jesus is real to many people and false to others.
just as the world is flat for some and round for others.

its all about what you believe to be true, and people are allowed to carry their own opinions.
And in MY opinion i dont belive this should become some epic religious discussion, comment on the artists work please, and post your religious views elsewhere.
thanks

and this drawing is very well done, have you by chance considered illustrating childrens books?

Not everyone agrees that a historical jesus ever existed.
Scootman
Scootman on Feb 08 '08
he's not a historical figure, he's like paul bunyan or johnny appleseed. just a fable that's been (somehow) blown wayyyyy out of proportion for about 2008 years. i'd rather worship a giant lumberjack guy that has a giant ox and cuts down trees anyways.

in any event, i wouldn't wear it unless it has some witty saying like "evolution rocks" or something like that, but an incredibly awesome and super stylized take on j.c.

i'm going for a 4

Scootman
Scootman on Feb 08 '08
people that don't believe in the holocaust deserve to be slapped.... about a million times.
Sunshine69
Sunshine69 on Feb 08 '08
nobody's hating. If someone states something as a fact with no evidence to back it up, I reserve the right to dissagree. There's evidence that the holocaust happened. There's no evidence of a historical Jesus. If you choose to believe something on "faith", fine, but don't expect everyone to agree with you.

Pop-Monkey on Feb 08 '08
Great image. I find it sad that people find the need to awkwardly and obviously inject antagonistic phrases like "mythical cult figure" in their critique of the design simply to try and stir shit up. Grow up and just say whether you like it or not, if you feel the need to say anything. They guy's not trying to force anything on you, so why feel the need to dig at him like that? Obviously this type of stuff gets under people's skin and they feel the need to lash out.

Love the illustration, getting seriously annoyed with all the random comments on content. If it were Buddah or anybody else, I doubt people would be so quick to judge. Keep your personal crap at home, judge the drawing, or bust. Great work.
theangeli
theangeli on Feb 08 '08
I'm sorry b.ran. For the record, I reserve the right to vote based on the quality of the artwork, the way it looks on a shirt, and the content. They are all subjective. I understand that. While this shouldn't necessarily boil down to a religious debate on his existence, it's fair to comment on (or zero) content.
Sunshine69
Sunshine69 on Feb 08 '08
You know what? A lot of people don't like religious designs. A lot of people don't like happy rainbows or faux Nigel girls. We have a right to say whether we like the subject matter or not. And I think everyone here agrees that the artwork is top notch and the designer obviously has talent. If you choose to put up a design with a controversial subject, be prepared to deal with people's reactions.
Shorthanded
Shorthanded on Feb 08 '08
So... I am confused about something. Let me see if I get this straight. The design above should be judged on its artistic merit, and not its semantic content (which may or may not be contentious.) While this is "tasteless," "digusting," a "P.O.S.," etc. I think someone would have to be seriously kidding themselves to say that "No Devotion" was judged solely on its artistic merits (whatever those might be,) and not its contentious semantic content.
I am not suggesting "No Devotion" is a superior shirt design, but I don't remember anyone running to its defense saying "Guys, don't hate on the message, everyone has the right to their beliefs, just judge the artwork." etc.
Regardless of anyone's individual response to "No Devotion" (" Dude, I totally DID judge it solely on its artistic merit!") you cannot deny that the aggregate response has a decidedly different flavor.

I can't wait to wear this to remind all non-christians what awaits them after they die -- eternal damnation and suffering! And I can be all in-your-face about it with this GIANT jesus face! Awesome! My religion condemns all non-believers to hell! Yay!

^ The only irony, ryan, is that followers of other religions think ~they're~ promised salvation and that ~we're~ the infidels who will burn in hell! How sad and pathetic they are in their ignorance. They'll learn the error of their ways when a demon is poking them in the ass with a pitchfork for millions of years, as our bible says they will.

It kills me every time someone has a jesus sub up here, the same arguements are hashed and re-hashed! lol. Yes, some people believe in this magic man and some don't, but the fact is this isn't the place to sell un-ironic religious images. They have to promote religious tolerance or togetherness (BFF) or a goofy jesus using the force (obi wan kerrist) or being mocked by British policemen!

