I think deaf people already know they're deaf and don't need your shirt to tell them so. Blind people wouldn't be able to read it anyway. So pointless and sort of insulting

I told my mother (who happens to be blind) about this shirt and she found it amusing. Also, the second word in Braille is spelled wrong. I find it interesting that blind people see this as a good shirt and normal people see it as insulting.

John, it was mine - I just added the Braille (now that puff ink is available) and upped the impact on the hand signals.

"I think deaf people already know they're deaf and don't need your shirt to tell them so. Blind people wouldn't be able to read it anyway. So pointless and sort of insulting"

I think you are missing the point. It's not a public information announcement to help deaf people realise they can't hear! It is just a comment that the majority of people who look at it won't know what it means but if you are deaf you probably can understand it. Therefore if you can read it you are probably deaf. It is in no way insulting deaf people, or blind people.

As far as the braille goes, I would suspect that even fewer sighted people could read it than the sign language so it is even more relevant. You have to feel it to read it, hence the puff ink. At the end in smaller braille it says 'and copping a feel'. so if a blind person was to read it with their fingers then they could have a little chuckle at that at the end.

Squirt13 - Just to be pointless and insulting, perhaps you could get your grammar right if you're going to comment on something that you obviously don't understand. What you should have written was "You're right, pointless and insulting" instead you suggested that it is my right to be pointless and insulting.

hmmmm...i like it a lot. i think we make enough jokes for people that CAN see and hear, why not have one for those that can't? it's funny, but it's obvious that it won't get printed because there are too many uptight voters. sorry JB.

i've already seen this done. it would be nice if the hands had an artistic style to them like hand drawn looking. right now it looks like a pre made font.

my friend has a deaf brother and i would never buty this because i don't think her family would find it very amusing.

sambamheart

Is that what it says? The "If you can't read this you are probably deaf or blind"? Because that would be horrible. If I were deaf or blind and saw someone wearing this shirt I would punch them in the throat.
The Jolly Brewer
The Jolly Brewer on Jan 27 '08
OK - To the people who are saying they have seen this before - It was me. This is a re-sub! I've amended it and added the braille.

To all the sensitive souls who seem to be offended, funny that both a deaf person and a blind person both think this is funny, and are not offended.

ImNoLo - I know, how many times do I have to repeat myself?

Hmm. I like the braille one, but I think that the asl is a little...odd. do one just with the braille message, because it's not just 'oh you're blind' but the second half of the message makes me happy.
marieofcourse
marieofcourse on Jan 28 '08
i mean, just the braille across the chest.
ForeverDcember
ForeverDcember on Jan 28 '08
I think the copping a feel is hilarious.
To make another point, I see shirts often that offend me to a point, but I am not everyone and to think that someone shouldn't wear a shirt because I think it is offensive is actually what is pointless.
I think your idea is creative and I got a kick out of reading how many people are asking "ZOMG WHUT DOZ IT SAYZ?" when that has been answered numerous times.... people.
J-Ray
J-Ray on Jan 28 '08
I think the typography leaves a lot to be desired. You should probably stick with either a deaf or blind concept, anyway. Putting them both on the shirt seems a bit forced.

The braille is definitely wrong. The 'Y' in 'You' does not correspond to the 'Y' in 'probably'. In fact none of the letters in that second word correspond to the same letter in other words on the shirt.
The Jolly Brewer
The Jolly Brewer on Jan 29 '08
Yeah, it is wrong. Dunno what I've done there! Easily fixed...
Sevrinne
Sevrinne on Jan 29 '08
I was thinking about this as if I was blind or deaf.. and I think it would be really neat... It kinda says to the person reading it, "Yea, I understand :)" but even better for the blind with the extra comment. I think for some people being able to read this would make them feel a little spark of attention.. It's like seeing someone else with the same shirt on as you. Says you have something in common. In this case it's either knowing sign language or being able to read braille.

Believe it or not... not many people want to deal with disabled because it's "too hard" or will "take too long"... I was a salesperson at one point and some of my best and favorite customers were two different deaf couples. They really take it to heart when someone takes the time to understand them.

This shirt is like a secret between those that can read it.

This would make me feel nice if I were deaf or blind. 5

If I am typing this, then I must be here!

This is cooky and politcally awkward, but not incorrect. I think it is probably one of the best tees that I have viewed in a while as it looks good, has a point, I'd buy and wear it, if my maw didn't fill my wardrobe and knowing the meaning, would have a little to say about it. I and my maw like it. Have a guess what I'M getting next birthday!

It's true most people can't read ASL or braille so if they saw it or felt it they would not be offended. Most people who can read ASL or braille seem to have a good sense of humor and I think they would enjoy it. The message is true "if you can read this you are probably deaf or blind".

When people who can't read this shirt are told what it means I think they are insulted because they are uncomfortable with what they do not understand. I think the ignorant people who have total use of their senses deserve to be insulted so they can wake up and start treating the deaf and the blind as human beings.

This shirt has a powerful message and I like it. Thank you jolly brewer.

liberatesputnik
liberatesputnik on Jan 30 '08
I like the concept, but think it would be stronger if the gag line was funnier for both messages (not just Braille). Instead of the “you’re probably blind/deaf”, just go straight to something like:

[ASL] “If you can read this, please stop staring at my chest”
[Braille] “If you can read this, please stop groping me.”

I think the “in joke” aspect is the funny part, more than the “you must be” part.

p.s. this would probably also shut up all the "OMG it's insulting" people

Hey, Grammar Nazi, perhaps you could get your own grammar right before you try and correct someone else's.
You spelled "realize" incorrectly, unless you meant the selling of an investment.
Also, you did not capitalize at the beginning of a sentence.
"So if a blind person was to read it..." You mean, "were"? "If a blind person were to read it..."?
I also enjoyed counting the times you failed to insert a comma before quoting something.
My point being: It is completely idiotic and unnecessary to correct someone's grammar where it does not matter.

Now, the design is amusing. I'd like to see blue on charcoal. I also like liberatesputnik's idea.

:D Feel free to flame me now.

Agreed. It is not insulting in the least. The puff ink is nice - maybe even consider that "Stack (or whatever it's called)" ink since it produces sharper details. I'm voting 4, mostly because of the colors. I have no idea what the design says.

"It is completely idiotic and unnecessary to correct someone's grammar where it does not matter."
Grammar *always* matters. However, it is idiotic to correct it when the corrector is not following the rules either.

"realize" is the American spelling. I am English so I spell it the correct way, which is "realise". But I stand corrected on the rest of what you said.

My grammar is not great. I'm the first to admit it. But You're and Your are two different words with completely different meanings. Although You're is actually two words.

Ok it was petty of me to insult a little nipper like that, but it annoyed me. And maybe they have learned something, just like I have from LeahSue's little grammar lesson.
