the only person still awake in this house, but probably in the entire street ... guess how much I like this design? :)

And I agree, one of the rare times where a belt print is really really good. I don't own a single belt print shirt cause I usually find them boring and not making sense, but this one is awesome!

Best belt shirt I've ever seen. It makes an intriguing pattern on the shirt so it's interesting in that respect and then you get the surprise. Very nice thinking and execution. $5

I'm starting to think that I should have put the blue shirt on navy instead of denim.

For anyone who is interested, I uploaded to the navy color option as version 5 in the critique for this design. http://www.threadless.com/critique/14252/still_awake#v5

I think it would look better with an insomniac looking out the window.

Just my opinion.

mmaggi on Feb 11 '08
Again, thanks everyone for the comments. At first, I was liking the idea of a silhouette of some type in the window. Now I'm thinking that it would detract from the simplicity of the design, which I think is a strength. It just seems like it would water things down.

Threadless rarely seems to favor simplicity though.

this is sweet. I think it would be awesome with a few more lights on and some little silhouette people doing stuff

I'd buy it as a hoodie. Not that exited about the T-shirt version though.

mmaggi on Feb 14 '08
Is it possible to belt print over the hood on a hoodie? It seems like it would be cool, but I don't even know if it's printable.

I really like this! On a hoodie would be awesome, if it is indeed possible. I like both the black and the navy backgrounds, but the light yellow color is definitely better than the orange.