Fantastic drawing tho. Let's see your non-Christ works of art.

But, like other people have said, I couldn't wear it because of the content. You got any other artwork up around somewhere? I like your style. :]
Sunshine69
Sunshine69 on Feb 13 '08
Blacktiger, you're not going to win friends and influence people by pushing your narrow religious views. Great art doesn't tell people what to think, but encourages them figure it out for themselves. You have some real talent, but you're shooting yourself in the foot here. Stop proselytizing.

And actually, the more I think about this design, the more I like it for it's (perhaps unintentioal) irony. Science continues to answer more and more of our questions, and religion is getting squeezed into irrelevence. I'm sure someday, the story of Jesus will be considered as just another fairy tale or ancient myth. That's why I see this cartoon representation so appropriate. Feel free to dissagree. People's interpretations of your art aren't always what you intended. And that's the beauty of it. We are FREE to make up our own minds about what it means. So i'm changing my score from a 4 to a 5, and maybe a buy.
Daith Lee
Daith Lee on Feb 13 '08
Thanks Twilson82...I wonder would we have this much debate if this was a Buddha or Muhammed drawing. I don't think so because only the truth hurts. No one here is forcing the beliefs of one person on another. We believe in Christ. Some don't. If anything, the ones who don't believe are the ones in these comments forcing their beliefs on others. Its crazy how this is all going over a shirt a design of the Messiah...heck if I wanted to argue something, I could say that, "WHY DOES HE HAVE TO BE BLACK?!" Know why I don't? cause its just plain stupid. You like the shirt or you don't. Yea or Nay. You like the line control or you don't. Yea or Nay... That's all THIS is about...
Sunshine69
Sunshine69 on Feb 13 '08
you can bet that if this was a depiction of Muhammed, that any Muslims here would be completely outraged, and there would be a fatwa issued against the artist and maybe Threadless, too. Daith Lee, you need to go back and read Shorthanded's response. You're the one claiming to have the final word on what is "truth". And what do you even mean by "why does he have to be black?!"

p.s. Black- evolution is not exactly us coming from an animal, but about how our bodies and organs are evolving today. It IS possible to be a christian and still believe in evolution.
farflung
   farflung on Feb 13 '08
Here's a few questions to help people decide if they believe in Evolution:

1. Do you believe in the molecule DNA?

2. Do you believe that you inherited characteristics from your parents via DNA?

3. Do you believe that tiny errors are sometimes made when DNA is copied?

4. Do you believe that very occasionally, these errors can have a positive effect?

If you answered yes to all these questions, you believe in Evolution. Welcome!

You could've gotten me with my typo there...what I meant was, "why does he have to be white" I was thinking about being black and I typed in "black", lol...my bad.
What I mean by him not being black is simply this..considering the geographical area, He would be of darker skin and remsemble more of an african american ( as far as skin color and hair) BUT what i was getting at, is it would be stupid of me to argue that because its IRRELAVANT what the Son looks like, Much like its stupid and irrelavant to argue about religion and beliefs over a shirt. You have your belief and We have ours. I'd still shoot hoops with ya if I met ya. But I'd dunk on ya at least once, lol.

As you might have guessed, I am not a religious person. I believe the only meaning to our lives is what each of us chooses for ourselves. If you feel that your religion gives meaning or purpose to your life, or you are comforted by your belief, more power to you. But know that not everyone believes as you do. If there is any universal spiritual truth, I believe it can be summed up by the Golden Rule, and almost every culture has their own version of it.

The stories in the sacred texts of the world's religions don't have to be literally true. I think there may be deeper universal truths about humanity that are revealed through these stories. Truths about parenthood, familial relationships, nurturing, sacrifice, perseverence, courage, standing up to adversity, and what we believe our "ideal" state should be. The same sorts of truths that are revealed in fables and fairytales or the myths of long dead religions.

The thing about not believing in the literal truth of these stories, is that it frees you to make up your own mind. I think that's a good thing, but you might disagree with me.

Most of my family and friends are religious, and I love them all just fine. I'm not the best basketball player, but I am a good sport.
